Asimmetria Del Rischio Sistematico Dei Titolo Immobiliari Americani: Nuove Evidenze Econometriche, Paola De Santis, Carlo Drago
Carlo Drago

Measuring Gender Difference In Information Sharing Using Network Analysis: The Case Of The Austrian Interlocking Directorship Network In 2009, Carlo Drago, Livia Amidani Aliberti, Davide Carbonai
Carlo Drago
In recent literature a relevant problem has been the relationship between career/personal contact networks and different career paths. In addition the recent advances in social capital theory have shown the way in which networks impact on personal careers. In particular women’s careers appear to be negatively affected by the informational network structure. The main contribution of this work is to propose empirical evidence of this phenomenon by considering the gendered directorship network with relation to Austria and to show the structural differences by gender in the network. By using community detection techniques we have found various communities in which females …
Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin
Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin
Richard H. Serlin
This is an article with an included assignment that I give to my personal finance 1 students. The first part talks about the power of compound interest. I go into depth about the intuition why it's so powerful, why it takes off, and has been called the eighth wonder of the world. I've haven't seen anywhere else an extensive explanation of the intuition like I have here.
In the second part I give the students a nice assignment to see how much their savings can grow if they invest even a modest amount consistently, month in and month out, in …
Long-Term Environmental Problems And Strategic Intergenerational Transfers, Timo Goeschl, Daniel Heyen, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
Long-Term Environmental Problems And Strategic Intergenerational Transfers, Timo Goeschl, Daniel Heyen, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
The impacts of long-lived stock pollutants and the measures supposed to address them link current and future generations. Altruism towards successor generations is a prerequisite for resolving the resulting inter-generational equity issues. Preference asymmetry and imperfect altruism introduce strategic conflicts between generations. Here, a current generation decides on a combination of abatement and whether to provide an imperfect backstop. The future generation decides whether to use the backstop or not. We identify three outcomes: (1) Technology denial, in which the current generation deliberately rejects the imperfect backstop to avoid misuse by the future generation. (2) Under-abatement, in which the current …

Site Assessment For Environmental Restoration, David A. Bainbridge
David A Bainbridge
Restoring degraded desert ecosystems is challenging but it can be done. The first key step is understanding the site history and understanding the disturbance and current site conditions. With this information the appropriate steps can be taken to improve the site ecosystem function and structure.

A Spatial Approach To Energy Economics, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, M Scott Taylor
A Spatial Approach To Energy Economics, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, M Scott Taylor
Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
We develop a spatial model of energy exploitation where energy sources are differentiated by their geographic location and energy density. The spatial setting creates a scaling law that magnifies the importance of differences across energy sources. As a result, renewable sources twice as dense, provide eight times the supply; and all new non-renewable resource plays must first boom and then bust. For both renewable and non-renewable energy sources we link the size of exploitation zones and energy supplies to energy density, and provide empirical measures of key model attributes using data on solar, wind, biomass, and fossil fuel energy sources. …
Strategic Incentives For Climate Geoengineering Coalitions To Exclude Broad Participation, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, Kate L. Ricke, Ken Caldeira
Strategic Incentives For Climate Geoengineering Coalitions To Exclude Broad Participation, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, Kate L. Ricke, Ken Caldeira
Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
Solar geoengineering is the deliberate reduction in the absorption of incoming solar radiation by the Earth's climate system with the aim of reducing impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Climate model simulations project a diversity of regional outcomes that vary with the amount of solar geoengineering deployed. It is unlikely that a single small actor could implement and sustain global-scale geoengineering that harms much of the world without intervention from harmed world powers. However, a sufficiently powerful international coalition might be able to deploy solar geoengineering. Here, we show that regional differences in climate outcomes create strategic incentives to form coalitions …
Convex Combinations Of Quadrant Dependent Copulas, Martin Egozcue, Luis Fuentes García, Wing Wong, Ricardas Zitikis
Convex Combinations Of Quadrant Dependent Copulas, Martin Egozcue, Luis Fuentes García, Wing Wong, Ricardas Zitikis
Martin Egozcue
It is well known that quadrant dependent (QD) random variables are also quadrant dependent in expectation (QDE). Recent literature has offered examples rigorously establishing the fact that there are QDE random variables which are not QD. The examples are based on convex combinations of specially chosen QD copulas: one negatively QD and another positively QD. In this paper we establish general results that determine when convex combinations of arbitrary QD copulas give rise to negatively or positively QD/QDE copulas. In addition to being an interesting mathematical exercise, the established results are helpful when modeling insurance and financial portfolios.
Global Optimization Of Some Difficult Benchmark Functions By Cuckoo-Host Co-Evolution Meta-Heuristics, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Global Optimization Of Some Difficult Benchmark Functions By Cuckoo-Host Co-Evolution Meta-Heuristics, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
This paper proposes a novel method of global optimization based on cuckoo-host co-evaluation. It also develops a Fortran-77 code for the algorithm. The algorithm has been tested on 96 benchmark functions (of which the results of 32 relatively harder problems have been reported). The proposed method is comparable to the Differential Evolution method of global optimization.
Environmental Impacts Of Stover Removal In The Corn Belt, Alicia English, Wallace E. Tyner, Juan Sesmero, Phillip Owens, David J. Muth Jr.
Environmental Impacts Of Stover Removal In The Corn Belt, Alicia English, Wallace E. Tyner, Juan Sesmero, Phillip Owens, David J. Muth Jr.
David J. Muth
When considering the market for biomass from corn stover resources erosion and soil quality issues are important to consider. Removal of stover can be beneficial in some areas, especially when coordinated with other conservation practices, such as vegetative barrier strips and cover crops. However, benefits are highly dependent on several factors, namely if farmers see costs and benefits associated with erosion and the tradeoffs with the removal of biomass. This paper uses results from an integrated RUSLE2/WEPS model to incorporate six different regime choices, covering management, harvest and conservation, into a simple profit maximization model to show these tradeoffs.
Back To The Future Of Green Powered Economies, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, M. Scott Taylor
Back To The Future Of Green Powered Economies, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, M. Scott Taylor
Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of power density [Watts/m2] into economics. By introducing an explicit spatial structure into a simple general equilibrium model we are able to show how the power density of available energy resources determines the extent of energy exploitation, the density of urban agglomerations, and the peak level of income per capita. Using a simple Malthusian model to sort population across geographic space we demonstrate how the density of available energy supplies creates density in energy demands by agglomerating economic activity. We label this result the density-creates-density hypothesis and evaluate it using …

Towards Better Estimation Of Jump Diffusion Models, Richard H. Serlin
Richard H. Serlin
I discuss in-depth modern techniques for the estimation of Jump Diffusion models with suggestions for improvements. There is a heavy focus on intuition. I also point out examples of the use of improper techniques (biased and inconsistent) in the top tier finance literature.
Deliberating Beyond Evidence: Lessons From Integrated Assessment Modelling, Elisa Vecchione
Deliberating Beyond Evidence: Lessons From Integrated Assessment Modelling, Elisa Vecchione
Elisa Vecchione
The premises of this paper rely on associating policy inertia toward action on climate change with the inadequacy of the classical ‘liability culture’ of evidence-based policy-making to deal with this global environmental challenge. To provide support to this hypothesis, the following discussion analyses the technical properties and the current policy use of Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) of economic-climate interactions. The paper contends that IAM is still not clarified enough as far as its potential for information-production in the framework of policy making processes is concerned, and that this fact is symptomatic of the current inability of societies to undertake the …

Our finding shows that mining is an excellent contributor to economic growth and development as in the case of Papua New Guinea.Tax revenue from PNG Mining industries contributions to the PNG fiscal basket remains strong and growing steadily. The mining and minerals tax revenue remains an important contributor to the government fiscal budget over the last 10 years. This has been a strong contributor to …
A Comparative Study Of Trends In Globalization Using Different Synthetic Indicators, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
A Comparative Study Of Trends In Globalization Using Different Synthetic Indicators, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
Using the KOF data at the annual level, we construct ten different composite indices for comparing the extent of globalization of 131 countries for eleven years, 1999-2009. We compare the different indices of globalization among themselves and also with the Dreher-KOF index of globalization and find that among the different indices the Dreher-Chebyshev index is the most representative one. Among the countries, we concentrate on the trends in globalization of India and her neighboring countries, Bangladesh, China, and Pakistan.
A Maximum Entropy Perspective Of Pena’S Synthetic Indicators, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
A Maximum Entropy Perspective Of Pena’S Synthetic Indicators, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
This paper uses mixed combinatorial-cum-real particle swarm method to obtain a heuristically optimal order in which the constituent variables can be arranged so as to yield some generalized maximum entropy synthetic indicators that represent the constituent variables in the best information-theoretic sense. It may help resolve the arbitrariness and indeterminacy of Pena’s method of construction of a synthetic indicator which at present is very sensitive to the order in which the constituent variables (whose linear aggregation yields the synthetic indicator) are arranged.
Review Of Solomon Islands’ Policies And Programs To Promote Private Sector Development And Small Business, Deogratias Harorimana Sr
Review Of Solomon Islands’ Policies And Programs To Promote Private Sector Development And Small Business, Deogratias Harorimana Sr
Dr Deogratias Harorimana
Solomon Islands is a nation with vast resources with huge potential to excel economically if proper business atmosphere is provided for both private sector development and small and medium enterprises entrepreneurship. Conducive policies that, not only, a mere statement but is broken down to workable strategies with quantitative expected outcome with a strong mentoring mechanism is very important. Previous governments have continuously ignored the importance of having small business policies until lately when NCRA government came up with a set of policies that strategically addresses the significance of small and medium businesses. However, notwithstanding foreign investment is very important in …
A Note On Construction Of Heuristically Optimal Pena’S Synthetic Indicators By The Particle Swarm Method Of Global Optimization, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
A Note On Construction Of Heuristically Optimal Pena’S Synthetic Indicators By The Particle Swarm Method Of Global Optimization, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
Pena’s method of construction of a synthetic indicator is very sensitive to the order in which the constituent variables (whose linear aggregation yields the synthetic indicator) are arranged. Due to this, Pena’s method can at present give only an arbitrary synthetic indicator whose representativeness is indeterminate and uncertain, especially when the number of constituent variables is not very small. This paper uses discrete global optimization method based on the Particle Swarms to obtain a heuristically optimal order in which the constituent variables can be arranged so as to yield Pena’s synthetic indicator that maximizes the minimal absolute (or squared) correlation …
A Note On The Indeterminacy And Arbitrariness Of Pena’S Method Of Construction Of Synthetic Indicators, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
A Note On The Indeterminacy And Arbitrariness Of Pena’S Method Of Construction Of Synthetic Indicators, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
In this paper we demonstrate that Pena’s method of construction of a synthetic indicator is very sensitive to the order in which the constituent variables (whose linear aggregation yields the synthetic indicator) are arranged. Since m number of constituent variables may be arranged in m-factorial ways, even a moderately large m can give rise to a very large number of synthetic indicators from which one cannot choose the one which best represents the constituent variables. Given that an analyst has too little information as to the order in which a sizeable number of constituent variables must be arranged so as …

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette
Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette
Cari Bourette
Since 2006, there has been ongoing research into the correlation of a set of oscillating mood factors and socioeconomic, geopolitical, and natural events with the goal of forecasting increased risks of destabilizing events. While promising results have been forthcoming, it has been difficult to present models that allowed those outside a small circle of specialists to participate. Between July 2007 and June 2010, weekly social mood projections, as published in monthly issues of MoodCompass, were used to develop a model to convert four oscillating mood factors into stock market expectations. This model was modified to generate signals of projected stock …

Testing For Weak Form Market Efficiency In Indian Foreign Exchange Makret, Anoop Sasikumar
Anoop Sasikumar
This paper attempts to examine the weak form of market efficiency in the Indian foreign exchange market using a family of variance ratio tests. Monthly Nominal Effective Exchange Rate (NEER) data from April 1993-June 2010 were used for the analysis. NEER series was considered for the analysis as it is supposed to capture more information compared to the bilateral exchange rates. Three individual variance ratio tests as well as three joint variance ratio tests were used for the purpose of analysis. After analyzing the results from both individual and joint variance ratio test, it was concluded that Indian foreign exchange …
