The Design And Implementation Of A Tutorial Program To Perform Symbolic Mathematics, Richard Derek Otieno Jan 1983

The Design And Implementation Of A Tutorial Program To Perform Symbolic Mathematics, Richard Derek Otieno

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a program that could be used for a drill in symbolic mathematics. The scope of the program with respect to the range of problems that it solves is limited to selected types from elementary algebra, trigonometry, differential calculus, and integral calculus. The program is designed, not only to give solutions (answers), but also to provide several of the intermediate steps leading to the final result.

FORMAC73 and PL/1 are used to implement the program. FORMAC73 is a system and a language for manipulating mathematical expressions, symbolically. The facilities of PL/1 …

Audio Magazine: Proposed Series Chapter 04 - Predictions Of A Paradigm, Richard C. Heyser Jan 1983

Audio Magazine: Proposed Series Chapter 04 - Predictions Of A Paradigm, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Richard C. Heyser prepared this chapter as part of a series originally intended for AUDIO magazine in an effort to find an objective way of dealing with the subjective perception of sound. Through the implementation of the time delay spectrometry (TDS) method, Heyser was able to explore the mathematical analysis of audio and the philosophical principles of audio measurement. In Chapter 4, Heyser proposes a new paradigm of alternatives to expand the analysis capabilities of audio measurement.

Topological Extensions And Subspaces Of Ηα-Sets, Paul Bankston Jan 1983

Topological Extensions And Subspaces Of Ηα-Sets, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The ηx-sets of Hausdorff have large compactifications (of cardinality ≽ exp(α); and of cardinality ≽ exp(exp(2<α)) in the Stone-Čech case). If Qα denotes the unique (when it exists) ηα -set of cardinality α, then Qα can be decomposed (= partitioned) into homeomorphs of any prescribed nonempty subspace; moreover the subspaces of Qα can be characterized as those which arc regular T1, of cardinality and weight ≼ α, whose topologies are closed under < α intersections.

We show that, for multi-tape Turing machines, non-deterministic linear time is more deterministic Turing machines (that receive their input on their work tape) require time Q(n2) to powerful than deterministic linear time. We also recognize non-palindromes of length n (it is easy to discuss the prospects for extending this result to see that time O(n log n) is. sufficient for a more general Turing machines. non-deterministic machine). 1. On The First Passage Time Distribution For A Class Of Markov Chains, Mark Brown, Narasinga Rao Chaganty Jan 1983

On The First Passage Time Distribution For A Class Of Markov Chains, Mark Brown, Narasinga Rao Chaganty

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Consider a stochastically monotone chain with monotone paths on a partially ordered countable set S. Let C be an increasing subset of S with finite complement. Then the first passage-time from i S to C is shown to be IFRA (increasing failure rate on the,av;rage). Several applications are presented including coherent systems, shock models, and convolutions of IFRA distributions.

New Relativistic Paradoxes And Open Questions, Florentin Smarandache Jan 1983

New Relativistic Paradoxes And Open Questions, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Following the Special Theory of Relativity, Florentin Smarandache generalized the Lorentz Contraction Factor to an Oblique-Contraction Factor, which gives the contraction factor of the lengths moving at an oblique angle with respect to the motion direction. He also proved that relativistic moving bodies are distorted, and he computed the Angle-Distortion Equations.

He then showed several paradoxes, inconsistencies, contradictions, and anomalies in the Theory of Relativity.

According to the author, not all physical laws are the same in all inertial reference frames, and he gives several counter-examples. He also supports superluminal speeds, and he considers that the …

Quantitative Estimates For Lp Approximation With Positive Linear Operators, J. J. Swetits, B. Wood

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Quantitative estimates for approximation with positive linear operators are derived. The results are in the same vein as recent results of Berens and DeVore. Two examples are provided.

Weak Confluence And W-Sets, Van C. Nall Jan 1983

Weak Confluence And W-Sets, Van C. Nall

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mapping between continua is weakly confluent if for each subcontinuum K of the range some component of the preimage of K maps onto K. Class [W] is the class of all continua which are the images of weakly confluent maps only. The notion of Class [W] was introduced by Andrej Lelek in 1972. Since then it has been widely explored and some characterizations of these continua have been given. J. Grispolakis and E. D. Tymchatyn have given a characterization in terms of hyperspaces [4]. J. Davis has shown that acyclic atriodic continua are in Class [W]i therefore, atriodic tree-like …

A Comparison Of Processor Technologies, Eddie R. Wachter Jan 1983

A Comparison Of Processor Technologies, Eddie R. Wachter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of the technology implementation and design of four very high performance mainframe computer systems. The systems evaluated are:

Amdahl 580 Series

CDC 170 Series 800

IBM 308x Series

Univac 1100/90 Series

Included in this evaluation is a survey of the technology used, its characteristics, packaging and performance. Each system component is evaluated on the basis of design philosophy, technology, and the total system design with regards to reliability, availability, and performance.
