Denitrification Along Pangborn Creek In The Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer, Washington, Leslie B. (Leslie Braverman) Mckee Jan 2004

Denitrification Along Pangborn Creek In The Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer, Washington, Leslie B. (Leslie Braverman) Mckee

WWU Graduate School Collection

The Abbotsford-Sumas aquifer is a shallow, unconfined aquifer located in the agricultural regions of southwestern British Columbia and northwestern Washington and has a history of nitrate contamination. I monitored nitrate distributions in a study area bisected by a wide- scale peat deposit within a portion of the Whatcom County component of the aquifer to assess the current nitrate distribution, evaluate ground and surface water interactions in the peat, and determine the affect of peat on denitrification.

The water quality dataset and statistical analyses showed that nitrate contamination was heavily concentrated upgradient of the peatlands. In general, shallow wells (table) north …

Why Has The Land Memory Changed?, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng Jan 2004

Why Has The Land Memory Changed?, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The ‘‘land memory’’ refers to an interseasonal predictability of the summer monsoon rainfall in the south- western United States, describing a relationship of the summer monsoon rainfall anomaly with anomalies in the antecedent winter season snow and land surface conditions in the western United States. This relationship has varied, however, showing a peculiar on-and-off feature in the last century. It is important to understand this variation so that the relationship can be used to assist making predictions of the monsoon rainfall for that region. This note offers the evidence and shows that the change of the land memory may have …

Sedimentology And Geochemistry Of An Urban Coastal Lake System: Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve, Gold Coast, Queensland, Tracy D. Frank, Christopher R. Fielding Jan 2004

Sedimentology And Geochemistry Of An Urban Coastal Lake System: Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve, Gold Coast, Queensland, Tracy D. Frank, Christopher R. Fielding

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A study was initiated to address environmental concerns associated with changes in land use in the catchment area of Coombabah Lake, a brackish coastal lake system located in southeast Queensland. Sedimentological and geochemical data derived from a series of cores that penetrate the ca. 0–6000 year-old lacustrine sequence indicate that throughout much of its history, Coombabah Lake has remained a quiet, shallow, water body fed by fine-grained sediment dropped from suspension. Discrete and laterally continuous, shelly horizons form the basis for the stratigraphy developed for the lake sequence. A lithological transition in the upper 50 cm of the sediment column, …

Drought Monitoring Using Data Mining Techniques: A Case Study For Nebraska, Usa, Tsegaye Tadesse, Donald A. Wilhite, Sherri K. Harms, Michael J. Hayes, Steve Goddard

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought has an impact on many aspects of society. To help decision makers reduce the impacts of drought, it is important to improve our understanding of the characteristics and relationships of atmospheric and oceanic parameters that cause drought. In this study, the use of data mining techniques is introduced to find associations between drought and several oceanic and climatic indices that could help users in making knowledgeable decisions about drought responses before the drought actually occurs. Data mining techniques enable users to search for hidden patterns and find association rules for target data sets such as drought episodes. These techniques …

Enhanced Flushing With Cyclodextrin For The Remediation Of Creosote Contaminated Soil, Monalisa Dutta Jan 2004

Enhanced Flushing With Cyclodextrin For The Remediation Of Creosote Contaminated Soil, Monalisa Dutta

LSU Master's Theses

Past practices of applying creosote and coal tar preservatives to wood, such as unlined pits and trenches, have resulted in contamination of the surface and ground water at thousand of sites. The low aqueous solubility, volatility and bioavailability of many these constituents limit their degradation by natural attenuation and standard remediation techniques such as ground water flushing, soil vapor extraction, and bioremediation. While research has shown that cyclodextrin solutions have the ability to enhance the solubility of some of the components of creosote, additional work is needed to evaluate its potential as a remedial agent for these sites. Equilibrium batch …

A Comparison Of A High-Resolution Survey And A Three-Dimensional Seismic Survey In A Feature-Rich Region Of The Green Canyon Area, Gulf Of Mexico, Bruce Miles Samuel Jan 2004

A Comparison Of A High-Resolution Survey And A Three-Dimensional Seismic Survey In A Feature-Rich Region Of The Green Canyon Area, Gulf Of Mexico, Bruce Miles Samuel

LSU Master's Theses

Recent advances in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology have revolutionized the positioning and accuracy of high-resolution deep sea mapping tools. Geologic hazard and engineering surveys by AUV’s are producing high-resolution data sets of a quality that has never before been seen. Three-dimensional (3D) seismic data, though traditionally used for only deep subsurface mapping of large areas, is now being reprocessed at a higher resolution and utilized in well site investigations and geologic hazard assessments. This study makes a comparison between a 3D seismic survey and an AUV high-resolution survey in order to determine the strengths and weaknesses of both of …

Improving Nutrient Management At Lake Joondalup, Western Australia, Through Identification Of Key Sources And Current Trajectories, Michelle Cumbers

Theses : Honours

Eutrophication has become a considerable issue for managers of water bodies across Australia. Rapid urbanisation in the south-west of Western Australia is causing the eutrophication of many wetlands within the region. Lake Joondalup is a eutrophic, urban lake, located approximately 20km north of Perth city. It comprises part of the Yellagonga Regional Park, having a high conservation value. The aim of this study was to provide managers of Lake Joondalup with information on the relative importance of different nutrient sources into the lake, thus enabling the development of appropriate management strategies. Additionally, a historical examination of available water quality data …

A Holocene Record Of Changing Arctic Ocean Ice Drift Analogous To The Effects Of The Arctic Oscillation, Dennis A. Darby, Jens F. Bischof Jan 2004

A Holocene Record Of Changing Arctic Ocean Ice Drift Analogous To The Effects Of The Arctic Oscillation, Dennis A. Darby, Jens F. Bischof

OES Faculty Publications

The Arctic Oscillation (AO) controls the configuration of the Transpolar Drift (TPD). If thicker ice from the Beaufort Gyre were exported, the volume of fresh water/sea ice in the Nordic seas would significantly increase, decreasing the formation of North Atlantic deep water. This would cool large parts of the Northern Hemisphere and affect global climate. Therefore, in order to understand how the global climate system functions, it is imperative to know how the TPD changed over the last millennium or more. The provenance of grains in a sediment core located near the confluence of the TPD and the Beaufort Gyre …

Simulated Changes In Shallow Groundwater And Vegetation Distributions Under Different Reservoir Operations Scenarios, Mark Cable Rains, Jeffery F. Mount, Eric W. Larsen Jan 2004

Simulated Changes In Shallow Groundwater And Vegetation Distributions Under Different Reservoir Operations Scenarios, Mark Cable Rains, Jeffery F. Mount, Eric W. Larsen

Geology Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to develop and use a linked groundwater and vegetation model to simulate groundwater and vegetation distributions in a riverine and reservoir-fringe system under different reservoir operations scenarios. This study was conducted where Little Stony Creek flows into East Park Reservoir on the east front of the Coast Range, northern California. A numerical groundwater model was used to model mean depth to groundwater during the growing season for water years 1980–1999 for each of five community types identified on the study site. Multiple vegetation models were developed, each of which described the probability that a …

Discontinuities In The Icebox Formation (Ordovician), Williston Basin, North Dakota And Montana, Aaron J. Ulishney Jan 2004

Discontinuities In The Icebox Formation (Ordovician), Williston Basin, North Dakota And Montana, Aaron J. Ulishney

Theses and Dissertations

The Ordovician Winnipeg Group is composed of three formations; in ascending order, the Black Island Formation, the Icebox Formation, and the Roughlock Formation. The Icebox Formation is largely composed of shale. This work shows that discontinuities and coarser facies exist within the Icebox Formation and that they are traceable throughout the subsurface of North Dakota and eastern Montana. This work also illustrates possible sea-level changes during the deposition of the Icebox Formation along with probable source areas providing detrital sediments into the study area.

Gamma-ray wireline logs were used to distinguish the formations of the Winnipeg Group from each other, …

An Analysis Of Simulated Long-Term Soil Moisture Data For Three Land Uses Under Contrasting Hydroclimatic Conditions In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mamood, Kenneth G. Hubbard Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Simulated Long-Term Soil Moisture Data For Three Land Uses Under Contrasting Hydroclimatic Conditions In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mamood, Kenneth G. Hubbard

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Personnel Publications

Soil moisture (SM) plays an important role in land surface and atmosphere interactions. It modifies energy balance near the surface and the rate of water cycling between land and atmosphere. The lack of observed SM data prohibits understanding of SM variations at climate scales under varying land uses. However, with simulation models it is possible to develop a long-term SM dataset and study these issues. In this paper a water balance model is used to provide a quantitative assessment of SM climatologies for three land uses, namely, irrigated corn, rain-fed corn, and grass, grown under three hydroclimatic regimes in Nebraska. …

Geochemistry And Geochronology Of Orthogneisses In The Derbent (Alaşehir) Area, Eastern Part Of The Ödemiş-Kiraz Submassif, Menderes Massif: Pan-African Magmatic Activity, Ersi̇n Koralay, O. Özcan Dora, Fukun Chen, Muharrem Satir, Osman Candan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Pan-African basement rocks and the Palaeozoic cover series of the Menderes Massif are exposed around Derbent (Alaşehir) in the eastern part of the Ödemiş-Kiraz submassif. Garnet-mica schists of the Pan-African basement are intruded by the protoliths of orthogneisses and Triassic leucocratic orthogneisses. This study focuses on the geochronology and geochemistry of orthogneisses related to the Pan-African evolution of the Menderes Massif in latest Proterozoic time. Geochemical data suggest that the orthogneisses were derived from S-type, peraluminous, syn- to post-collisional granitoids of calc-alkaline affinity. Zircon grains from the orthogneisses, which are euhedral with typical igneous morphologies, were dated by the Pb-Pb …

Trace- And Rare-Earth Element Geochemistry Of The Karalar (Gazipaşa-Antalya) Barite-Galena Deposits, Southern Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, Ahmet Gökçe Jan 2004

Trace- And Rare-Earth Element Geochemistry Of The Karalar (Gazipaşa-Antalya) Barite-Galena Deposits, Southern Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, Ahmet Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Karalar barite-galena deposits are typical examples of carbonate-hosted barite-galena deposits that occur widely in the central Taurides. Recent mining activity has been concentrated in the Büyük and Boyalık mine areas. The mineralisation occurs as ore veins along fault zones and as ore-filled breccia zones along the strongly deformed lower walls of limestone blocks in the Permian limestones of the Bıçkıcı Formation. These veins contain mainly barite (80-85%) and galena (10-15%), and lesser amounts of sphalerite, pyrite, fahlore, limonite, quartz and calcite as gangue minerals. Barite developed during an early episode of mineralisation and was mylonitised before the precipitation of …

General Geology And Geochemistry Of Metamorphosed Proterozoic Mafic Dikes And Sills, Tobacco Root Mountains, Montana, John B. Brady, Heidi K. Mohlman, Caroline Harris, Sarah K. Carmichael, Lisa J. Jacob, Wilfredo R. Chaparro Jan 2004

General Geology And Geochemistry Of Metamorphosed Proterozoic Mafic Dikes And Sills, Tobacco Root Mountains, Montana, John B. Brady, Heidi K. Mohlman, Caroline Harris, Sarah K. Carmichael, Lisa J. Jacob, Wilfredo R. Chaparro

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Just over two billion years ago, basaltic magma intruded rocks of the Pony– Middle Mountain Metamorphic Suite and the Indian Creek Metamorphic Suite that now crop out in the Tobacco Root Mountains of Montana near the northwestern margin of the Wyoming province. Numerous examples can be found of mafic dikes that crosscut layering and gneissic banding, demonstrating that the host rocks were metamorphosed to form the gneissic texture prior to intrusion of the dikes. Although many of the intrusions appear to be sills that followed compositional layering, close inspection reveals low-angle discordance in nearly every case, consistent with rotation of …

Textures and mineral assemblages of metamorphic rocks of the Tobacco Root Mountains are consistent with metamorphism of all rocks during the Big Sky orogeny (1.77 Ga) at relatively high pressure (P >1.0 GPa) followed by differential reequilibration on a clockwise P-T path at lower pressures (0.6–0.8 GPa). The highest pressures are documented by coarse-grained kyanite and orthopyroxene in aluminous orthoamphibolites, which require P ≥ 1.0 GPa. Other higher-pressure mineral assemblages of note include kyanite + orthoamphibole and kyanite + K-feldspar. Abundant textural evidence for partial melting in pelitic and basaltic rocks includes leucosomes, very large (several cm across) porphyroblasts of …

Hydrologic Variations Within Created And Natural Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Aaron Dyer Despres Jan 2004

Hydrologic Variations Within Created And Natural Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Aaron Dyer Despres

OES Theses and Dissertations

The hydrology of wetlands, particularly how wetland soils collect, store, and redistribute water strongly affects how wetland systems function. In created wetlands, construction processes and materials influence the hydrology and consequently, the potential for successful reestablishment of target vegetation communities. During 2002–2004, the Virginia Department of Transportation constructed large mitigation wetlands on two different Quaternary aged surfaces with very similar hydrogeomorphic conditions. The Sandy Bottom Nature Park site (SBNP) located in Hampton, VA and rests on the sandy loam Tabb Formation while the Charles City Wetland site (CCW) lies on the older and clay-rich Shirley Formation. This study documents and …

An Investigation Of Dissolved Organic Matter In A Shallow Coastal Bay Subject To Aureococcus Anophagefferens Blooms, Jean-Paul Simjouw Jan 2004

An Investigation Of Dissolved Organic Matter In A Shallow Coastal Bay Subject To Aureococcus Anophagefferens Blooms, Jean-Paul Simjouw

OES Theses and Dissertations

Aureococcus anophagefferens, the pelagophyte responsible for brown tide blooms, was identified in Chincoteague Bay in 1997 and has “bloomed” there since at least 1998. Aureococcus anophagefferens is capable of using dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) substrates to support growth, and this utilization is hypothesized to give the organism a competitive advantage relative to other phytoplankton when inorganic nutrient concentrations are low or depleted. Because previous studies suggest dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important in initiating and sustaining brown tide blooms, a field study of the variations in DOC concentration and DOM composition was performed at …

Timing And Paleoclimatic Significance Of Latest Pleistocene And Holocene Cirque Glaciation In The Enchantment Lakes Basin, North Cascades, Wa, Eric L. (Eric Leland) Bilderback Jan 2004

Timing And Paleoclimatic Significance Of Latest Pleistocene And Holocene Cirque Glaciation In The Enchantment Lakes Basin, North Cascades, Wa, Eric L. (Eric Leland) Bilderback

WWU Graduate School Collection

The Enchantment Lakes Basin in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Washington, preserves two sets of moraines that record distinct post-Wisconsin maximum advances of cirque glaciers in the eastern North Cascades. Cores collected from five lakes adjacent to the moraines indicate that there were two Neoglacial advances, culminating with the Little Ice Age, and one slightly larger advance that ended coincident with the termination of the North Atlantic Younger Dryas event. The cores show no evidence for an early Holocene advance, in contrast to some other studies in the North Cascades, (e.g., Heine, 1998; Thomas, 1997; Thomas et al., 2000).

Seismic Stratigraphic Investigation Of The Ukpokiti Field Channel Complex, Oml 108, Offshore Nigeria, Northwestern Niger Delta, Toby Latwan Stewart

LSU Master's Theses

Detailed seismic stratigraphic analyses and mapping show that a well defined Ukpokiti Field Channel complex (late Miocene) found on the up-thrown side of a major back-to-back fault system in the West Niger delta inner-continental shelf probably formed during a single eustatic fall. The channel (>500 msec, 10 km wide) shows several tributaries entering the trunk axis from what was probably a surface of subaerial exposure. Slumping is prominent on the north flank of the trunk channel. No channel unconformity is evident in the down-thrown block. This investigation seeks to resolve the lack of down-dip correlative seismic expression across the …

Wheatbelt Waterwise = Saltwise : Gardening Guide, John Colwill, Juana Roe Jan 2004

Wheatbelt Waterwise = Saltwise : Gardening Guide, John Colwill, Juana Roe

Bulletins 4000 -

As a result of agricultural clearing, many country towns are now feeling the effects of rising groundwater and the salt that it carries. Salinity has been identified as Australia’s number one environmental problem. While most people think that salinity means land lost to agriculture, it also poses a serious threat to many country towns. A report for the Department of Agriculture in 2001 highlighted the need for simple and cost-effective salinity management strategies to be adopted in wheatbelt towns. These included water recycling, revegetation and more efficient water use.

Temporal Variability In Nutrient Transport In A First-Order Agricultural Basin In Southern Ontario, Merrin L. Macrae Jan 2004

Temporal Variability In Nutrient Transport In A First-Order Agricultural Basin In Southern Ontario, Merrin L. Macrae

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines phosphorus and nitrate transport in a first-order agricultural catchment in Southern Ontario. Specific areas of concern relate to (1) long- and short-term temporal variability in nutrient export patterns, (2) the role of drainage tiles in annual nutrient export, (3) the effects of antecedent hydrologic conditions (AHC) on nutrient export patterns and (4) temporal variability in the nutrient retention in riparian buffer strips and streams. Temporal variability in hydrochemical export from the study basin over a two-year period is described and quantified and the importance of high magnitude events is highlighted. This is the first comprehensive study to …
