Combat Effectiveness Evaluation Of Anti-Ship Missiles For Intelligent Autonomous Recognition, Long Zhang, Xuanming Feng, Zhen Lei, Bo Yang, Ying Wang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the core issues of poor adaptability of static fusion strategies in existing recognition models, as well as the simplistic evaluation system and its disconnection from dynamic confrontation requirements, a practical four-dimensional evaluation system encompassing "recognition accuracy, antijamming stability, decision timeliness, and modal complementarity" was constructed, and an operational effectiveness composite index (OECI) capable of dynamically adapting to tactical scenarios was proposed. A multimodal dynamic attention fusion network (MDA-Net) for anti-ship missiles in complex confrontation environments was designed. Through heterogeneous feature decoupling, dynamic weighting of cross-modal attention, and a hierarchical gating decision mechanism, the autonomous evaluation and adaptive …

Human-Centered Electric Vehicle Adoption Framework For Smart Mobility: Modeling Perceived Range And Charging Anxiety As A Psychological Barrier, Fatemeh Nazari, Abolfazl (Kouros) Mohammadian, Thomas Stephens

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a transformative pathway toward reducing the environmental, economic, and health-related externalities of internal combustion engine vehicles in urban settings. Despite substantial advances in battery technology, charging infrastructure expansion, and supportive policy incentives, EV penetration remains limited which poses challenges for smart and sustainable mobility planning. A critical yet insufficiently modeled barrier to adoption lies in the psychological perceptions surrounding electric driving range and charging reliability, which is commonly framed as “range anxiety,” but more broadly reflecting perceived range and charging anxiety. To address this gap, this study introduces a latent psychological construct capturing individuals’ perceived range …

Three-Dimensional Gaussian Reconstruction Of Large-Scale Scenes Under Multi-View Geometry Constraints, Haohao Cui, Yanqiang Di, Qing Liu, Xianguo Meng

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To enhance the geometry reconstruction quality of the GS algorithm in large-scale scene reconstruction, an optimization method constrained by multi-view geometry reconstruction results was proposed. 2D Gaussian planes were used as geometric primitives to overcome depth anisotropy, and dense depth maps generated by DUSt3R and aligned by sparse point clouds were introduced as constraints. By designing a multi-stage optimization strategy that decouples geometry and rendering, the gradient conflict problem in multi-objective training was solved. Experiments on the MatrixCity dataset indicate that the method surpasses comparison methods in related indicators of geometry reconstruction quality and rendering quality in large-scale scenes. …

Parameter Dependent Chen-Fliess Series And Their Nonrecursive Interconnections, Natalie T. Pham Aug 2026

Parameter Dependent Chen-Fliess Series And Their Nonrecursive Interconnections, Natalie T. Pham

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In control theory, a Chen-Fliess functional series is a weighted sum of iterated integrals constructed from a given set of input functions. Such series can be used to represent nonlinear input-output systems. In applications, they have been employed to characterize interconnected nonlinear systems, to solve system inversion and tracking problems, and to design predictive and adaptive controllers.

Distributed parameter systems exhibit spatial dependence along with temporal dependence. Such systems are typically represented in terms of partial differential equations. In control theory, there appears to be no existing method for representing the input-output map of a distributed system via a Chen-Fliess …

Physics-Guided Deep Learning For Predictive Modeling Of Spatiotemporal Dynamical Systems, Niharika Deshpande Aug 2026

Physics-Guided Deep Learning For Predictive Modeling Of Spatiotemporal Dynamical Systems, Niharika Deshpande

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Many physical and networked systems evolve under continuously changing spatial and temporal conditions. Transportation networks respond to fluctuating demand, atmospheric fields reorganize as storms intensify, and coastal response depends on localized forcing pathways. Modeling such systems requires learning formulations that adapt to evolving structure, operate on irregular geometries, and provide interpretable measures of predictive uncertainty. This dissertation develops a physics-guided spatiotemporal learning framework designed for structured dynamical systems whose governing interactions are neither static nor Euclidean. The central premise is that spatial relationships in these systems are dynamic and geometry-dependent. To represent this behavior, system states are modeled on time-varying …

Computational And Ai Tools For Understanding Telomere-Associated Cancer Mechanisms, Eleni Adam Aug 2026

Computational And Ai Tools For Understanding Telomere-Associated Cancer Mechanisms, Eleni Adam

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Telomeres are the protective caps of the human chromosomes and are critical for genome stability. Dysfunctional telomeres caused by their erosion with age and cell proliferation as well as by defects in their maintenance is a major early event leading to genome changes and cancer. Subtelomeres possess the critical role of regulating adjacent telomeres. Due to their complex repeat structure and high variance from one person to another, these areas have not been analyzed in detail. We present a set of computational and machine learning tools to aid in the understanding of subtelomere structure and its rearrangements in cancer.

Initially, …

Modeling And Generating Crash Avoidance Behaviors In Safety-Critical Vehicle–Pedestrian Interactions Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Qingwen Pu Aug 2026

Modeling And Generating Crash Avoidance Behaviors In Safety-Critical Vehicle–Pedestrian Interactions Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Qingwen Pu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Traffic crashes between vehicles and pedestrians arise from complex, split-second interactions in which both parties make rapid evasive decisions. Four fundamental gaps persist in existing research. Surrogate safety measures assume linear trajectories, failing to capture the curved movements of turning vehicles and crossing pedestrians at intersections. Single-agent modeling treats one party as a fixed obstacle, ignoring the joint decision-making that governs near-miss outcomes. The effect of vehicle type on pedestrian avoidance behavior—whether pedestrians respond differently to automated vehicles (AVs) than to human-driven vehicles (HDVs)—remains poorly understood. Finally, automated driving system development is hampered by a severe scarcity of large-scale, behaviorally …

Predicting Student Belonging In Computing Education: A Multimodal Machine Learning Approach Using Eeg And Survey Data, Hannah Moshtaghi Aug 2026

Predicting Student Belonging In Computing Education: A Multimodal Machine Learning Approach Using Eeg And Survey Data, Hannah Moshtaghi

Master's Theses

Measuring students’ sense of belonging, characterized by feelings of acceptance, inclusion, and encouragement from teachers, remains a significant challenge in computing education. Prior research has associated this multidimensional construct with positive academic outcomes and has identified instructors’ growth- and fixed-mindset messaging as a potential influence. However, belonging is a complex and deeply personal experience that is difficult to capture through direct observation alone. Current measurement methods rely on self-report surveys, which may not capture every aspect of an experience that can also involve emotional and cognitive responses.

This thesis investigates whether combining EEG data recorded during a belonging questionnaire with …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Quantum Dots And Gold Nanoparticles For Norovirus Biosensing Applications In Water Systems, Breanne Evans Aug 2026

Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Quantum Dots And Gold Nanoparticles For Norovirus Biosensing Applications In Water Systems, Breanne Evans

Master's Theses

Rapid, reliable detection of viral pathogens remains a significant challenge across water-treatment and environmental monitoring systems, including drinking-water, wastewater, water reuse, and environmental surveillance applications. Waterborne viral contamination can pose substantial public-health risks, making early detection essential for protecting water quality and responding quickly to treatment failures or contamination events. Direct potable reuse (DPR) is one particularly demanding example because it requires continuous verification of treatment performance and the broader need for rapid virus monitoring extends across many water-treatment and environmental surveillance applications. Norovirus is a priority target because of its widespread occurrence in wastewater, environmental persistence, and exceptionally low …

The Aggregation Of Microplastics By Enhancing Extracellular Polymeric Substance Production In Pseudoalteromonas Sp. Ncimb 2021 To Improve Removal Efficiencies In Environmental Matrices, Janelle L. Mercer Aug 2026

The Aggregation Of Microplastics By Enhancing Extracellular Polymeric Substance Production In Pseudoalteromonas Sp. Ncimb 2021 To Improve Removal Efficiencies In Environmental Matrices, Janelle L. Mercer

All Theses

Microplastics (MP) are ubiquitous in the natural environment and are a growing threat due to their small size and durability. Plastics are released into the environment through improper waste management, wastewater treatment outfalls, industrial spills, agricultural runoff, and landfills. These particles breakdown into secondary MP through degradation pathways. MP, less than 5 mm, require intricate removal techniques from water systems. Filtration techniques, though viable and effective, have implementation constraints due to high cost, maintenance demands, and filter fouling. By integrating coagulation and flocculation processes prior to filtration, MP removal efficiencies can increase, while minimizing operational challenges during filtration. Extracellular polymeric …

Theory-Informed Generative Agents For Human Behavioral Modeling In Disasters, Liming Lu Aug 2026

Theory-Informed Generative Agents For Human Behavioral Modeling In Disasters, Liming Lu

All Dissertations

This dissertation develops a theory-informed generative-agent framework for modeling human behavioral decisions in disasters. Existing flood and disaster preparedness models often emphasize physical hazards, infrastructure exposure, or statistical correlations, but they struggle to capture the heterogeneous and evolving choices households make. This limitation is especially important for climate-related hazards, where future damage depends not only on changes in rainfall, inundation, and urban development, but also on decentralized protective actions such as house elevation, flood insurance, evacuation, and early preparedness. The dissertation integrates two empirical studies: a flood-risk study in Charleston, South Carolina, and a household disaster-preparedness study across hurricane contexts. …

Leveraging Deep Learning Recurrence And Attention Mechanisms For Flood Forecasting And Assessment, Elnaz Heidari Aug 2026

Leveraging Deep Learning Recurrence And Attention Mechanisms For Flood Forecasting And Assessment, Elnaz Heidari

All Dissertations

Predicting how much water will flow in rivers and streams is important for managing floods, water supply, and the environment. Traditionally, government agencies have used complex models, such as the National Water Model (NWM), which simulate how much water moves through landscapes using physical laws and real-world data. However, recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled new ways to make these predictions. This research explored whether AI-based models could predict river discharge more accurately. These AI models learn patterns from past data instead of relying only on physical rules. To find out how well they work, the AI models …

Can Kinematics Specify Tool Use Affordances?, Tyler Duffrin Aug 2026

Can Kinematics Specify Tool Use Affordances?, Tyler Duffrin

All Dissertations

Object properties such as length, shape, and heaviness, as well as affordance-based properties such as strike-with-ability and poke-with-ability, can be perceived via dynamic touch as functions of inertia tensor invariants. The primary question addressed here was whether people can perceive these same power and precision properties for purely virtual objects, which lack dynamic physical forces. The Kinematic Specification of Dynamics (KSD) principle asserts that missing dynamics are lawfully specified by kinematic (visual) motion patterns, such that kinematic information alone may support successful interactions with virtual objects. In three experiments, we investigated (1) whether virtual reality (VR) users could calibrate to …

Evaluation Of Dredged Sediments As A Partial Replacement For Fine Aggregate In Mortar And Concrete, Ashish Gautam

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

The feasibility of using dredged sediment from the Mobile River as a partial replacement for fine aggregate in mortar and concrete was investigated through a series of laboratory characterization and performance evaluation. Three dredged sediment samples (A, B and C) were initially examined, and Sample A was selected for further evaluation due to its closer resemblance to natural fine aggregate. This sample exhibited lower moisture content, higher sand equivalent values, higher specific gravity, and lower absorption. Mortar mixtures with 0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 and 100% dredged sediment replacement showed decreasing workability as the replacement level increased. The 20% …

Atomic-Scale Investigation Of Functional Molecular Systems And Graphene Nanoribbons Using Scanning Probe Microscopy, A.M. Shashika D. Wijerathna

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Emerging molecular electronics, molecular devices, and carbon-based nanotechnologies increasingly rely on the precise control of molecular structures and interfaces at the atomic scale. Advancing these systems requires experimental techniques capable of resolving atomic structures, quantifying molecular behavior, and revealing the mechanisms governing nanoscale assembly. Scanning probe microscopy uniquely provides these capabilities by combining atomic-resolution imaging with local spectroscopy and manipulation. This dissertation employs ultra-high-vacuum low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM) and qPlus atomic force microscopy (qPlus AFM) to address three complementary challenges: (i) atomic-scale characterization of complex supramolecular architectures, (ii) quantitative investigation of mechanically induced conformational switching of individual molecules, and …

Towards More Realistic And Practical Graph Backdoor Attacks, Jiawei Chen Aug 2026

Towards More Realistic And Practical Graph Backdoor Attacks, Jiawei Chen

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have demonstrated remarkable performance on graph-based learning tasks and are increasingly deployed in security-critical applications. However, recent studies have shown that they are highly vulnerable to graph backdoor attacks (GBAs), where adversaries implant malicious triggers to induce targeted misclassification during inference. Despite their effectiveness, existing GBAs are often developed under unrealistic assumptions, such as focusing exclusively on simple homogeneous graphs or assuming the adversary possesses privileged access to target nodes during inference. This dissertation aims to systematically investigate and design graph backdoor attacks under significantly more realistic graph settings and adversarial constraints.

First, we investigate the …

Practical On-Device Intelligence For Resource-Constrained Embedded And Wearable Devices, Xiao Ma Aug 2026

Practical On-Device Intelligence For Resource-Constrained Embedded And Wearable Devices, Xiao Ma

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Embedded and wearable devices increasingly rely on deep neural networks to support intelligent sensing applications directly on the device. However, building practical on-device intelligence remains challenging throughout the deployment lifecycle. Before deployment, models must remain accurate despite severe memory, computation, and energy budgets, and a single device often needs to support multiple sensing applications without deploying a separate model for each application. After deployment, the device continues to operate in changing real-world environments, where shifts in data distribution can degrade the model’s performance over time, so the model must be able to adapt to such shifts efficiently.

The first challenge …

Macroscopic Classical And Quantum Models Of Inverse Compton Scattering, Emerson Penn Rogers Aug 2026

Macroscopic Classical And Quantum Models Of Inverse Compton Scattering, Emerson Penn Rogers

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Inverse Compton sources — in which a relativistic electron beam scatters a laser pulse to produce tunable, collimated, high-energy radiation—have emerged as among the most promising compact radiation sources, with applications ranging from nuclear photonics to medical and nanoscale imaging and metrology. The most viable current tabletop configuration couples laser-wakefield acceleration with inverse Compton scattering, producing GeV-scale electron beams over millimeter distances. As laser intensities increase and electron energies grow, the interaction enters the radiation reaction regime, where the energy radiated by the electron becomes a significant fraction of its kinetic energy. Predicting the scattered electron energy spectrum — the …

Understanding The Correlation Between Prediction Performance And Trust In Ai Through Scenario-Based Tasks, Likhitha Kammara Aug 2026

Understanding The Correlation Between Prediction Performance And Trust In Ai Through Scenario-Based Tasks, Likhitha Kammara

Theses and Dissertations

Trust in artificial intelligence is commonly assessed through self-reported scales or behavioral reliance, yet behavioral reliance is retrospective and can only be observed after a decision has already been made. This thesis examines whether prediction accuracy — a user's ability to predict what an AI system will recommend before its output is revealed — can serve as a prospective correlate of trust in the same empirical sense as behavioral reliance. The study was conducted in two phases using scenario-based AI decision tasks across disaster response, healthcare, and infrastructure restoration contexts, employing a between-group design in which participants either predicted AI …

Nanostructured Negative Electron Affinity Gallium Arsenide Photocathodes With Enhanced Quantum Efficiency And Extended Charge Lifetime For Advanced Photoinjectors, Md Aziz Ar Rahman

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents a comprehensive experimental and computational investigation of nanostructured negative electron affinity (NEA) gallium arsenide (GaAs) photocathodes. This work was undertaken to achieve higher quantum efficiency (QE) and longer charge lifetime than conventional flat NEA GaAs electron sources commonly used in photoinjectors. Finite-Difference Time-Domain and charge-transport simulations of three types of nanostructure geometries reveal substantial QE enhancement over flat GaAs via Mie resonance mode excitation. Consequently, the truncated nanocone array (TNCA) photocathodes with heights of 400, 700, and 1000 nm were fabricated and NEA activated via Cs-NF₃ deposition. In a low-voltage ultra-high vacuum chamber with a base pressure …

The generation of repeatable and stable nanosecond pulsed atmospheric pressure plasmas is important to non-thermal plasma applications in various fields including medicine, material processing, food processing, and plasma ignition for combustion. This dissertation investigates the atmospheric pressure plasma initiation and formation under 10 – 200 ns pulsed power for electrode configurations applicable for transient plasma ignition (TPI) for combustion. The impacts of pulsed power parameters, gas condition, and electrode geometry on the discharge initiation and modes (i.e., streamer, transient spark and spark) are systematically evaluated for applying TPI for combustion. We evaluated the discharge modes driven by both longer and …

Unsupervised Learning For Minimum Error Adaptive Sampling Of Atmospheric Vertical Temperature Profiles, Alejandro Medina Aug 2026

Unsupervised Learning For Minimum Error Adaptive Sampling Of Atmospheric Vertical Temperature Profiles, Alejandro Medina

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) collect atmospheric data on fixed schedules, and endurance limits make blind searching costly. This thesis develops an unsupervised representation that summarizes a multi-decade radiosonde archive into a compact library of atmospheric states, giving a UAS an expectation of the column before it flies. The method standardizes both axes of a profile against the sounding's own surface conditions, which makes the representation independent of season and of station elevation. Applied to 27,270 soundings from Norman, Oklahoma, over the lowest 1.5 km of the atmosphere, 12 representative profiles reconstruct the record to within 1.0 °C of mean absolute …

From Screening To Risk: Assessment Of Potentially Toxic Elements In Children's Toys Along The El Paso, Tx, U.S.A.-Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mex Border Region, Jesus Rodriguez-Loya Aug 2026

From Screening To Risk: Assessment Of Potentially Toxic Elements In Children's Toys Along The El Paso, Tx, U.S.A.-Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mex Border Region, Jesus Rodriguez-Loya

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Children are uniquely vulnerable to potentially toxic elements (PTEs), absorbing them more readily than adults and encountering them through the hand-to-mouth behaviors of early childhood. Exposure carries element-specific consequences: lead (Pb) impairs cognitive development with no established safe threshold; cadmium (Cd) damages the kidneys and reduces bone mineralization; arsenic (As) is a recognized carcinogen and developmental neurotoxicant; hexavalent chromium (Cr) is carcinogenic and induces allergic dermatitis; nickel (Ni) is the leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis in children; and excess zinc (Zn) disrupts copper absorption and causes gastrointestinal distress. Toys are a distinctive source of such exposure, yet none had …
