Rotationally Resolved Infrared Spectrum Of The Na+-D2 Complex: An Experimental And Theoretical Study, Berwyck L. Poad, V Dryza, J Klos, A A. Buchachenko, E J. Bieske

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The infrared spectrum of mass-selected Na+-D2 complexes is recorded in the D-D stretch vibration region (2915-2972 cm−1) by detecting Na+ photofragments resulting from photo-excitation of the complexes. Analysis of the rotationally resolved spectrum confirms a T-shaped equilibrium geometry for the complex and a vibrationally averaged intermolecular bond length of 2.461 Å. The D-D stretch band centre occurs at 2944.04 cm−1, representing a −49.6 cm−1 shift from the Q1(0) transition of the free D2 molecule. Variational rovibrational energy level calculations are performed for Na+-D2 utilising an ab initio potential energy surface developed previously for investigating the Na+-H2 complex [B. L. J. …

Shell Artefacts And Shell-Working Within The Lapita Cultural Complex, Katherine A. Szabo

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Despite a consistent presence in the archaeological record of the Lapita cultural complex, and their omnipresence in the associated literature, the nature and range of shell artefacts recovered from Lapita sites has only been partially summarized at best. Considering the categories of raw material choice, working techniques, formal artefact types and curation, this article summarizes our current knowledge and points to areas for further research.

Average Mass Scan Of The Total Ion Chromatogram Versus Percentage Chemical Composition In Multivariate Statistical Comparison Of Complex Volatile Mixtures, Niko Radulovic, Polina Blagojevic, Danielle Skropeta

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The analysis of complex volatile mixtures by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is a time-consuming process. It involves separation and identification of the components based on their retention times and fragmentation patterns, followed by determination of their relative percentages from integration of their peak areas. Herein we show that multivariate statistical analysis of the relative abundances of the m/z values obtained from the average mass scans (AMS) of the complex mixture is a faster and potentially more reliable method of assessing these mixtures. To achieve this, 15 model complex mixtures, were prepared comprising varying amounts of 10 different constituents. The AMS …

Spectroscopic Study Of The Benchmark Mn+-H2 Complex, Viktoras Dryza, Berwyck L. J Poad, Evan J. Bieske

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We have recorded the rotationally resolved infrared spectrum of the weakly bound Mn+-H2 complex in the H-H stretch region (4022-4078 cm(-1)) by monitoring Mn+ photodissociation products. The band center of Mn+-H2, the H-H stretch transition, is shifted by -111.8 cm(-1) from the transition of the free H2 molecule. The spectroscopic data suggest that the Mn+-H2 complex consists of a slightly perturbed H2 molecule attached to the Mn+ ion in a T-shaped configuration with a vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation of 2.73 A. Together with the measured Mn+...H2 binding energy of 7.9 kJ/mol (Weis, P.; et al. J. Phys. Chem. A 1997, …

Eoarchaean crust in West Greenland (the Itsaq Gneiss Complex, 3870-3600 Ma) is >80% by volume orthogneisses derived from plutonic tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suites,3850, c. 3810 and c. 3710 Mahave some compositional similarities to modern island arc basalts (IAB), suggesting their origin by hydrous fluxing of a suprasubduction-zone upper mantle wedge. Most of the Eoarchaean tonalites match in composition high-silica, low-magnesian adakites, whose petrogenesis is dominated by partial melting of garnetiferous mafic rocks at high pressure. However, associated with the tonalites are volumetrically minor more magnesian quartz diorites, whose genesis probably involved melting of depleted mantle to which some slab-derived component had …

Detrital Zircon Sedimentary Provenance Ages For The Eoarchaean Isua Supracrustal Belt Southern West Greenland: Juxtaposition Of An Imbricated Ca. 3700 Ma Juvenile Arc Against An Older Complex With 3920-3760 Ma Components, Allen P. Nutman, Clark R L Friend, Shane Paxton Jan 2009

The amphibolite facies Eoarchaean Isua supracrustal belt (northern part of the Nuuk region, southern West Greenland) is dominated by strongly deformed metabasalts, with chert, banded iron formation, felsic volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks and minor gabbro and sedimentary carbonates. It comprises a suture zone between a northern terrane formed at ca. 3700 Ma and a southern one formed at ca. 3800 Ma. At the junction between these two terranes is a strongly tectonised, thin unit of metachert, BIF and carbonate-bearing rocks with minor detrital components, named the dividing sedimentary unit. Away from the belt, the northern terrane is dominated by ca. …

~3,850 Ma Tonalites In The Nuuk Region, Greenland: Geochemistry And Their Reworking Within An Eoarchaean Gneiss Complex, Allen P. Nutman, Vickie C. Bennett, Clark R. L Friend, Kenji Horie, Hiroshi Hidaka Jan 2007

~3,850 Ma Tonalites In The Nuuk Region, Greenland: Geochemistry And Their Reworking Within An Eoarchaean Gneiss Complex, Allen P. Nutman, Vickie C. Bennett, Clark R. L Friend, Kenji Horie, Hiroshi Hidaka

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The Eoarchaean (>3,600 Ma) Itsaq Gneiss Complex of southern West Greenland is dominated by polyphase orthogneisses with a complex Archaean tectonothermal history. Some of the orthogneisses have c. 3,850 Ma zircons, and they vary from rare single phase metatonalites to more common complexly banded migmatites. This is due to heterogeneous strain, in situ anatexis and granitic veining superimposed during younger tectonothermal events. In the single-phase tonalites with c. 3,850 Ma zircon, oscillatory-zoned prismatic zircon is all 3,850 Ma old, but shows patchy ancient loss of radiogenic Pb. SHRIMP spot analyses and laser ablation ICP-MS depth profiling show that thin …

The Itsaq Gneiss Complex Of Southern West Greeland And The Construction Of Eoarchaean Crust At Convergent Plate Boundaries, Allen P. Nutman, Clark R. L Friend, Kenji Horie, Hiroshi Hidaka

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The ca. 3000 km2ItsaqGneissComplex of the Nuuk region, southernWestGreenland was the first body of pre-3600 Ma crust discovered. Such ancient gneisses are now also known elsewhere, but in total form only about a millionth of the modern crust. The other 99.9999% of ancient crust was destroyed by melting and erosion over billions of years. Understanding the origin of this oldest crust is hampered by metamorphism (repeatedly) in the amphibolite or granulite facies, and most of it having been strongly deformed. The ItsaqGneissComplex is dominated by polyphase grey gneisses derived from several suites of tonalites, granites and subordinate quartz-diorites and ferro-gabbros …

Rotationally Resolved Infrared Spectrum Of The Li+_D2 Cation Complex, C D. Thompson, C Emmeluth, B L. J Poad, G H. Weddle, E J. Bieske Jan 2006

Rotationally Resolved Infrared Spectrum Of The Li+_D2 Cation Complex, C D. Thompson, C Emmeluth, B L. J Poad, G H. Weddle, E J. Bieske

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The infrared spectrum of mass selected Li +-D 2 cations is recorded in the D-D stretch region (2860-2950 cm -1) in a tandem mass spectrometer by monitoring Li + photofragments. The D-D stretch vibration of Li +-D 2 is shifted by -79 cm -1 from that of the free D 2 molecule indicating that the vibrational excitation of the D 2 subunit strengthens the effective Li +-D 2 intermolecular interaction. Around 100 rovibrational transitions, belonging to parallel K a=0-0, 1-1, and 2-2 subbands, are fitted to a Watson A-reduced Hamiltonian to yield effective molecular parameters. The infrared spectrum shows that …

New Pieces To The Archaean Terrane Jigsaw Puzzle In The Nuuk Region, Southern West Greeland: Steps In Transforming A Simple Insight Into A Complex Regional Tectonothermal Model, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman Jan 2005

New Pieces To The Archaean Terrane Jigsaw Puzzle In The Nuuk Region, Southern West Greeland: Steps In Transforming A Simple Insight Into A Complex Regional Tectonothermal Model, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

In the south of the Nuuk region of West Greenland our 1980s mapping recognized four Archaean gneiss terranes (Færingehavn, Tre Brødre, Tasiusarsuaq and Akia terranes) with different protolith ages and separate early tectonothermal histories. Later in the Archaean these were juxtaposed and then experienced the same 2700-2500 Ma tectonothermal events. Here we abandon extrapolation of only these four terranes across the whole region, and distinguish two new terranes in the NE. The northernmost Isukasia terrane (previously regarded as the northernmost exposure of the Færingehavn terrane) consists of Palaeoarchaean rocks (>3600 Ma) tectonically bounded on its south by the 3075-2960 …

Complex 3670-3500 Ma Orogenic Episodes Superimposed On Juvenile Crust Accreted Between 3850 And 3690 Ma, Itsaq Gneiss Complex, Southern West Greenland, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman Jan 2005

Complex 3670-3500 Ma Orogenic Episodes Superimposed On Juvenile Crust Accreted Between 3850 And 3690 Ma, Itsaq Gneiss Complex, Southern West Greenland, Clark R L Friend, Allen Phillip Nutman

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The Itsaq Gneiss Complex of the Nuuk region, southern West Greenland, is dominated by 3850-3690 Ma tonalites intruded into and intercalated with lesser amounts of different ≥3850-3700 Ma supracrustal units. Published wholerock Sr and Nd isotopic studies demonstrate that the tonalites are juvenile crustal additions from a depleted mantle source. From our field studies and SHRIMP U/Pb zircon dating, we argue that this juvenile crustal accretion was spread over ca. 170 m.yr. (≥3850-3690 Ma). Following 3850-3690 Ma juvenile crustal accretion events, the evolution of the Itsaq Gneiss Complex continued with numerous crustal-reworking events between 3670 and 3500 Ma. Examples of …

Age, Petrogenesis And Metamorphism Of The Syn-Collisional Proven Igneous Complex, West Greenland, Kristine Thrane, J Baker, J Connelly, Allen Phillip Nutman

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The Paleoproterozoic Prøven Igneous Complex (PIC) in West Greenland extends from ca. 72°15′ to 73°10′N, approximately 500 km north of the subduction-related intrusive complex in the core of the +1100 km wide, asymmetric collisional Nagssugtoqidian-Rinkian Orogen. A new U-Pb SHRIMP age for the PIC of 1869±9 Ma indicates that it intruded synchronously with the main collisional phase of the orogen into the passive margin side of the collision. Sm-Nd and Lu-Hf isotopic and A-type geochemical signatures are compatible with its derivation from melted Archean lower crustal material contaminated to varying degrees by pelitic sedimentary rocks of the Karrat Group. The …

The Epididymal Soluble Prion Protein Forms A High-Molecular-Mass Complex In Association With Hydrophobic Proteins, Heath W. Ecroyd, Maya Belghazi, Jean-Louis Dacheux, Jean-Luc Gatti Jan 2005

The Epididymal Soluble Prion Protein Forms A High-Molecular-Mass Complex In Association With Hydrophobic Proteins, Heath W. Ecroyd, Maya Belghazi, Jean-Louis Dacheux, Jean-Luc Gatti

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We have shown previously that a 'soluble' form of PrP (prion protein), not associated with membranous vesicles, exists in the male reproductive fluid [Ecroyd, Sarradin, Dacheux and Gatti (2004) Biol. Reprod. 71, 993-1001]. Attempts to purify this 'soluble' PrP indicated that it behaves like a high-molecular-mass complex of more than 350 kDa and always co-purified with the same set of proteins. The main associated proteins were sequenced by MS and were found to match to clusterin (apolipoprotein J), BPI (bacterial permeability-increasing protein), carboxylesterase-like urinary excreted protein (cauxin), beta-mannosidase and beta-galactosidase. Immunoblotting and enzymatic assay confirmed the presence of clusterin and …

An Automated Gis Method For Modeling Relative Wave Exposure Within Complex Reef-Island Systems: A Case Study Of The Great Barrier Reef, Marjetta L. Puotinen Jan 2005

An Automated Gis Method For Modeling Relative Wave Exposure Within Complex Reef-Island Systems: A Case Study Of The Great Barrier Reef, Marjetta L. Puotinen

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Patterns of wave energy play a significant role in shaping the long-term structure of coral reef communities worldwide. For example, sections of reefs have been shown to vary greatly in morphology (dominant size class, growth form) as coral colonies adapt in response to local-scale differences in the wave heights typically experienced. These differences result in zonation (crest, lagoon, and slope), producing characteristic growth forms and species assemblages that vary in their vulnerability to damage from waves (Done 1993). Those communities experiencing the greatest typical wave energy align themselves parallel to the water flow, adopt stream-lined forms and are usually smaller …
