Joint Feature Selection And Classification For Taxonomic Problems Within Fish Species Complexes, Yixin Chen, Shuqing Huang, Huimin Chen, Henry L. Bart Dec 2009

Joint Feature Selection And Classification For Taxonomic Problems Within Fish Species Complexes, Yixin Chen, Shuqing Huang, Huimin Chen, Henry L. Bart

Huimin Chen

It is estimated that 90% of the world’s species are yet to be discovered and described. The main reason for the slow pace of new species description is that the science of taxonomy can be very laborious. To formally describe a new species, taxonomists have to manually gather and analyze data from large numbers of specimens and identify the smallest subset of external body characters that uniquely diagnose the new species as distinct from all its known relatives. In this paper, we present an automated feature selection and classification scheme using logistic regression with controlled false discovery rate to address …

Impact Of A Large Medical Waste Incinerator On Air Quality, Robert Oleniacz Dec 2009

Impact Of A Large Medical Waste Incinerator On Air Quality, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

In the paper, an assessment of the compliance with air emission limit values and the impact on air quality of one of the largest medical waste incinerators in Poland, with a total capacity of about 300 kg/h (two incineration lines) is presented. The assessment took the results of continuous and periodic measurements of emissions in the plant’s installation over a period of 12 months’ operation into account. For this period, a calculation was performed for the spread of air pollutants emitted by the two operating incineration lines. According to the analysis and calculations, the analysed medical waste incineration plant does …

The Tangled Tale Of Phase Space, David D. Nolte Dec 2009

The Tangled Tale Of Phase Space, David D. Nolte

David D Nolte

(Preview of Chapter 6: Galileo Unbound: Oxford 2018) Phase space has been called one of the most powerful inventions of modern science.  But its historical origins are clouded in a tangle of independent discovery and mis-attributions that persist today.  This Physics Today article unravels the twisted tale of the discovery and the naming of phase space that began with Liouville in 1838, but by no means ended there, culminating in an encyclopedia article of 1911 that had unintended and lasting etymological side effects never intended by its authors.

Effect Of Spontaneous Gas Expansion And Mobilization On The Aqueous-Phase Concentrations Above A Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid Pool., Kevin G. Mumford, James Smith, Sarah E. Dickson Dec 2009

Effect Of Spontaneous Gas Expansion And Mobilization On The Aqueous-Phase Concentrations Above A Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid Pool., Kevin G. Mumford, James Smith, Sarah E. Dickson

Sarah E Dickson

This paper presents a framework to quantify the overall variability of the model estimations of Total Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Total PCBs) concentrations in the Niagara River on the basis of the uncertainty of few model parameters and the natural variability embedded in some of the model input variables. The results of the uncertainty analysis are used to understand the importance of stochastic model components and their effect on the overall reliability of the model output and to evaluate multiple sources of uncertainty that might need to be further studied. The uncertainty analysis is performed using a newly developed point estimate method, …

Diagnosing Intermittent And Persistent Faults Using Static Bayesian Networks, Ole J. Mengshoel, Brian Ricks Dec 2009

Diagnosing Intermittent And Persistent Faults Using Static Bayesian Networks, Ole J. Mengshoel, Brian Ricks

Ole J Mengshoel

Both intermittent and persistent faults may occur in a wide range of systems. We present in this paper the introduction of intermittent fault handling techniques into ProDiagnose, an algorithm that previously only handled persistent faults. We discuss novel algorithmic techniques as well as how our static Bayesian networks help diagnose, in an integrated manner, a range of intermittent and persistent faults. Through experiments with data from the ADAPT electrical power system test bed, generated as part of the Second International Diagnostic Competition (DXC-10), we show that this novel variant of ProDiagnose diagnoses intermittent faults accurately and quickly, while maintaining strong …

Mining And Civilization, An Illustrated History, Fathi Habashi Dec 2009

Mining And Civilization, An Illustrated History, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Mining and Civilization has been conceived to compliment the author's two books History of Metallurgy and Readings in Historical Metallurgy and to fill a gap in the literature. It is difficult to study the history of metallurgy without studying the history of mining at the same time. Each time the author visits ancient ruins or examines an ancient stone statue he recalls the work of miners who brought the material from a quarry so that the sculptor can create a work of art. History of mining, quarrying, and stone carving is history of civilization.
