Transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) is one of the most important tasks in the field of power systems, especially in deregulated power system environments. TNEP is a nonlinear mixed integer programming problem that can be solved via hybrid heuristic algorithms. This paper presents a modified scatter search algorithm (MSSA) to reinforce the ordinary scatter search algorithm (SSA) to be equipped for handling large scale transmission expansion planning (TEP) problems. The proposed methodology is based on the SSA, incorporating some improved strategies so as to decrease the number of linear programming problems required to be solved iteratively. In this study, it …

Energy Savings In Simultaneous Multi-Threaded Processors Through Dynamic Resizing Of Datapath Resources, Gürhan Küçük, Mi̇ne Mesta
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Nowadays, all the designers of systems from high-performance servers to battery-operated handheld devices aim for reliability, high-performance and longevity. Central within these aims the issue of processor power consumption is becoming increasingly important. In this study, we aim to adapt our already-proven method for single-threaded superscalar processors to simultaneous multi-threaded (SMT) processors for energy savings. The original method focused on resizing datapath resources according to the demands of running applications. To achieve this, the targeted resources are physically divided into multiple partitions, and turned on and off according to the needs of the applications. Since, the energy consumption of the …

Load Sharing Based On Moving Roles In Multiagent Systems, Şebnem Bora, Ali̇ Murat Ti̇ryaki̇, Oğuz Di̇kenelli̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we present a load-sharing approach based on the refactoring of agents. According to our approach, the role(s) that makes an agent overloaded is identified and transferred to less loaded agents. The excess workload of this heavily loaded agent is then transferred to the new agent. This approach defines a new agent, called the ``monitor agent,'' which monitors the workload of agents in the organization and decides about the refactoring of the agents. The monitor agent uses the platform ontology, which explicitly describes the components of the agent organization, including agents and their roles, plans, and workloads. This …
A New Multipath Channel Transformation Technique, Tuğrul Çavdar
A New Multipath Channel Transformation Technique, Tuğrul Çavdar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A new channel transformation technique is introduced in this paper The technique is employed on the receiver side and has 2 filters. The first filter is the inverse complex conjugate of the estimated channel. The profile of this filter's output is triangular. The taps of the second filter are calculated according to the output of the first filter to produce an exponentially decreasing profile. This technique transforms most channel profiles to exponentially decreasing channel profiles. Thus equalizers adopting the proposed technique may have better bit error rates and lower computational complexity on frequency-selective channels. This paper evaluates the efficiency of …

Neutral Current Wave Shape Analysis Using Wavelet For Diagnosis Of Winding Insulation Of A Transformer, Patthi Sridhar, Birendra Prasad Singh, Pulapa Venkata Kanaka Rao
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Insulation failure within the windings of a power transformer arises due to over voltages, under voltages, notches, glitches, etc. A widely used technique to detect these power transformer insulation failures during an impulse test is the comparison of neutral current waveforms. Any shift in the recorded waveforms between reduced and full voltage confirms the existence of a fault in the windings. Hence, a proper analysis of neutral current waveforms is necessary to assess the condition of the insulation of power transformer winding. In order to carry out a wave shape analysis, a 61 MVA, 11.5/230 kV generator transformer is used …
Finite Element Modeling Of A Superconducting Fault Current Limiter, Lale Ergene, J. Keith Nelson, Raghunath Parthasarathi
Finite Element Modeling Of A Superconducting Fault Current Limiter, Lale Ergene, J. Keith Nelson, Raghunath Parthasarathi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper summarizes the work done to show finite element modeling results on a high temperature superconductor fault current limiter (FCL). The paper also gives the small mock-up design of the matrix FCL and its finite element model (FEM). It also discusses the limitations of the FEM and explains how the results from the FEM compare with the experimental data derived for the configuration. A 3-dimensional FEM has been used because of the structure of the real geometry, which does not show any plane or axisymmetric features.

Voltage Stability Via Energy Function Analysis On Reduced Order Model Of Power System, Ahmet Çi̇fci̇, Yilmaz Uyaroğlu, Mehmet Ali̇ Yalçin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A power system is a typical nonlinear dynamical system and voltage stability is an important subject of power system stability. This paper describes the use of the variable gradient method in a reduced order model of a single-machine infinite-bus power system. Additionally, the system's Lyapunov (energy) function is created and thus the system's energy level changes' effects on the system's stability are shown using the MACSYMA program. The Lyapunov function allows the determination of stability for nonlinear systems without the need to find exact solutions.

A Novel Approach For Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generations Based On Static Voltage Stability Margin, Mohsen Rezaie Estabragh, Mohsen Mohammadian, Mehdi Shafiee
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a newly developed approach to find the optimal location of distributed generations (DGs) to improve power system voltage stability margin and reduce losses incorporating the constraints. The loadability limit index is used to assess the static voltage stability security margin, which is associated with the point of voltage collapse limit. Based on this, a toolbox is developed to recognize the loadability margin in power networks. Finally, the mentioned problem is modeled as a nonlinear and multiobjective optimization problem. The proposed method establishes a tradeoff between the security index and power losses in DG placement using the hybrid …
Application Of The Posicast Control Method To Static Shunt Compensators, Amir Ghorbani, Siamak Masoudi, Arash Shabani
Application Of The Posicast Control Method To Static Shunt Compensators, Amir Ghorbani, Siamak Masoudi, Arash Shabani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the Posicast control method is used for decreasing the reactive power oscillations of static shunt compensators. Shunt compensators such as the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static VAR compensator (SVC) are considered to be FACTS devices. The applied control method decreases the amount of oscillations in the outputs of STATCOM and SVC considerably, with fast damping. In this paper, a PI controller is added to the model to decrease the sensitivity of the Posicast controller to the parameter variations and plant model mismatch. Simplicity and applicability are the main features of this controller. The model is simulated …

Symbolic Regression Of Crop Pest Forecasting Using Genetic Programming, Basim Alhadidi, Alaa Alafeef, Heba Al-Hiari
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we propose and evaluate a mathematical model that describes the reported data on crop pests to get an accurate prediction of production costs, food safety, and the protection of the environment. Meteorological factors are not the only things that affect a bumper harvest; it is also affected by crop plant diseases and insect pests. Studies show that relying solely on the naked-eye observations of experts to forecast well-planned agriculture is not always sufficient to achieve effective control. Providing fast, automatic, cheap, and accurate artificial intelligence-based solutions for that task can be of great realistic significance. The proposed …
