Supply Chain Sustainability: Understanding The Financial Impact, Matthew J. Guinn
Supply Chain Sustainability: Understanding The Financial Impact, Matthew J. Guinn
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a differential impact on the financial performance of a company between environmental and social events.
This study uses a randomization of publicly traded companies within specific, pre-determined SIC codes, which is a collection of 66 companies, split between manufacturing and retail, to get the most accurate representation.
This study utilizes multiple regression models via STATA to analyze data compiled from the Wharton Research Database Services (WRDS) utilizing the MSCI ESG KLD, and Bloomberg, to analyze the percent increase in stock price which is the overarching models independent variable. Then, …
Spatial Analysis Of Mountaintop Mining's Impact On Water Quality, Samantha Cahill
Spatial Analysis Of Mountaintop Mining's Impact On Water Quality, Samantha Cahill
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
Mountaintop coal mining (MTM) has been shown to have negative effects on both biological communities and water quality downstream of mining. Impacts of MTM can still be seen decades after the mining has ended, leading to the conclusion that the cumulative effects of mining last decades after the mining has ended. Here, I aim to analyze the effects of MTM on both water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates in streams of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky. I combine a remotely sensed mining landcover product with data on water quality parameters and stream macroinvertebrate communities from state and federal monitoring programs …

Frequency Of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Information Provided In The Media: Impacts, Ecology, And Citizen Outreach, Anna Killeen Cameron, Casey Fellhoelter, Bevin Hardy, Lucas Smith
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
An analysis of 165 media articles about the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive insect killing native hemlocks in eastern North America, was undertaken to determine possible influences of the public’s desire and ability to help with invasive species prevention and control. All of the articles mention at least one of the following: HWA impacts to ecosystems (55.2%), hemlock characteristics (47%), and the value of hemlocks (38.8%). Articles that mention HWA impacts and hemlock value also mention associated topics such as subsequent impacts from hemlock loss to shade and temperature control of forests and streams, trout and recreational fishing, and …

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
Water quality analysis is vital to ensure the health of water sources, as well as identifying pollutants and modeling how they affect a river system. Current methods of collecting water samples consist of stationary samplers that measure changes in water quality at only one location over time. We have designed a mobile, canoe-mounted, water quality analyzing system that will enable researchers to efficiently collect a large number of water quality samples with an associated GPS location and depth for each data point. While the canoe travels in parallel swaths bank to bank, the unit will alternately collect samples from 3 …

The Increasing Biological Information Sources: Technical Assistance and Support for Delivery and Technology Transfer (IBIS) project was funded by the United States Geological Survey’s National Biological Infrastructure (NBII) to identify relevant data sets in areas of research that served NBII’s stakeholders: environmental decision makers, researchers and scientists including citizen scientists, and teachers and students. The IBIS project also developed biodiversity information tools and services to address the accessibility of USGS provided biodiversity information.
For this report, forty data sets were identified and analyzed by the IBIS researchers; the results of the data set interviews are presented in this …
