The Goose

The Sea Squad is a band of cheerleaders against climate change. Taking action as a team in formation, they gather momentum, inviting all people to cheer with them, mimicking the infinitely expandable nature of the seas' molecular structure. The work was developed and performed as a bilingual project at Est-Nord-Est in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, Canada, and has since been performed and exhibited internationally. The following poems are some of the chants that Sea Squad use to get a crowd cheering together against climate change.

A study was conducted to determine if 100% or 50% harvesting of collard leaves was a suitable recommendation for Tunnel House producers. The experiment was conducted as a split-split plot design with varieties as the main plots, harvesting 100% or 50% of leaves as the sub-plots, and days after transplanting as the subplots. All treatments were replicated three times, drip irrigated, and fertilized according to soil test recommendations. The results showed significant interactions between varieties and method of harvest, for leaf numbers and weight. Conversely, the varieties showed significant differences for yield but not leaf numbers. Both varieties showed significant …

Human impact on the environment is driving a decline in biodiversity that heightens the need for informed management of conservation lands. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, are an increasingly cost-effective tool for generating high-quality data used to map landscape features, analyze land cover change and assess the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Traditional sources of remotely sensed data such as satellites and aircraft can be costly, inflexible and unable to detect fine-scale surface variation. This work considers the literacy of a geospatial text that is readily accessible to students, but often assumed to be intuitive to read– dynamic scalable satellite imagery, which often serves as base maps for common navigation, GIS, and virtual globe applications. ผักตบชวากับการบำบัดสารมลพิษในน้ำ, นัยนันทน์ อริยกานนท์

การปนเปื้อนของสารมลพิษในแหล่งน้ำจัดว่าเป็นปัญหาทางสิ่งแวดล้อมที่สำคัญของประเทศไทย และในหลายภูมิภาคทั่วโลก เนื่องมาจากการขยายตัวของภาคอุตสาหกรรม การเกษตรกรรมแนวใหม่ และการบริโภควัตถุที่มากเกินความต้องการของประชาชน ส่งผลให้เกิดผลกระทบหลายประการ เช่น แหล่งน้ำเน่าเสียจากภาวะ Eutrophication หรือแหล่งน้ำปนเปื้อนโลหะหนักและสารฆ่าแมลง ทำให้น้ำมีคุณภาพต่ำจนไม่สามารถนำมาใช้ในการอุปโภคบริโภคได้ การบำบัดสารมลพิษในน้ำสามารถทำได้ทั้งวิธีทางกายภาพ เคมี และชีวภาพ สำหรับวิธีทางกายภาพและเคมี เช่น การแยกสารมลพิษโดยใช้ความร้อน (thermal desorption) การแลกเปลี่ยนไอออน (ion exchange) การกรองแยกผ่านเมมเบรน (membrane separation-filtration) หรือการบำบัดทางสารเคมี (chemical treatment) ล้วนเป็นวิธีที่มีประสิทธิภาพดี ใช้ระยะเวลาสั้น และเหมาะสมในกรณีที่สารมลพิษมีความเข้มข้นสูง แต่เทคนิคดังกล่าวมักจะมีค่าใช้จ่ายสูงทั้งในเรื่องของเครื่องมือและอุปกรณ์ รวมทั้งค่าใช้จ่ายในการดูแลรักษาระบบ ดังนั้นนักวิทยาศาสตร์จึงมีแนวความคิดที่จะนำพืชสีเขียวมาใช้บำบัดสารมลพิษ (Phytoremediation) ที่ปนเปื้อนในสิ่งแวดล้อม ซึ่งวิธีนี้จะสามารถบำบัดได้ทั้งสารมลพิษประเภทสารอินทรีย์และสารอนินทรีย์ มีต้นทุนต่ำ และประหยัดพลังงาน ผักตบชวา หรือ water hyacinth มีชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms จัดอยู่ในวงศ์ Pontederiaceae ผักตบชวาเป็นพืชที่มีการศึกษาวิจัยกันมาอย่างต่อเนื่องทั้งในประเทศ และต่างประเทศในเรื่องความสามารถในการบำบัดสารมลพิษที่ปนเปื้อนในแหล่งน้ำ ในกรณีของสารมลพิษอินทรีย์ พบว่าผักตบชวาสามารถบำบัดอินทรียวัตถุและธาตุอาหาร เช่น ไนโตรเจน และฟอสฟอรัส รวมทั้งสารฆ่าแมลงบางชนิดด้วย ส่วนสารอนินทรีย์พบว่า ผักตบชวาสามารถสะสมแคดเมียม โครเมียม ทองแดง ปรอท ตะกั่ว ซีเซียม สตรอนเทียม และยูเรเนียมได้ในปริมาณสูง ทั้งนี้กลไกในการบำบัดสารมลพิษแต่ละประเภทที่เกิดขึ้นภายในต้นผักตบชวาน่าจะมีความแตกต่างกัน

การประเมินคุณภาพอากาศในสวนสาธารณะในกรุงเทพมหานครด้วยไลเคน, ชัยวัฒน์ บุญเพ็ง, ชุติมา ศรีวิบูลย์, กัณฑรีย์ บุญประกอบ

ไลเคนถูกนำมาใช้เป็นดัชนีชี้วัดคุณภาพอากาศอย่างแพร่หลาย โดยเฉพาะในยุโรปและอเมริกา การศึกษาครั้งนี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อใช้ไลเคนตรวจวัดและประเมินคุณภาพอากาศในสวนสาธารณะในกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยทำการเก็บตัวอย่างไลเคนชนิด Parmotrema tinctorum จากบริเวณที่มีอากาศบริสุทธิ์ในอุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่ จากนั้นนำไปติดไว้บนต้นไม้ในสวนสาธารณะ 10 แห่ง ในกรุงเทพมหานคร พื้นที่เกษตรกรรม และพื้นที่ควบคุม เป็นระยะเวลา 140 วัน จากนั้นนำตัวอย่างกลับมาวิเคราะห์ปริมาณไนเตรท (NO3-) และซัลเฟต (SO42-) ที่สะสมในไลเคน รวมทั้งวัดค่าทางสรีรวิทยาด้วย พบว่า ปริมาณสารทั้งสองชนิดมีค่าสูงสุดในกรุงเทพมหานคร รองลงมาคือพื้นที่เกษตรกรรม และต่ำสุดที่พื้นที่ควบคุม ส่วนค่าทางสรีรวิทยาพบว่าสวนสาธารณะที่อยู่ในย่านใจกลางเมือง ได้แก่ สวนลุมพินี สวนสันติภาพ และสวนวชิรเบญจทัศ ซึ่งล้อมรอบด้วยการจราจรที่หนาแน่น มีค่าต่ำกว่าสวนอื่น ๆ ที่อยู่รอบนอกอย่างชัดเจน บ่งชี้ว่าไลเคนที่ย้ายปลูกในสวนเหล่านี้ได้รับผลกระทบจากมลพิษทางอากาศมากกว่า การศึกษานี้ยืนยันว่าไลเคนสามารถนำมาใช้เป็นดัชนีชี้วัดคุณภาพอากาศในประเทศไทยได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ และการวัดค่าทางสรีรวิทยาของไลเคนสามารถใช้เป็นสัญญาณเตือนภัยเบื้องต้นของมลพิษทางอากาศได้

This special issue contains six papers on the development of students’ knowledge, skills, and practice of geospatial thinking in a variety of educational contexts. Each of the papers addresses an aspect of the research gap that deserves timely attention in the field, focusing on curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, exemplary resources or tools, and strategies to move forward for the promotion of geospatial teaching and learning. Vegetation Land Cover/Land Use dynamics (VLC/LU) are the result of complex and compound interactions between the human (cultural, socioeconomic, and political) and the physical environment at different spatial scales. The present study assesses the spatial distribution of VLC/LU dynamics from 1987 to 2015 in the North-Eastern highlands of Tanzania using both qualitative (in-depth interviews and focus group discussions) and quantitative techniques (spatio-temporal analysis through GIS). The qualitative approach was used to elicit information on the main drivers of VLC/LU changes by land users as transitions occurred with time. There has been a recent increase in use of an organized, forest ‘collaborative’ group approach for multi-stakeholder input on federal forestlands in the U.S. West. This approach relies on the creation of shared trust to achieve social agreement. Yet growing critiques suggest a lack of trust in the U.S. Forest Service [Forest Service], between stakeholders, and the collaborative process itself. We conducted three comparative case studies of established forest collaborative groups in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho to ask how trust is created and damaged or broken in this context. Collaborative processes for working toward common management goals between individuals and organizations, despite their differences, emerged as one enduring legacy resulting from the Timber Wars in the American West during the late-1980s and the early 1990s. Power imbalances are often cited as a common problem in collaborative processes and can have a lasting, deleterious impact on the collaborative process and its outcomes.
