© 2020 Acta Materialia Inc. Electron diffraction coupled with aberration-corrected (AC) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is used to image, identify and confirm the structure producing double diffracted spots seen in electron diffraction patterns in twinned high-carbon steels. The experimental and simulated data show that regions comprising: (i) overlaps between a twin and the matrix or, (ii) overlapping twins, create projected structures that are similar to the ω phase observed in other metastable bcc systems. Thus, AC STEM is proficient in the definitive identification of twins in bcc high carbon steels or nanoscale phases in metastable bcc systems.

Hydrogenation is an effective approach to improve the performance of photocatalysts within defect engineering methods. The mechanism of hydrogenation and synergetic effects between hydrogen atoms and local electronic structures, however, remain unclear due to the limits of available photocatalytic systems and technical barriers to observation and measurement. Here, we utilize oxygen vacancies as residential sites to host hydrogen atoms in a layered bismuth oxychloride material containing defects. It is confirmed theoretically and experimentally that the hydrogen atoms interact with the vacancies and surrounding atoms, which promotes the separati30on and transfer processes of photo-generated carriers via the resulting band structure. The …

Nodal Ring Spin Gapless Semiconductor: New Member Of Spintronic Materials, Tie Yang, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaotian Wang, Xiaolin Wang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Both spin gapless semiconductors (SGSs) and nodal ring states (NRSs) have aroused great scientific interest in recent years due to their unique electronic properties and high application potential. However, since their advent, all SGSs and NRSs have been predicted in independent materials. In this work, we proposed a novel type of material, nodal ring spin gapless semiconductor (NRSGS), which combines both states of the SGSs and NRSs. The synthesized material Mg2VO4 is selected as a potential candidate. Detailed band structure analysis reveals that there are gapless crossings in the spin-up direction, which are from multiple topological nodal rings located exactly …

Urea (CO(NH2)2) is conventionally synthesized through two consecutive industrial processes, N2 + H2 → NH3 followed by NH3 + CO2 → urea. Both reactions operate under harsh conditions and consume more than 2% of the world’s energy. Urea synthesis consumes approximately 80% of the NH3 produced globally. Here we directly coupled N2 and CO2 in H2O to produce urea under ambient conditions. The process was carried out using an …

The ultrafast electron transport is central to the requirement of all-electrically controlled spintronics in metallic collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn2Au thin films within the terahertz (THz) range. Here we use the THz time-domain spectroscopy to measure the conductivity spectra of Mn2Au thin films with different thicknesses and temperatures. We demonstrate an onset of carrier localization in Mn2Au with decreasing the film thickness from 15 to 5 nm. By using optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy, we found the surface trapping states in the thinnest Mn2Au film limit its photoconductivity significantly. The DC conductivity and scattering time become larger and longer with decreasing temperature …

© 2020, Tsinghua University Press and Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. Ti-based anode materials in sodium ion batteries have attracted extensive interests due to its abundant resources, low toxicity, easy synthesis and long cycle life. However, low Coulombic efficiency and limited specific capacity affect their applications. Here, cubic-phase TiP2O7 is examined as anode materials, using in-situ/ex-situ characterization techniques. It is concluded that the redox reactions of Ti4+/Ti3+ and Ti3+/Ti0 consecutively occur during the discharge/charge processes, both of which are highly reversible. These reactions make the specific capacity of TiP2O7 even higher than the case of TiO2 that only …

Photocarrier recombination remains a big barrier for the improvement of solar energy conversion efficiency. For 2D materials, construction of heterostructures represents an efficient strategy to promote photoexcited carrier separation via an internal electric field at the heterointerface. However, due to the difficulty in seeking two components with suitable crystal lattice mismatch, most of the current 2D heterostructures are vertical heterostructures and the exploration of 2D lateral heterostructures is scarce and limited. Here, lateral epitaxial heterostructures of BiOCl @ Bi2O3 at the atomic level are fabricated via sonicating-assisted etching of Cl in BiOCl. This unique lateral heterostructure expedites …

KGaA, Weinheim A new electrochemical energy storage device, comprising a faradaic rechargeable pseudo-capacitor type electrode with a non-faradaic rechargeable capacitor electrode, is successfully developed for potential applications in smart electric grids. Mapping new electrodes possessing both high energy and power densities as well as long cycle life is vital for the sustainable energy management. In this work, we present a new approach to design electrodes, fabricated from sustainable resources by hybridizing calcined eggshell capacitor anode with a mixed binary metal oxide pseudo-capacitor cathode. Calcium carbonate (calcite), obtained from the biowaste-derived eggshell, is an effective …

2020, The Author(s). Iron-based Prussian blue analogs are promising low-cost and easily prepared cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Their materials quality and electrochemical performance are heavily reliant on the precipitation process. Here we report a controllable precipitation method to synthesize high-performance Prussian blue for sodium-ion storage. Characterization of the nucleation and evolution processes of the highly crystalline Prussian blue microcubes reveals a rhombohedral structure that exhibits high initial Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate performance, and cycling properties. The phase transitions in the as-obtained material are investigated by synchrotron in situ powder X-ray diffraction, which shows highly reversible structural transformations between rhombohedral, …

© 2020 Light soaking (LS) effect on porphyrin (GD2) dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using well-ordered TiO2 nanotube (TNT) photoanodes was studied with different lengths of TNTs and LS treatment time. The TNT array possessing longer length and larger tube diameter had improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) property by generating larger photocurrent, and besides provided a larger surface area to yield more dye loading. The LS effect on GD2-applied DSSCs using TNT photoanodes was triggered off in the first 5 min of the LS treatment, and gradually increased during 60 min LS treatment. The improved PEC property and dye loading by longer TNT …
