Demonstration Project In Low-Cost Shoreline Erosion Control : Final Report To County Administrator, County Of Accomack, Virginia, Gary L. Anderson, Robert L. Byrne, David W. Byrd, Gary M. Chianakas

Reports

·1ow cost erosion control structures were installed at ten shoreline sites located in the lower Chesapeake Bay and on the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers to further test the applicability of the perched beach concept under diverse littoral environments. The perched beach is achieved via installation of a low sill parallel to the shoreline. The objective of the sill is to provide a partial barrier behind which an elevated (perched) beach is accreted. When successful, ~he perched beach backshore and foreshore acts to reduce the frequency of direct wave attack against the fastland and thereby reducing the erosion rate. In this …

Fine Scale Circulation Near "Foxtrot" In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Christopher S. Welch, Bruce J. Neilson Jan 1976

Fine Scale Circulation Near "Foxtrot" In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Christopher S. Welch, Bruce J. Neilson

Reports

During 1974 the Virginia Institute of Marine Science conducted a series of oceanographic, water quality and modeling studies for the outfall from the proposed Nansemond Wastewater Treatment Plant (VIMS, 1975). One of these studies included dye releases to determine the dispersion and transport of material discharged to Hampton Roads near Pig Point. These dye releases were made from the munitions loading piers known as "Foxtrot".

The proposed outfall, as given in the Facilities Plan is located roughly one kilometer to the east-south-east of Foxtrot. Tidal circulation in Hampton Roads is quite complex and there was concern that the distribution patterns …

Shore Erosion At Tangier Island, Robert J. Byrne Jan 1976

Shore Erosion At Tangier Island, Robert J. Byrne

Reports

Tangier Island, in Accomack County, Virginia, is the southernmost of a series of islands separating Chesapeake Bay from Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds (Figure 1) . With the exception of three sand ridges, which are the populated areas, the island is low lying marsh and tidal flat deposits with elevations generally below 6 feet (MLW datum).

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iv. Virginia Waters, Sandra A. Gleason, Jane F. Stauble

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems came the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Thermal Plume Entrainment Of Ichthyoplankton At The Vepco Surry Nuclear Power Station : Progress Report, October 1975, John V. Merriner, A. Deane Estes

Reports

Plume entrainment studies at Vepco Nuclear Power Plant located near Surry, Virginia were initiated in August, 1975 by the Ichthyology department of Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The program was undertaken to define the amount and kinds of fish eggs and larvae that are. present in the Cobham Bay area of the James River and become entrained by the heated effluent.

The Environmental, Resource-Use And Management Needs Of The Coast Zone, A Compendium, William J. Hargis Jr., Beverly L. Laird

Reports

As part of art extensive effort to develop a better understanding and evaluation of the problems imposed upon the Chesapeake Bay System by the activities of man and the management and informational needs related to their solution, we decided to examine a number of documents of ranging authorship and origin. The reports, papers, and manuscripts, comprising the resource materials utilized, range from the massive study entitled National Estuary Study -- recently completed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service of the U. S. Department of the Interior, to internal study manuscripts of the Institute, itself. Included were studies. aimed …
