The sedimentary materials and bottom topography of more than 2400 square miles of the inner continental shelf floor north off the Chesapeake Bay entrance have been surveyed for potential mineral resources. Sediments consist of two principal types: (1) fine sand and (2) medium to coarse sand. The fine sand is grey-colored, subrounded, rich in quartz and relatively 11clean 11 and well sorted. The medium-coarse sand is typically iron-stained, rich in shell and poorly sorted. The fine sand covers inner parts of the shelf floor whereas medium to coarse sand covers seaward parts. Additionally, shell-rich medium to coarse sand occurs on …

Specialized bibliographies are sometimes needed in connection with the research studies being pursued at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The Bahamas Bibliography arose out of the needs of marine geologists, biologists and physical oceanographers engaged in studies of beaches, fishes and inlet currents in the Bahama Islands. Although the present bibliography may suffer from completeness, it significantly surpasses in number of citations the only other known bibliography of like kind.

The James River estuary of the Chesapeake Bay region follows the course of a former river valley drowned within the last 9,000 years by the most recent rise of sea level. The floor is shaped into a central channel bordered by submerged shoals. Observations show suspended sediment is transported mainly by alternating tidal currents and secondarily by the net nontidal estuarine circulation. Transport results in a sequence of grain size distributions reflecting the mixing of two textural end members, clay and sand.

Silty clay is deposited in the river and upper estuary, whereas sand occurs near the mouth. Transitional types, …

I have modified the scope of this paper slightly to include urban pollution because the pollution problems produced by the agricultural industry are essentially the same as those produced by municipalities. We know that environmental degradation occurs as a result of the discharge and the byproducts from both sources.

In the case of agricultural activities, the terrain has and still is being modified to convert it to crop production. Origin Of Mound Structures Within The Salt Marsh Of Parramore Island, Virginia, Jonathan P. Cooper

The small circular mounds on Parramore Island have puzzled many people because of their amazing circularity and apparent lack of any trend but a south-southwest trend following the present coastline. In the middle of the island, aerial photographs show that the mounds generally decrease in size near their northern limit and the bare sandy tops disappear as the smaller mounds are completely covered with trees. The southernmost mounds are completely surrounded by salt marsh facies as compared to the dune facies in which the mounds are located to the north.

Fluctuations of the water table in a marine beach over a rising half-tide cycle were investigated as a function of variations in local still water level, swash runup distance, distance of a sampling station from the shoreline, and atmospheric pressure. The data were taken from a 30-day time series of observations of environmental variables taken at Virginia Beach, Virginia, during August and September, 1969. Sequential linear multiple regression analyses were used to rank the process variables in order of importance in each of 13 water-table monitoring wells spaced along a transect transverse to the shoreline . The present study describes a new approach to quantitative sediment tracing with dyed (fluorescent) particles, which can be used to obtain estimates of grain velocity, estimates of mobile layer thickness, and estimates of the rate of longshore sand transport.A simplified stochastic-process model was employed Involving the use of statistical procedures to analyze tracer displacement data on a time-stratified basis. The procedures provide meaningful estimates of the direction and magnitude of the movement of beach sand through set Intervals of time.

The Rappahannock Shoal and spoil disposal area investigated encompasses an area of approximately 180 square miles. The initial sampling program (1961) consisted of the establishment of a series of transects across the survey area. One hundred sampling stations were located along the established transects.

Inasmuch as the texture of the bottom sediments varied distinctly from place to place within the mid-bay region, the initial objective was to delineate the sediment distribution. Ninety-eight core samples were taken from the area with a modified Phleger coring device and analyzed in detail for textural characteristics. Paleontological and lithological studies of engineering borings and boring logs subaerial erosion surface of Pliocene (?)-Pleistocene age cuts across clastic sediments of pre-Yorktownian Miocene age in the subsurface and subbottom of the lower Chesapeake Bay area. When the bore-hole data are coupled with the results of subbottom echo profiling and piledriving records, it is possible to construct accurate cross sections of the buried Miocene-Pleistocene contact. The cross sections show "lows" in the erosion surface that may be correlated with the buried channels of the Pleistocene Elizabeth, James, York, and Susquehanna river valleys. Remains of three drowned forests have been investigated at Odiorne Point, New Hampshire, and Fort Lawrence and Grand Pre, west-central Nova Scotia. Carbon-14 ages and altitudes below mean tide levels were determined for four in-place stumps of white pine at each locality. Assuming that each dated stump was killed by rising salt water, and that its C14 age represented its true age at death, it was possible to construct curves showing the sequence of submergence and emergence at each site.

A continuous transgression of the sea, approximating 0.31 foot per century, is indicated for the period 4,500-3,200 B.P. This rate …

The data included in this report have resulted from a series of monthly offshore cruises conducted by the Ichthyology Research Section. The cruises were made to obtain information on the distribution and abundance of pelagic eggs and larvae of fishes. Since the biological results will be reported in a series of separate papers (Joseph, Massmann and Norcross, 1961), it was felt that the raw hydrographic data shpuld be made available in a single source.
