Desert dune-fields are quintessential features of arid landscapes. During arid phases in the recent geological past, such as the global last glacial maximum (LGM) at around 20,000 years ago, many parts of Australia experienced significant sand movement, with sand migrating down-wind and forming linear dunes. Sand entrainment and deposition is controlled by vegetative surface stabilisation, wind speed and direction, which in turn are controlled by regional climate and local factors including ground-water levels. Climate also affects sand supply, through its effects on erosion in the source areas and transport to the dune-building areas.

[Extract] During Easter in 2000 we (AP and NG) were in Central Australia during heavy rainfalls and flooding. Roads were cut and we were stuck in Tennant Creek. We decided to review documents held by the local museum. This included material used in the late 1970s to compile a general history of Tennant Creek, the only such work of which we are aware. It was interesting to note that in one case the author had written to a pastoralist they had recently visited, and included a section describing the role of Aboriginal people at their station. In brackets after this …

Beyond Yellowstone? Conservation And Indigenous Rights In Australia And Sweden, Michael Adams

Faced with the paradox of a large global increase in conservation reserves and a simultaneous global decrease in actual effective protection for biodiversity, conservation scientists and others are questioning established conservation theory and practice. Conservation is largely a ‘residual’ landuse, which often conflicts with another residual landuse, the remaining lands owned or accessed by Indigenous peoples. I argue that the Western conservation model has created this situation, and that engaging with Indigenous ways of relating to ‘nature’ could lead to improved outcomes. From the basis that environmental problems are fundamentally social problems, and using case studies from Australia and Sweden, …

Mobile Polar Highs Over Australia : Origins And Effect On Rainfall, C. Hargraves, Edward A. Bryant

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Mobile Polar Highs (MPHs) are masses of cold air that move out aperiodically from the Antarctic Icecap and eventually cross Australia. Their movement from the Weddell Sea and the Lambert Glacier was monitored between 26 March and 20 July 2004 using daily satellite images and synoptic charts. Their leading edge appears on these images as a distinct arced cloudband. The patterns of MPHs were then linked to significant rainfall events—>50 mm in 24 hrs—in southeastern Australia. Although most of this area of Australia was in drought over the study period, three major rainfall events resulted from the passage of …

Australia has the same frequency of natural hazards as any other continent; however, the types and impact of hazards are very different. Globally, the deadliest hazards are floods, earthquakes, tropical storms and tsunami. In Australia, the deadliest hazards are heat waves, floods, tropical cyclones and bushfires. Similarly, while the most expensive hazards ranked globally are also floods, earthquakes and tropical cyclones, in Australia, the costliest hazards are tropical storms, floods, wind and bushfires. Our isolated population distribution, together with rugged topography along the eastern and southern coastal fringe where the bulk of the population is concentrated, has lead to a …

Factors Affecting Metal Releases From Contaminated Marine Sediments, Dianne F. Jolley, Clare A. Atkinson, Stuart L. Simpson Jan 2005

Factors Affecting Metal Releases From Contaminated Marine Sediments, Dianne F. Jolley, Clare A. Atkinson, Stuart L. Simpson

In aquatic environments, the depth of oxygen penetration into sediment depends on sediment texture, porosity, permeability and the extent of biological (e.g., bioturbation) and physical (e.g., wave action) processes. Below the oxygen penetration depth (generally 10 mm) anoxic conditions prevail and bacteria use other oxidants such as iron and manganese oxides and sulfate to breakdown organic matter. The bacteria-catalysed reduction of sulfate releases hydrogen sulfide according to Equation 1. The release of H2S into the pore waters SO42- + bacteria → H2S (Equation 1).

Contaminant concentrations in aquatic systems are seldom constant. Erratic inputs such as industrial discharges, rain water flushing, and random spills may cause concentrations to increase rapidly. Environmental processes may contribute through the dispersive actions of tides and currents, adsorptive losses to or release from resuspended sediments, and contaminant losses due to photo-degradation and volatilization. Despite such variability in contaminant concentrations, environmental guidelines are derived from toxicity test data using continuous exposure, where contaminant concentrations at the beginning of the exposure are assumed to remain relatively constant over the test duration. Responses of organisms exposed to fluctuating contaminant concentrations may differ …

Aboriginal Pastoralism, Social Embeddedness And Cultural Continuity In Central Australia, Nicholas J. Gill Jan 2005

Aboriginal Pastoralism, Social Embeddedness And Cultural Continuity In Central Australia, Nicholas J. Gill

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Aboriginal people are involved in pastoral enterprises throughout the inland and north of Australia. This has generated difficulties as landowners and policymakers struggled with conflicts between Aboriginal social structures and the demands of running commercial businesses. Problems often arose due to imposition of nonindigenous norms regarding land use. It has been suggested that pastoralism can generate social and cultural benefits for Aboriginal landowners, but these have not been investigated in any detail. Drawing on the concept of social embeddedness and fieldwork with Aboriginal pastoralists, this article identifies, describes, and ranks sociocultural benefits arising from Aboriginal pastoralism. Pastoralism fulfilled uniquely Aboriginal …

Few practices were as intimately implicated in effecting the extension of British selves and surfaces to the colonies of Australia, as agricultural and pastoral pursuits. Said Governor Arthur Phillip, soon after the founding of New South Wales: 'There are few things more pleasing than the contemplation of order and useful arrangement on the land arising gradually out of tumult and confusion; and perhaps this satisfaction cannot anywhere be more fully enjoyed than where a settlement of civilised people is fixing itself upon a newly discovered and savage coast' (Phillips, 1789, p.122). Over the course of the subsequent century, the enactment …

The global dissemination of the multiply-antibiotic-resistant Salmonella entericaserovar Typhimurium DT104 clone with the resistance genes located in a class 1 integron, here designated In104, within genomic island SGI1 is a significant public health issue. Here, we have shown that SGI1 and variants of it carrying different combinations of resistance genes are found in several Salmonella enterica serovars. These are serovars Cerro, Derby, Dusseldorf, Infantis, Kiambu, and Paratyphi B dT+ isolated from human infections and serovar Emek from sewage effluent. Two new variants, SGI1-I and SGI1-J, both of which include thedfrA1-orfC cassette array, were identified.

Exploration of two major commercialized flat-sheet and hollow-fiber membranes in a submerged membrane fungi reactor fed with a synthetic textile wastewater revealed striking differences in the extent and mechanism of fouling between the two types, indicating a case-specific scope of choice between the two for industrial wastewater treatment. The hollow-fiber membrane exhibited fouling with a cake layer composed of fungi and starch, intensity being proportional to the operating flux (0.05–0.3 m/d). Conversely, the flat-sheet membrane suffered from immediate internal pore blocking beyond a critical flux of 0.2 m/d. During the experiment with major constituents of the synthetic wastewater separately, while …

Carbon monoxide (CO) volume mixing ratio (VMR) profiles have been retrieved from ship-borne solar absorption spectra recorded in the Atlantic between 80°N and 70°S. CO profiles can be retrieved up to 30 km with a maximum altitude resolution of 4 km for a few layers. CO enhancements due to biomass burning have been detected. Recurring enhancements of CO were detected in the upper troposphere (10–15 km) in the equatorial regions and in the southern Atlantic (20°S–30°S). These enhancements could be traced back to African biomass burning sources as well as sources as far as South America. Similar results are observed …

Column-averaged volume mixing ratios of CO2 have been obtained by ground based high-resolution solar absorption spectrometry at Ny-Alesund (Spitsbergen, 79°N) in 20022003 and during two ship cruises (54°N34°S) on the Atlantic in 2003. Precisions are better than 0.4% at Ny-Alesund and better than 0.6% for the cruises. The observed 11 ppmv (part per million by volume) seasonal amplitude of the CO2 column at Ny-Alesund is about 5 ppmv smaller than surface in situ data and 24 ppmv greater than model-predictions. The latitudinal gradient of column CO2 inferred from shipborne measurements is less than 2 ppmv in Oct/Nov 2003. During the …

Fractionation Of Sedimentary Arsenic From Port Kembla Harbour, Nsw, Australia, Glennys A. O'Brien, William E. Price, Bryan E. Chenhall, Muhammad Damris

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The binding of arsenic in sediments of the heavily industrialised Port Kembla Harbour, NSW, Australia, has been investigated. Both dredge and core samples have been used to develop a sieving/sequential extraction (SE) procedure. Dredge samples included oxic surficial and deeper anoxic sediment. The main core sample analysed was 18 cm deep, sliced at 2 cm intervals. Sediment was sieved to three size ranges (250 microm) and each of these was then subjected to a four step SE, sequentially solubilizing arsenic as ion exchangeable, 1 M HCl soluble, NH(2)OH.HCl soluble, and strong oxidising acid soluble. Concentrations of 50-500 mg As kg(-1) …

Aqueous solutions containing pyrrole and calix-6-arenehexasulfonic acid were found to undergo polymerization in the absence of either a chemical oxidant or electrochemical oxidation. The product was an unstable colloidal suspension consisting of spherical polypyrrole particles measuring ≥500 nm in diameter. Conductivity measurements showed the material to be insulating, while cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrated that it was electroactive. Infrared spectroscopy and microanalysis confirmed that the polypyrrole produced was doped with calix-6-arenehexasulfonic acid. When the reaction was repeated using solutions containing stabilizing agents, stable colloidal dispersions were obtained. These were shown by both particle size analysis and transmission electron microscopy to contain …

Development Of Watershed Management In New South Wales, Australia: A Coastal Perspective, Pedro I. J Fidelman, Robert John Morrison, Ron J. West

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Watershed management has become a prominent approach to natural resource management (NRM) in Australia and elsewhere. In the Australian State ofNew South Wales (NSW), catchment management - the NSW watershed management initiative - has been in place both in coastal and non-coastal areas for nearly two decades. In coastal areas, it is suggested that catchment management could play an important role in coastal and marine issues (NSW Coastcare et aI., 2004; Zann, 1996), as the Australia's coastal and marine environments have, in general, been affected by watershed-based activities (see e.g., Zann, 1996). Such a role would, however, require institutional changes, …

New Pieces To The Archaean Terrane Jigsaw Puzzle In The Nuuk Region, Southern West Greeland: Steps In Transforming A Simple Insight Into A Complex Regional Tectonothermal Model, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

In the south of the Nuuk region of West Greenland our 1980s mapping recognized four Archaean gneiss terranes (Færingehavn, Tre Brødre, Tasiusarsuaq and Akia terranes) with different protolith ages and separate early tectonothermal histories. Later in the Archaean these were juxtaposed and then experienced the same 2700-2500 Ma tectonothermal events. Here we abandon extrapolation of only these four terranes across the whole region, and distinguish two new terranes in the NE. The northernmost Isukasia terrane (previously regarded as the northernmost exposure of the Færingehavn terrane) consists of Palaeoarchaean rocks (>3600 Ma) tectonically bounded on its south by the 3075-2960 …

Complex 3670-3500 Ma Orogenic Episodes Superimposed On Juvenile Crust Accreted Between 3850 And 3690 Ma, Itsaq Gneiss Complex, Southern West Greenland, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The Itsaq Gneiss Complex of the Nuuk region, southern West Greenland, is dominated by 3850-3690 Ma tonalites intruded into and intercalated with lesser amounts of different ≥3850-3700 Ma supracrustal units. Published wholerock Sr and Nd isotopic studies demonstrate that the tonalites are juvenile crustal additions from a depleted mantle source. From our field studies and SHRIMP U/Pb zircon dating, we argue that this juvenile crustal accretion was spread over ca. 170 m.yr. (≥3850-3690 Ma). Following 3850-3690 Ma juvenile crustal accretion events, the evolution of the Itsaq Gneiss Complex continued with numerous crustal-reworking events between 3670 and 3500 Ma. Examples of …

The Paleoproterozoic Prøven Igneous Complex (PIC) in West Greenland extends from ca. 72°15′ to 73°10′N, approximately 500 km north of the subduction-related intrusive complex in the core of the +1100 km wide, asymmetric collisional Nagssugtoqidian-Rinkian Orogen. A new U-Pb SHRIMP age for the PIC of 1869±9 Ma indicates that it intruded synchronously with the main collisional phase of the orogen into the passive margin side of the collision. Sm-Nd and Lu-Hf isotopic and A-type geochemical signatures are compatible with its derivation from melted Archean lower crustal material contaminated to varying degrees by pelitic sedimentary rocks of the Karrat Group. A complex problem of dating supracrustal rocks is unavoidable by analysis of tectonic position of polymetamorphic amphibolite and granulite complexes. Geochronological dates are necessary to constrain ages of source rocks and accumulation periods of clastic sediments, while isotopic-geochemical parameters open a possibility to estimate model ages of the crust in provenances. Using the ion microprobe SHRIMPTM (Hiroshima, Japan), clastic zircons from metasediments of the Erzin and Moren complexes of the Tuva-Mongolian massif in accretionary collage of Central Asia are dated and the Nd model age of respective rocks are estimated. The U-Th-Pb isotopic data suggest that clastic zircons from supracrustal …

We have shown previously that a 'soluble' form of PrP (prion protein), not associated with membranous vesicles, exists in the male reproductive fluid [Ecroyd, Sarradin, Dacheux and Gatti (2004) Biol. Reprod. 71, 993-1001]. Attempts to purify this 'soluble' PrP indicated that it behaves like a high-molecular-mass complex of more than 350 kDa and always co-purified with the same set of proteins. The main associated proteins were sequenced by MS and were found to match to clusterin (apolipoprotein J), BPI (bacterial permeability-increasing protein), carboxylesterase-like urinary excreted protein (cauxin), beta-mannosidase and beta-galactosidase. Immunoblotting and enzymatic assay confirmed the presence of clusterin and …
