Development towards integrated computer-aided drug design methodologies is presented by utilising crystal structure complexes to produce structure-based pharmacophores. These novel pharmacophores represent the ligand features that are involved in interactions with the target protein, as well as the space around the ligand occupied by the protein. The protein-ligand complexes can also yield information about all interactions that ligands could potentially form with the binding site, as well as about the size of the binding cavity. A convenient five step synthesis of (S)-homolysine, incorporating a key olefin cross-metathesis step in the chain extension methodology, has been developed, together with a six step related synthesis of a new homologue of arginine, (S)-bishomoarginine.

Watershed management has become a prominent approach to natural resource management (NRM) in Australia and elsewhere. In the Australian State ofNew South Wales (NSW), catchment management - the NSW watershed management initiative - has been in place both in coastal and non-coastal areas for nearly two decades. In coastal areas, it is suggested that catchment management could play an important role in coastal and marine issues (NSW Coastcare et aI., 2004; Zann, 1996), as the Australia's coastal and marine environments have, in general, been affected by watershed-based activities (see e.g., Zann, 1996). Complex 3670-3500 Ma Orogenic Episodes Superimposed On Juvenile Crust Accreted Between 3850 And 3690 Ma, Itsaq Gneiss Complex, Southern West Greenland, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman

The Itsaq Gneiss Complex of the Nuuk region, southern West Greenland, is dominated by 3850-3690 Ma tonalites intruded into and intercalated with lesser amounts of different ≥3850-3700 Ma supracrustal units. Published wholerock Sr and Nd isotopic studies demonstrate that the tonalites are juvenile crustal additions from a depleted mantle source. From our field studies and SHRIMP U/Pb zircon dating, we argue that this juvenile crustal accretion was spread over ca. 170 m.yr. (≥3850-3690 Ma). Following 3850-3690 Ma juvenile crustal accretion events, the evolution of the Itsaq Gneiss Complex continued with numerous crustal-reworking events between 3670 and 3500 Ma. Examples of …

A complex problem of dating supracrustal rocks is unavoidable by analysis of tectonic position of polymetamorphic amphibolite and granulite complexes. Geochronological dates are necessary to constrain ages of source rocks and accumulation periods of clastic sediments, while isotopic-geochemical parameters open a possibility to estimate model ages of the crust in provenances. Using the ion microprobe SHRIMPTM (Hiroshima, Japan), clastic zircons from metasediments of the Erzin and Moren complexes of the Tuva-Mongolian massif in accretionary collage of Central Asia are dated and the Nd model age of respective rocks are estimated. The strength of Australian outback mythology in providing a blueprint for what Australian society, landscapes and history ought to be, lies at least partly in its ‘lack of specificity in time and space’, coupled with retrospect. Deborah Bird Rose has argued that such free-floating retrospect diverts attention from ‘here and now of our lives’, and militates against dealing with the consequences of Australia’s colonial past and present. The Early Palaeozoic Cape River Metamorphics consist mainly of psammitic gneiss and schist and occur as an extensive linear belt at the western margin of the Charters Towers Province 200 km southwest of Townsville in the northern Tasmanides. A prominent foliation (S2) is the main structure in the belt and is associated with tight to isoclinal folds, subparallel mineral and intersection lineations, and boudinaged pods of vein quartz and pegmatite. Startling archaeological and palaeoanthropological discoveries tend to generate a wealth of responses from different social and professional groups. The recent discovery of a 'hobbit' generated a response from academic institutions, the media and the general public that was unexpected, but at the same time very indicative of how human beings perceive themselves. We present vertical profiles of 18O fractionations in ozone, measured by balloon-borne infrared remote sensing between 15 and 40 km. The magnitudes of the 16O16O18O (668O3) and 16O18O16O (686O3) fractionations are 13.5 +/- 2.7% and 7.7 +/- 2.2%, averaged over the 20-35 km altitude range, in good agreement with previous atmospheric measurements by mass spectrometry and both infrared and far infrared remote sensing spectroscopy. We use our fractionation profiles, together with known fractionation effects of the ozone formation reaction, to deduce …

A quasi-static equivalent circuit model of a dumbbell shaped defected ground structure (DGS) is developed. The equivalent circuit model is derived from the equivalent inductance and capacitance developed due to the perturbed returned current path on the ground and the narrow gap, respectively. The theory is validated against the commercial full-wave solver CST Microwave Studio. Finally, the calculated results are compared with the measured results. Good agreement between the theory, the commercially available numerical analyses and the experimental results validates the developed theoretical model.

A survey of dust devils using the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) wide- and narrow-angle (WA and NA) images has been undertaken. The survey comprises two parts: (1) sampling of nine broad regions from September 1997 to July 2001 and (2) a focused seasonal monitoring of variability in the Amazonis region, an active dust devil site, from March 2001 to April 2004. For part 1, dust devils were identified in NA and WA images, and dust devil tracks were identified in NA images. Aboriginal people are involved in pastoral enterprises throughout the inland and north of Australia. This has generated difficulties as landowners and policymakers struggled with conflicts between Aboriginal social structures and the demands of running commercial businesses. Problems often arose due to imposition of nonindigenous norms regarding land use. It has been suggested that pastoralism can generate social and cultural benefits for Aboriginal landowners, but these have not been investigated in any detail. Drawing on the concept of social embeddedness and fieldwork with Aboriginal pastoralists, this article identifies, describes, and ranks sociocultural benefits arising from Aboriginal pastoralism. Carbon monoxide (CO) volume mixing ratio (VMR) profiles have been retrieved from ship-borne solar absorption spectra recorded in the Atlantic between 80°N and 70°S. CO profiles can be retrieved up to 30 km with a maximum altitude resolution of 4 km for a few layers. CO enhancements due to biomass burning have been detected. Recurring enhancements of CO were detected in the upper troposphere (10–15 km) in the equatorial regions and in the southern Atlantic (20°S–30°S). These enhancements could be traced back to African biomass burning sources as well as sources as far as South America. Similar results are observed …

This paper explores the concept that deltaic-estuarine geomorphology is a function of the dominant processes. It has been traditional to recognize river, wave and tidal processes as the principal controls on the gross morphology of deltas. To a lesser extent, these processes are also recognized as significant controls on the shape of estuaries. The complex deltas of the Southeast Asian region contain active deltaic plains and often extensive abandoned deltaic plains which preserve an imprint of the processes which have shaped them. In northern Australia, where estuaries are more extensive than deltas, similar geomorphological features can be recognized and the …

This review of photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) based on inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) deals with the mechanisms of operation and the various factors that influence the overall efficiency of PECs. The binding of arsenic in sediments of the heavily industrialised Port Kembla Harbour, NSW, Australia, has been investigated. Both dredge and core samples have been used to develop a sieving/sequential extraction (SE) procedure. Dredge samples included oxic surficial and deeper anoxic sediment. The main core sample analysed was 18 cm deep, sliced at 2 cm intervals. Sediment was sieved to three size ranges (250 microm) and each of these was then subjected to a four step SE, sequentially solubilizing arsenic as ion exchangeable, 1 M HCl soluble, NH(2)OH.HCl soluble, and strong oxidising acid soluble. We report on likely mixed paternity in a natural population of snow skinks (Niveoscincus mirolepidotus) from alpine Tasmania, Australia. This species is nonterritorial and males guard females after copulation, suggesting that guarding behavior has evolved to prevent rival mating of still-receptive females. To what degree does this mate-guarding prevent rival copulations? We sampled gravid females at random in the wild and looked for within-clutch mixed paternity among their offspring using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Incorporating all visualized fragments, offspring band-sharing based on maternal bands was 0.94 (60.05, SD), whereas for paternal fragments it was 0.54 (60.46, SD). We then …

Tropospheric partial column abundances of CO and HCN have been retrieved from infrared solar spectra observed with a ground-based spectrometer at Poker Flat Alaska (65°N, 147°W) over the time period from 2000 to 2004. From these data we report the transpacific transport induced inter-annual variability of tropospheric CO over Poker Flat. This is the first report of solar infrared data from the Poker Flat station, where the geographical location of the site means that remote sensing measurements are sampling the transport of transpacific air parcels going to Northern America from Eastern Siberia and Asia. Leaf senescence that occurs in the last stage of leaf development is a genetically programmed process. It is very significant to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control the initiation and progression of leaf senescence and the way the senescence signal is transduced. A coupled-channel Schrödinger equation (CSE) model of photodissociation, which includes the effects of all interactions between the , , and and the and states, is employed to study the effects of rotation on the lowest- band oscillator strengths and predissociationlinewidths. Significant rotational dependences are found which are in excellent agreement with recent experimental results, where comparisons are possible. The tropospheric mixing ratio profile of ethylene (C2H4)(C2H4) has been retrieved from a high spectral resolution ground-based infrared solar absorption spectrum. The spectrum was recorded during intense fires in New South Wales, Australia on January 1, 2002, and was analyzed with the C2H4C2H4 spectral parameters added to the 2000 HITRAN compilation. Absorption by C2H4C2H4 in the smoke-affected spectrum extends over a broad spectral range in a region with observable rotational fine structure. The previous chapter was mainly concerned with the effects of strong winds generated by secondary features of general air circulation. These winds were associated with the development of low-pressure cells spanning areas of 10,000–100,000 km−2. While tropical cyclones and extra-tropical depressions produce some of the strongest winds and highest amounts of precipitation over the widest areas, they are by no means the only source of high winds or heavy precipitation. These values can be matched by thunderstorms, which cover no more than 500 km2 in area and rarely travel more than 100–200 km before dissipating. They can produce high-magnitude, short-period …

Total column amounts of CO, CH4, CO2 and N2O retrieved from SCIAMACHY nadir observations in its near-infrared channels have been compared to data from a ground-based quasi-global network of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. The SCIAMACHY data considered 5 here have been produced by three different retrieval algorithms, WFM-DOAS (version 0.4, 0.41 for CH4), IMAP-DOAS (version 0.9) and IMLM (version 5.5) and cover the January to December 2003 time period. Comparisons have been made for individual data, as well as for monthly averages. The extent, sequence, synchrony and correlates of diel displacements by animals can provide powerful insights into the ecological and social factors that shape an organism's day-to-day activities, but detailed data on spatial ecology are available for very few tropical taxa. Radiotelemetric monitoring of 25 slatey-grey snakes (Stegonotus cucullatus) on a floodplain in the Australian wet-dry tropics for periods of 40 to 355 d (mean=195 d, 136 locations per snake) provided extensive information on habitat use, movement patterns and home range size of these large slender-bodied colubrids. The primary rationale of the Early Indian Petroglyphs Project is to investigate claims of the occurrence of Lower Palaeolithic petroglyphs in central regions of India. Other purposes of this multifacetted research project are to provide new data for the chronology of the Middle and Late Pleistocene hominin history of India; to introduce scientific methods of rock art dating in this country; and to investigate its Lower Palaeolithic stone tool industries. This project, a collaboration of Indian and Australian researchers, was commenced in 2001. The phosphine-catalysed [3+2]-cycloaddition of 5-methylenehydantoins 4 with the ylides 5, derived from addition of tributylphosphine to the 2-butynoic acid derivatives, 6a-d, gives spiro-heterocyclic products. The camphor sultam derivative 6b gives optically active products. Noteable was that the ylides derived from ethyl 2-butynoate and the 3-(2-butynoyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one derivatives 6c and 6d gave spiro-heterocyclic products with reverse regioselectivities. The N,N-dibenzylprotected cycloadduct has been converted to carbocyclic hydantocidin and 6,7-diepi-carbocyclic hydantocidin.
