Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate inhibition of linear absorption for phase and group velocity mismatched second- and third-harmonic generation in strongly absorbing materials, GaAs, in particular, at frequencies above the absorption edge.

A 100-fs pump pulse tuned to 1300 nm generates 650 and 435 nm second- and third-harmonic pulses that propagate across a 450−μm-thick GaAs substrate without being absorbed.

We attribute this to a phase-locking mechanism that causes the pump to trap the harmonics and to impress on them its dispersive properties.

A Heuristic Scheduling Scheme In Multiuser Ofdma Networks, Zheng Sun, Zhiqiang He, Ruochen Wang, Kai Niu Aug 2008

A Heuristic Scheduling Scheme In Multiuser Ofdma Networks, Zheng Sun, Zhiqiang He, Ruochen Wang, Kai Niu

Zheng Sun

Conventional heterogeneous-traffic scheduling schemes utilize zero-delay constraint for real-time services, which aims to minimize the average packet delay among real-time users. However, in light or moderate load networks this strategy is unnecessary and leads to low data throughput for non-real-time users. In this paper, we propose a heuristic scheduling scheme to solve this problem. The scheme measures and assigns scheduling priorities to both real-time and non-real-time users, and schedules the radio resources for the two user classes simultaneously. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme efficiently handles the heterogeneous-traffic scheduling with diverse QoS requirements and alleviates the unfairness between real-time …

Using Bayesian Networks For Candidate Generation In Consistency-Based Diagnosis, Sriram Narasimhan, Ole J. Mengshoel Aug 2008

Using Bayesian Networks For Candidate Generation In Consistency-Based Diagnosis, Sriram Narasimhan, Ole J. Mengshoel

Ole J Mengshoel

Consistency-based diagnosis relies on the computation of discrepancies between model predictions and sensor observations. The traditional assumption that these discrepancies can be detected accurately (by means of thresholding for example) is in many cases reasonable and leads to strong performance. However, in situations of substantial uncertainty (due, for example, to sensor noise or model abstraction), more robust schemes need to be designed to make a binary decision on whether predictions are consistent with observations or not. However, if an accurate binary decision is not made, there are risks of occurrence of false alarms and missed alarms. Moreover when multiple sensors …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Microbial fuel cells(MFCs) were constructed by inoculating fresh sedimentary microorganisms.Effect of phenol on performance of MFCs was investigated. The results showed that the generation of electrical current was induced by bacteria attached on the surface of the anode.Presence of phenol reduced the rate of glucose consumption and extended the duration of electricity generation with the same addition of glucose. In addition, the electricity generation by a single strain(belonging to pseudomonas species) separated from the sedimentary MFC was also investigated. The experimental results indicated that the presence of metabolic intermediates which exhibited electrochemical activity was necessary for the electricity production.Analysis of GC-MS showed that the …

Electrocatalytic Performance Of Carbon Supported Au-Ir Catalyst As Cathodic Catalyst In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cell, Wei Chen, Ya-Wen Tang, Tain-Hong Lu Aug 2008

Electrocatalytic Performance Of Carbon Supported Au-Ir Catalyst As Cathodic Catalyst In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cell, Wei Chen, Ya-Wen Tang, Tain-Hong Lu

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper,it is reported for the first time that the electrocatalytic activities of the carbon supported Au(Au/C),carbon supported Ir(Ir/C) and the carbon supported Au-Ir(Au-Ir/C) catalysts prepared in the aqueous solution with tetrahydrofuran(THF) for the oxidation of formic acid and for the oxygen reduction were compared. It was found that all three catalysts showed no electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of formic acid, but the electrocatalytic activity of the Au-Ir/C catalyst for oxygen reduction was much better than those of Au/C and Ir/C.Thus,the Au-Ir/C catalyst is suitable to be used as the cathodic catalyst in Direct formic acid fuel cell(DFAFC).

Computational Studies Of H2, O2, And Co Adsorption On Pt And Pt-Ru Catalyst Clusters For Hydrogen Fuel Cell Applications, Huy Mai, T.J. Dhilip Kumar, P. Tarakeshwar, Naduvalath Balakrishnan

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Previous computational studies of hydrogen fuel cell catalysis primarily focus on single adsorbate and therefore do not reflect the realistic situation. Here we investigated the effect of multiple hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon monoxide adsorption on bimetallic nanoclusters as allowed by computational resources. The criteria of which we studied were adsorption energies, electron densities, electrostatic charges, and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps with respect to each structure. We found that Pt-Ru clusters have better performance than pure Pt clusters early in the adsorption course, and pure Pt clusters are more consistent than Pt-Ru clusters in a sequence of adsorbate introduction.

The Dependence Of Measured Modulation Error Ratio On Phase Noise, Ron D. Katznelson Aug 2008

The Dependence Of Measured Modulation Error Ratio On Phase Noise, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

This paper reviews the algorithms used by Vector Signal Analyzers to measure Modulation Error Ratio (MER) and derives the explicit functional dependence of measured MER on phase noise of digital transmitters. The modulation error model is introduced and the analytical expression for key estimated parameters required to obtain MER measure are derived. The essential elements of algorithms employed by MER measurement instruments to estimate amplitude scale, frequency offset, and initial phase intercept and the resulting MER are identified. The frequency response of the effective phase-noise rejection filtering action associated with a given measurement epoch is derived. It is shown that …

An Open Framework For Highly Concurrent Real-Time Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation, Ryan C. Underwood, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Mariesa Crow

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulation is becoming a significant tool in prototyping complex, highly available systems. The HIL approach permits testing of hardware prototypes of components that would be extremely costly or difficult to test in the deployed environment. In power system simulation, key issues are the ability to wrap the systems of equations (such as Partial Differential Equations) describing the deployed environment into real-time software models, provide low synchronization overhead between the hardware and software, and reduce reliance on proprietary platforms. This paper introduces an open source HIL simulation framework that can be ported to any standard Unix-like system on …

Investigation Of Stun Guns As Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Sources, George H. Baker, Ryan C. Tuttle

George H Baker

Determined malefactors have demonstrated the use of common systems as effective weapons against civilian infrastructures, e.g. commercial jetliners used as kinetic weapons and cell phones used to trigger explosive devices. This undergraduate research project investigated the possibility of using readily available stun gun devices for electro-magnetic interference with or disruption of personal computers. At present, the system effects of high power electromagnetic sources are well recognized by world scientific and military communities. Former CIA Director John Deutch has said that, "the electron is the ultimate precision-guided weapon."1 There has been much research on the deleterious effects of pulsed voltages and …

Investigation Of Stun Guns As Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Sources, George H. Baker, Ryan C. Tuttle

George H Baker

Because the operation and control of most critical infrastructures are highly dependent on electronics, it is important to understand the vulnerability of those electronics to intentional electromagnetic interference (EMI). The possibility of interference using readily available consumer devices is a particular concern. We investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of using compact stun guns to intentionally interfere with electronic systems. Test articles included individual computers and computers networked through a central hub. 60KV and 600KV devices were used in the experiments. Results indicate that stun guns are effective in disabling digital electronic systems.

Report Of The Commission To Assess The Threat To The United States From Emp Attack: Critical National Infrastructures, William R. Graham

George H Baker

The physical and social fabric of the United States is sustained by a system of systems; a complex and dynamic network of interlocking and interdependent infrastructures (“critical national infrastructures”) whose harmonious functioning enables the myriad actions, transactions, and information flow that undergird the orderly conduct of civil society in this country. The vulnerability of these frastructures to threats — deliberate, accidental, and acts of nature — is the focus of greatly heightened concern in the current era, a process accelerated by the events of 9/11 and recent hurricanes, including Katrina and Rita. This report presents the results of the Commission’s …

Poly(Ethylenedioxythiophene) Based Electronic Devices For Sensor Applications, Jie Liu Jul 2008

Poly(Ethylenedioxythiophene) Based Electronic Devices For Sensor Applications, Jie Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Organic electronic devices, based on Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-Poly (styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT-PSS) as the active layer for sensor applications, have been studied. Two sets of sensors have been developed. In one case, sensors consisting of PEDOT-PSS resistors have been realized and demonstrated for soil moisture monitoring. The resistor model for the soil moisture sensor enables the sensor device to be fabricated at low cost and easily tested with a simple structure. Unlike the large dimension device used in Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), the sensors are small and are capable of capturing microscale behavior of moisture in soil which is useful for …

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Research in wireless sensor networks has accelerated rapidly in recent years. The promise of ubiquitous control of the physical environment opens the way for new applications that will redefine the way we live and work. Due to the small size and low cost of sensor devices, visionaries promise smart systems enabled by deployment of massive numbers of sensors working in concert. To date, most of the research effort has concentrated on forming ad hoc networks under centralized control, which is not scalable to massive deployments. This thesis proposes an alternative approach based on models inspired by biological systems and reports …

Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction Studies Of Indium Phosphide (100) And Growth On Indium And Indium Nitride On Silicon (100), Mohamed Abd-Elsattar Hafez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Study of the effects of atomic hydrogen exposure on structure and morphology of semiconductor surfaces is important for fundamental properties and applications. In this dissertation, the electron yield of a hydrogen-cleaned indium phosphide (InP) surface was measured and correlated to the development of the surface morphology, which was monitored by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Atomic hydrogen treatment produced a clean, well-ordered, and (2x4)-reconstructed InP(100) surface. The quantum efficiency, after activation to negative electron affinity, and the secondary electron emission were shown to increase with hydrogen cleaning time. RHEED patterns of low-index InP(100) surface were modified by the …

Material Perturbations To Enhance Performance Of The Theile Half-Width Leaky Mode Antenna, Jason A. Girard Jun 2008

Material Perturbations To Enhance Performance Of The Theile Half-Width Leaky Mode Antenna, Jason A. Girard

Theses and Dissertations

Microstrip traveling-wave antennas, often referred to as leaky-wave antennas, have been shown to radiate when the dominant or fundamental mode is suppressed and the first higher-order mode is excited. One such microstrip variation is the Thiele Half-Width (THW) antenna, which operates from 5.9 - 8.2 GHz for this research. Increasing the bandwidth over which the THW antenna radiates is desired, as is a fundamental understanding of the propagation characteristics over this region. This dissertation seeks to vary or perturb the material and physical properties of the THW antenna, including strip-width variations and modifications of the substrate layer, to achieve these …
