Movement And Transformation Of Selected Organic Pollutants In Subsurface Environmet In Arkansas, Ali U. Shaikh
Movement And Transformation Of Selected Organic Pollutants In Subsurface Environmet In Arkansas, Ali U. Shaikh
Technical Reports
Several subsurface soil and groundwater samples from eastern, southern and central Arkansas were analyzed for chlorinated organic compounds commonly used as pesticides and industrial chemicals. No significant amount of these compounds were found in these samples. The adsorption/partition characteristics of some of these compounds, such as dichlorophenols, aldrin and endrin, were determined in siltloam, sandyloam and clay soils collected from the above geographical locations. Results indicate that there is considerable difference in retention capability of different types of soils with respect to different pollutants. The partition coefficient of a particular compound in a certain type of soil can be related …

The Soil Phosphorus Store, G S P Ritchie, D. M. Weaver
The Soil Phosphorus Store, G S P Ritchie, D. M. Weaver
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The management of the soil phosphorus store, or 'super bank' to minimise phosphorus leaching losses is a vital part of any strategy to reduce algal pollution of the Peel-Harvey estuary.
Phosphorus can exist in the soil in four main 'pools'. it may occur in the soil solution or in one of the three pools that contain phosphorus in solid forms. This phosphorus can be in compounds (fertilisers, dead plant material); adsorbed (attached) to soil particles such as organic matter, clay and iron oxide; or as constituents of micro-organisms.
Simultaneous Transport Of Water And 3hoh In Water, H. D. Scott
Simultaneous Transport Of Water And 3hoh In Water, H. D. Scott
Technical Reports
Dispersion of 3HOH was studied at flow velocities less than 14 cm/day in a Captina silt loam using the half-cell technique. Two directions of transport were studied: movement of 3HOH in the same direction as water, and movement of 3HOH in the opposite direction to that of water. Results indicated that the dispersion coefficients were velocity dependent for equilibration times ranging to 21 hours. As the average pore flow velocity increased, the length of time needed for the dispersion coefficients to become independent of the flow velocity increased. When considering transport of 3HOH in the same …

Evaluation Of Areas For Off-Road Recreational Motorcycle Use, Volume Ii: Alternate Soil Suitability Determination Methods, United States Army Corps Of Engineers
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Volume I of this report described how to evaluate the soil suitability of areas for off-road recreational motorcycle (trailbike) use on land under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Army. This soil evaluation method relied on the availability of a recent, detailed soil survey. Since such surveys are not always available, Volume II describes alternative methods of evaluating the suitability of soils for trailbike use. Volume II illustrates and describes seven alternative soil evaluation methods. Each method is defined as more or less useful in terms of its reliability and the ease and speed by which its results may …

Capillary-Diffusion And Self-Diffusion Of Liquid Water In Unsaturated Soils, Ronald E. Phillips, V. L. Quisenberry Jr.
Capillary-Diffusion And Self-Diffusion Of Liquid Water In Unsaturated Soils, Ronald E. Phillips, V. L. Quisenberry Jr.
KWRRI Research Reports
Capillary-diffusion coefficients were measured by use of inflow and outflow methods. With both methods the capillary-diffusion coefficients decreased very rapidly with decreasing water content. The lighter textured soils were found to have the higher diffusion coefficients over the entire moisture content range studied, 0 to 1 bar tension.
Self-diffusion coefficients were measured over a moisture content range from air dryness to saturation using 3H as a tracer of water. Each of the soils gave the same diffusion characteristics when the self-diffusion coefficients were expressed as a function of either water content or average number of water layers on the …

Irrigation: Soil-Plant-Water Relationships, Soil Conservation Service, Engineering Division
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Soil-Plant-Water relationships describes those properties of soils and plants that affect the movement, retention, and use of water essential to plant growth. This publication attempts to provide engineers the basic data necessary to plan and maintain efficient conservation irrigation practices to provide a permanent irrigated agriculture engineering principles and research findings have been screened to give emphasis to the information needed to design, install, and operate irrigation systems on farms or groups of farms.
