Design And Analysis Of Ei Core Structured Transverse Flux Linear Reluctance Actuator, Ahmet Fenerci̇oğlu, Yusuf Avşar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, an EI core linear actuator is proposed for horizontal movement systems. It is a transverse flux linear switched reluctance motor designed with an EI core structure geometrically. The actuator is configured into three phases and at a 6/4 pole ratio, and it has a stationary active stator along with a sliding passive translator. The stator consists of E cores and the translator consists of I cores. The actuator has a yokeless design because the stator and translator have no back iron. The E and I cores are separated from each other to provide a fault-tolerant design and …

A Fourth-Order Accurate Compact 2-D Fdfd Method For Waveguide Problems, Lokman Kuzu Jan 2015

A Fourth-Order Accurate Compact 2-D Fdfd Method For Waveguide Problems, Lokman Kuzu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, a fourth-order accurate 2-D finite difference frequency domain method is proposed for the analysis of general waveguide structures. Finite difference techniques have been extensively used to solve electromagnetic problems over the decades. These methods discretize the computational domain using the Yee cell, but the standard Yee scheme used in these methods is only second-order accurate. In order to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme compared to the multiresolution frequency domain method and the traditional 2-D finite difference frequency domain scheme, the dispersion characteristics of various waveguide structures are analyzed.

Load Management In A Distributed Multimedia Streaming Environment Using A Fault-Tolerant Hierarchical System, Hadi̇ Işik Aybay, Mohammad Ahmed Shah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In contrast to text-only forms of communications, multimedia uses a combination of audiovisual means alongside textual modes of communication. Streaming multimedia is such multimedia that is constantly delivered by a provider of the multimedia to a client. In streaming multimedia the streamed content is continually presented to and received by the end user. Distributed multimedia systems (DMSs) deliver multimedia content to end-users by means of distributed multimedia databases and distributed information servers. These DMSs are designed to deliver multimedia content over a network. A fault-tolerant redundant hierarchy (Red-HI)-based load management policy for a distributed multimedia streaming system is proposed in …

Solution Of Tio$_{2}$ Memristor-Capacitor Series Circuit Excited By A Constant Voltage Source And Its Application To Calculate Operation Frequency Of A Programmable Tio$_{2}$ Memristor-Capacitor Relaxation Oscillator, Reşat Mutlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The memristor is a new-found circuit element and its applications in programmable circuits are also under study. Analysis of most of its combinations with other circuit elements such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors does not exist. In this work, a TiO$_{2}$ memristor model with linear dopant drift speed is used and the solution of a TiO$_{2}$ memristor and capacitor series circuit driven by a constant voltage source is given. It is then used to analyze a novel M-C oscillator circuit. In previous programmable oscillator studies, the memristance of the oscillator was assumed to be constant. However, in this study, the …

3d Imaging For Ground-Penetrating Radars Via Dictionarydimension Reduction, Muhammed Duman, Ali̇ Cafer Gürbüz Jan 2015

3d Imaging For Ground-Penetrating Radars Via Dictionarydimension Reduction, Muhammed Duman, Ali̇ Cafer Gürbüz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been widely used in detecting or imaging subsurface targets. In many applications such as archaeology, utility imaging, or landmine detection, three-dimensional (3D) images of the subsurface region is required for better understanding of the sensed medium. However, a high-resolution 3D image requires wideband data collection both in spatial and time/frequency domains. Match filtering is the main tool for generating subsurface images. Applying match filtering with the data acquisition impulse response for each possible voxel in the 3D region with the collected data requires both a tremendous amount of computer memory and computational complexity. Hence, it is …

A New Approach To The Development Of A Nonlinear Model For Micro-Pelton Turbines, Mahmut Temel Özdemi̇r, Ahmet Orhan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a new approach that is closer to the real turbine without abandoning the advantages of nonlinear modeling simplicity compromising the simplicity of the nonlinear model is proposed. The purpose of the study is to contribute to making theoretical studies of microhydroelectric power plants (MHPPs) more realistic. Studies on their control, especially frequency control, have increased with the expansion of grid-connected power plants. However, some problems have occurred when converting simulation studies of the frequency control to practical studies. The reasons for these problems are that the systems cannot be modeled completely. In this study, first, the nonlinear …

Prescient: A Predictive Channel Access Schemefor Ieee 802.15.4-Compliant Devices Considering Ieee 802.11 Coexistence, Tolga Çöplü, Sema Fatma Oktuğ

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Coexistence is among the most significant challenges for IEEE 802.15.4-compliant devices in indoor environments. Previous works have shown that IEEE 802.11-compliant devices are the major sources of interference in the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical band. In order to overcome the coexistence problem, IEEE 802.15.4-compliant devices should monitor the communication channel and access the channel when it is not in use. In this study, the impact of IEEE 802.11 traffic on IEEE 802.15.4 communication is analyzed and a novel predictive channel access scheme, PRESCIENT (PREdictive channel access SCheme for IEee 802.15.4-compliaNT devices), is proposed. The performance evaluation of the …

A New Bitwise Voting Strategy For Safety-Critical Systems With Binary Decisions, Mustafa Seçki̇n Durmuş, Oytun Eri̇ş, Uğur Yildirim, Mehmet Turan Söylemez

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The main issue in controlling safety-critical systems such as nuclear power reactors or railway interlocking systems is to provide high safety and reliability where the risk ratio is at the highest level because small errors might result in hazardous accidents (e.g., death or injury of many people). The N-version programming technique, where N-different modules run in parallel, can be used to improve the reliability and safety of such systems at the desired safety level. Decisions of N-different modules are then evaluated by another component, usually known as the voter, using different voting strategies. In the current study a bitwise voting …

Variable Charge/Discharge Time-Interval Control Strategy Of Bess For Wind Power Dispatch, Wei Chai, Zheng Li, Xu Cai

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A variable charge/discharge time-interval ($T_{C/D})$ control strategy of a battery energy storage system (BESS) for wind power dispatch is proposed in this paper, aiming at: 1) extending the BESS life, 2) reducing the total BESS energy loss, and 3) increasing the dispatch tracking accuracy. A multifactor life model of a large-scale BESS containing four factors, charge/discharge rate, times, $T_{C/D}$, and temperature, is developed, which has taken into account the cell series/parallel effects and BESS operational characteristics. A comprehensive evaluation system including BESS aging level (BAL), energy loss index (ELI), and tracking inaccuracy index (TII) is proposed, and the relationships between …

Group Control And Identification Of Residential Appliances Using A Nonintrusive Method, Sunil Semwal, Munendra Singh, Rai Sachindra Prasad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Identifying and controlling (ON/OFF) electrical appliance(s) from a remote location is an essential part of energy management. This motivated us to design a system that can collect the aggregate load signature from a single point, obtain the features, and finally identify the ON state of electrical appliance(s). The proposed disaggregation technique can be divided into two modules: the first part proposes an electrical installation system to disaggregate the appliance at the circuit level, whereas the second part consists of feature selection, dimension reduction, and classification algorithms. Load signatures of electrical appliances were combined with white Gaussian noise to analyze how …

Speech Emotion Recognition Using Nonlinear Dynamics Features, Ali Shahzadi, Alireza Ahmadyfard, Ali Harimi, Khashayar Yaghmaie

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Recent developments in man--machine interaction have motivated researchers to recognize human emotion from speech signals. In this study, we propose using nonlinear dynamics features (NLDs) for emotion recognition. NLDs are extracted from the geometrical properties of the reconstructed phase space of speech signals. The traditional prosodic and spectral features are also used as a benchmark. The Fisher discriminant ratio acts as a filter to remove irrelevant features quickly. Then a wrapper method based on a genetic algorithm and support vector machine is employed to find the best feature subset that obtains the maximum recognition rate. The classification accuracy of the …

Ga Based Adaptive Receiver For Mc-Cdma System, Muhammad Adnan Khan, Muhammad Umair, Muhammad Aamer Saleem Choudhry Jan 2015

Ga Based Adaptive Receiver For Mc-Cdma System, Muhammad Adnan Khan, Muhammad Umair, Muhammad Aamer Saleem Choudhry

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Multicarrier systems like the multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems are designed for maximum usability of available bandwidth. We use the MC-CDMA system with Alamouti's space time coding in this paper. We propose the genetic algorithm (GA) in order to calculate MC-CDMA receiver weights with two variation schemes. The proposed schemes reduce receiver complexity. The bit error rate and convergence rate are also improved by increasing the number of genes and chromosomes of the GA in both schemes as compared with conventional LMS based receivers of the MC-CDMA system. This is verified via simulations.
