Electrochemical Properties Of Mixed Metal Oxide Coated Titanium Anodes In Seawater, Ting-Yong Wang, Li-Kun Xu, Guang-Zhang Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Mixed metal oxide coated titanium anodes prepared by thermal decomposition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical measurement, while the consumption rate of an anode was also measured in seawater. In order to examine the practical performances of mixed metal oxide_coated anodes, a simulating test on floating dock in seawater has also been carried out. The SEM results indicate that oxide layers exhibited a cracked_mud morphology which endows the anode with good electrocatalytic activity. The electrochemical measurements showed that mixed metal oxide_coated anodes exhibit excellent electrochemical activity and electrochemical stability in seawater. Owing to good corrosion resistance and low …

A Blend Conducting Membranes For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Lei Li, Jun Zhang, Hong Wu, Yu-Xin Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

An attempt was made to modify membranes for direct methanol fuel cells by blending Nafion or polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) from their solutions. The proton conductivity and methanol barrier property as a function of the membrane compositions are discussed. Compared with the Nafion  117 membrane, the PVDF_Nafion blend membranes with 25 wt% of Nafion showed a decrease in the conductivity by about 2 orders of magnitude, and the methanol barrier properties increased about 3 orders of magnitude. If the ratio (σ/P) is adopted to characterize the performance of the membrane, the PVDF_PSSA and PVDF_Nafiion blend …

Glyoxylic acid was produced by electroreduction of oxalic acid in a well designed cooled cathode reactor. The cathodic and anodic electrolytes were super_saturated oxalic acid and hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions separated by a super_acid ion_exchange membrane. The current efficiency and time_space yield of glyoxylic acid were studied under different temperatures of cathode and electrolyte, current densities, materials of cathode. With the cooled cathode reactor, the energy consumption was reduced and higher oxalic acid concentration was available in solution, so that current efficiency was improved. The results indicated that the average time_space yield of glyoxylic acid was about 0.032 kg·dm -3 ·h -1 …

Statistical Properties Of Composite Distortions In Hfc Systems And Their Effects On Digital Channels, Ron D. Katznelson May 2002

Statistical Properties Of Composite Distortions In Hfc Systems And Their Effects On Digital Channels, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

The statistical properties of Composite Triple Beat (CTB) and Composite Second Order (CSO) distortion terms associated with the analog channels carried on Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) are presented. Both simulation and measurement results show that such distortion components falling on individual channels have amplitude Probability Density Function that is nearly Rayleigh distributed (having a Standard Deviation of 5.7 dB). It is shown that both CTB and CSO components have peak envelope power fluctuations that exceed their average (measured) power levels by more than 15 dB. The temporal statistical properties of these distortion components demonstrate peak envelope power fluctuations with characteristic …

Robust Face Representation And Recognition Under Low Resolution And Difficult Lighting Conditions, Mohammad Moinul Islam

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on different aspects of face image analysis for accurate face recognition under low resolution and poor lighting conditions. A novel resolution enhancement technique is proposed for enhancing a low resolution face image into a high resolution image for better visualization and improved feature extraction, especially in a video surveillance environment. This method performs kernel regression and component feature learning in local neighborhood of the face images. It uses directional Fourier phase feature component to adaptively lean the regression kernel based on local covariance to estimate the high resolution image. For each patch in the neighborhood, four directional …

An Analysis Of Mutually Dispersive Brown Symbols For Non-Linear Ambiguity Suppression, Matthew J. Papaphotis

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis significantly advances research towards the implementation of optimal Non-linear Ambiguity Suppression (NLS) waveforms by analyzing the Brown theorem. The Brown theorem is reintroduced with the use of simplified linear algebraic notation. A methodology for Brown symbol design and digitization is provided, and the concept of dispersive gain is introduced. Numerical methods are utilized to design, synthesize, and analyze Brown symbol performance. The theoretical performance in compression and dispersion of Brown symbols is demonstrated and is shown to exhibit significant improvement compared to discrete codes. As a result of this research a process is derived for the design of …

Translation And Rotation Invariant Multiscale Image Registration, Jennifer L. Manfra Mar 2002

Translation And Rotation Invariant Multiscale Image Registration, Jennifer L. Manfra

Theses and Dissertations

The most recent research involved registering images in the presence of translations and rotations using one iteration of the redundant discrete wavelet transform. We extend this work by creating a new multiscale transform to register two images with translation or rotation differences, independent of scale differences between the images. Our two-dimensional multiscale transform uses an innovative combination of lowpass filtering and the continuous wavelet transform to mimic the two-dimensional redundant discrete wavelet transform. This allows us to obtain multiple subbands at various scales while maintaining the desirable properties of the redundant discrete wavelet transform. Whereas the discrete wavelet transform produces …

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen Jan 2002

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

XML is becoming the data exchange standard on the Internet. Previously proposed XML query languages, such as XQuery, Quilt, YALT, Lorel, and XML-QL, lack schema definition of the query result; therefore, they are limited for defining views, integrating data, updating, and further querying, all of which are often needed in e-Business applications. We propose a novel XML query language called CXQuery, which defines the schema of the query results explicitly and can easily define views, and integrate, update, and query XML data. In addition, CXQuery can express spatial and spatio-temporal queries using a constraint-based querying approach.

Effect Of Ga Content On Defect States In Cuin1-XGaXSe2 Photovoltaic Devices, Jennifer T. Heath, J. David Cohen, William N. Shafarman, Dongxiang Liao, Angus Rockett

Faculty Publications

Defects in the band gap of CuIn1-xGaxSe2 have been characterized using transient photocapacitance spectroscopy. The measured spectra clearly show response from a band of defects centered around 0.8 eV from the valence band edge as well as an exponential distribution of band tail states. Despite Ga contents ranging from Ga/(In+Ga)=0.0 to 0.8, the defect bandwidth and its position relative to the valence band remain constant. This defect band may act as an important recombination center, contributing to the decrease in device efficiency with increasing Ga content.

A 0.5 Μm Thick Polysilicon Schottky Diode With Rectification Ratio Of 10^6, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Young J. Song, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Polycrystalline Si films, 0.5-mm thick, were obtained as a result of metal-induced growth by sputtering from a Si target on 25 nm thick Ni prelayers at 525 °C. Silicon grew heteroepitaxially on the NiSi2 layer formed due to the reaction between the sputtered Si atoms and Ni. Schottky diodes were fabricated on the Si films by deposition of a Schottky metal on the front surface of the film while Ni disilicide provided an intimate ohmic contact at the back. A Pd/n-Si diode using an n-Si film annealed for 2 h at 700 °C in forming gas demonstrated a rectification ratio …

Self-Assembly Of Spatially Separated Silicon Structures By Si Heteroepitaxy On Ni Disilicide, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A nonlithographic approach to produce self-assembled spatially separated Si structures for nanoelectronic applications was developed, employing the metal-induced silicon growth. Densely packed Si whiskers, 500–800 nm thick and up to 2500 nm long, were obtained by magnetron sputtering of Si on a 25 nm thick Ni prelayer at 575 °C. The nucleation of the NiSi2 compound at the Ni–Si interface followed by the Si heteroepitaxy on the lattice-matched NiSi2 is suggested to be the driving force for the whisker formation.

Implementation Of A Si/Sic Hybrid Optically Controlled High-Power Switching Device, Prashant Bhadri, Kuntao Ye, Elena A. Guliants, Fred R. Beyette Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The ever-increasing performance and economy of operation requirements placed on commercial and military transport aircraft are resulting in very complex systems. As a result, the use of fiber optic component technology has lead to high data throughput, immunity to EMI, reduced certification and maintenance costs and reduced weight features. In particular, in avionic systems, data integrity and high data rates are necessary for stable flight control. Fly-by-Light systems that use optical signals to actuate the flight control surfaces of an aircraft have been suggested as a solution to the EMI problem in avionic systems. Current fly-by-light systems are limited by …

Angular Range For Reflection Of P-Polarized Light At The Surface Of An Absorbing Medium With Reflectance Below That At Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, Ericson E. Ugbo

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The range of incidence angle, 0 < φ < φe, over which p-polarized light is reflected at interfaces between transparent and absorbing media with reflectance below that at normal incidence is determined. Contours of constant φe in the complex plane of the relative dielectric constant ε are presented. A method for determining the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index, ε1/2 = n + jk, which is based on measuring φe and the pseudo-Brewster angle φpB, is viable in the domain of fractional optical constants, n, k < 1.

Translation Of 'Balika Badhu: A Selected Anthology Of Bengali Short Stories', Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This project, which began with the desire to render into English a rather long tale by Bimal Kar about five years ago, eventually grew into a considerably more extended compilation of Bengali short stories by 10 of the most well-known practitioners of that art since the heyday of Rabindranath Tagore. The collection is limited in many ways, not the least of which being that no woman writer has been included, and that it contains only a baker's dozen stories (if we count Bonophool's micro-stories collectively as one ) — a number pitifully small considering the vast and prolific field of …

A New Congestion Control Mechanism Proposed For The Sscop Protocol, A. Hali̇m Zai̇m

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

International Telecommunication Union, Telecommunications Sector (ITU-T) Recommendation Q.2110 states that the update of a granted credit window to the transmitter (VR(MR)) is implementation dependent. In this paper, a new algorithm is designed to control the traffic flow coming from malfunctioning users. The VR(MR) parameter is controlled for that purpose. The simulation results show that this new technique nearly doubles the system performance.

Hybrid Sr Arq Scheme Using Trellis Coded Modulation For Point-To-Multipoint Communication Over Nonstationary Channels, Necmi̇ Taşpinar Jan 2002

Hybrid Sr Arq Scheme Using Trellis Coded Modulation For Point-To-Multipoint Communication Over Nonstationary Channels, Necmi̇ Taşpinar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a type-I hybrid SR ARQ scheme using trellis coded modulation (TCM) for point-to-multipoint communication was analyzed on nonstationary broadcast channels where the channel bit error rate (BER) varies over time. A nonstationary channel is modelled as a two-state Markov chain. In the numerical calculations, it is found that, for a given p_{1} and \bar \varepsilon , the values of the average burst length \bar b have a very small influence on the throughput. Numerical results show that the throughput is better for values between 10 ^{-6} and 10 ^{-4}of average bit error rate \bar \varepsilon if the …

Simulation strategies for complex EM systems, both analytic and numerical, are reviewed and categorized, and are illustrated on selected practical complex multicomponent system scenarios currently under investigation in Turkey. Educational issues to ensure proper multidisciplinary exposure of new generations of computer-weaned students, who will have to deal with these problems, are touched upon as well.

Network--Oriented Modeling Of Radiating Electromagnetic Structures, Peter Russer Jan 2002

Network--Oriented Modeling Of Radiating Electromagnetic Structures, Peter Russer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The application of network-oriented modeling for radiating electromagnetic structures is investigated. Network methods are applied to the field problem using the segmentation technique and by specifying canonical Foster representations as compact models of reciprocal linear lossless electromagnetic structures. Connection between different subdomains is obtained via connection circuits exhibiting only ideal transformers. In the case of radiating structures, the complete structure is embedded into a sphere and the field outside the sphere is expanded into orthogonal spherical TM- and TE- waves. For each radiation mode a Cauer canonic circuit representation is given.

Novel Time Domain Radiowave Propagators For Wireless Communication Systems, Funda Akleman, M. O. Özyalçin, Levent Sevgi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, novel time domain wave propagators are used in path loss calculations for macro and micro cell coverage planning in wireless communication systems. Both Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) and Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) based propagators, which were introduced recently and validated and verified on different canonical propagation scenarios, are used for this purpose. Examples are chosen both in rural and urban areas, where two propagators are compared with each other. Excellent agreement between the results obtained via two propagators is presented. The results presented here are very encouraging and these propagators are shown to be powerful tools for not …

Discrete Array Representation Of Continuous Space-Time Source Distributions, Amir Shlivinski, Ehud Heyman Jan 2002

Discrete Array Representation Of Continuous Space-Time Source Distributions, Amir Shlivinski, Ehud Heyman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We consider the realization of a continuous space-time source distributions using a sparse non-uniform point-source array. The construction determines the largest possible cells corresponding to the local source parameters in order to obtain a sparse array, while meeting an error criterion on the pulsed radiation pattern. The scheme is applied for the realization of collimated short-pulse beam fields. The error criterion is imposed within the main beam direction, while outside this region the relative realization error can be large but it is negligible since the field there is small compared to the main beam field.
