Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle

Summary and Conclusions: Sprinkler irrigation will continue to expand in Utah as well as in other irrigated areas of the world. This method of irrigation is suitable to all farm crops grown in the state and to most soils. It is particularly adapted to steep foothill areas where the water supply can be obtained at higher elevation and pumping is not necessary to develop pressure for the sprinkler systems. Also, much of the irrigated land of the state, particularly along the Wasatch front, is owned and operated by "part-time" farmers. This paper discusses the various ways in which aquatic organisms may be of use in solving problems associated with waste disposal. Since many state and federal laws set forth that nothing may be discharged that is deleterious to aquatic life, the most expedient way to determine the effect of an effluent is to study the aquatic organisms themselves.

Riding Mountain National Park is located in southwestern Manitoba within easy reach of important centres of population. From park headquarters at Wasagaming, it is only 140 miles southeast to Winnipeg, 57 miles south to Brandon, 35 miles north to Dauphin, and 102 miles to the International Boundary. Most of the surrounding country is devoted to agriculture.

The total park area approximates 1,148 square miles. Except for restricted tourist areas, it remains in a primitive condition, with unspoiled forests, prairies, streams, and lakes.

The decline or disappearance of game populations - often over considerable areas - following changes in habitat brought about by agricultural, urban, or industrial developments demonstrates clearly the effects of the elimination of desirable habitat. This document, submitted by Ann Frazier in 1953, presents a comprehensive study of petroleum resources, production, and consumption within the United States and foreign countries, specifically examining their relationship to national welfare and security. In the year 1946, two townships of 36 square miles each were selected for experimental work in aerial censusing. The primary objective was to devise a technique for obtaining complete counts of upland game birds on limited areas during the winter months.

The aerial survey proved to be very satisfactory when snow conditions are right. All available cover must be well filled with snow, with very few bare spots in fields or other parts of the area. The birds tend to congregate on such bare places where it is very difficult to see them from the plane.

A survey was conducted in 1953 to determine the feasibility of using aerial photography to measure the trends in available waterfowl habitat in the Nebraska Sandhills. This pilot survey included 96 one-square-mile sections systematically distributed over the area to give a 0.49 percent sampling rate.

The basic waterfo\o1l habitat types apparent on the aerial photos of these sections were identified and measured with a planimeter and map measure. These ascertained totals were then projected to obtain the estimated total of each habitat type in the study area.

Summary of your 1953 Winter Records

As we have mentioned before, an important item from the winter counts is the ratio of cock pheasants to hen pheasants after the season has ended. Your winter records showed 88 cocks per 100 hens for the state as a whole. In extreme southeastern Nebraska (where pheasants are scarce), and for central and western Nebraska, you recorded more cocks than hens. For most of the eastern third of the state (where most of the pheasant hunting is done) you recorded two cocks for every three hens. This reflects the removal of more cocks by …

Berry of South Dakota, to consider the possibility of giving national recognition to Wounded Knee Battlefield, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. Limited Date on the battlefield was presented on April 22 to the Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings, and Monuments. The California Quail is native to the coastal and semi-arid regions of California extending north into Oregon. Two subspecies are commonly recognized. the California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens Ridgway), and the Valley Quail (Lophortyx californica californica Shaw). The two forms are very similar in coloration and habits and, for the purpose of this study, no effort is made to distinguish the two.

The Nebraska Breeding Ground Survey has been conducted for the fifth consecutive year. This survey is aimed at providing indicators to the waterfowl population through measuring the seasonal and year b,y year trends in breeding numbers and production success. The survey recognizes the sandhill region as the most important waterfowl-producing area of Nebraska and therefore, studies have been largely concentrated there.
