Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Metamaterial-based microwave components are among the state-of-the-art heater and sensor designs for microfluidic systems. The miniaturization and energy-focusing abilities of the metamaterial-based components make it possible to adopt microwave components operating at wavelengths in the order of 10 cm for microfluidic systems. Microwave systems are particularly advantageous for point-of-care and high-throughput applications due to their high speed of operation, very low instrumentation cost, ability to selectively and internally heat specimens, and ability of label-free sensing. In this study, the efficiency and behavior of microwave components designed for heating and sensing small volumes in the scale of nanoliters are studied. In …

An Integrated Analysis For Sustainable Supply Of Remote Winter Tourist Centers - A Future Concept Case Study, Ajla Merzic, Mustafa Music, Mirsad Rascic, Nijaz Hadzimejlic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In every power system there are consumer areas away from traditional power networks. Existing grid expansion can always be treated as one of the ways of powering them over long transmission and distribution lines. This is often characterized by significant transmission losses, as well as significant investments, depending on the distance and the infrastructure development. On the other hand, there are cases when these consumers are not connected to the power system and use alternative methods of supply. For that matter, possible solutions may use locally available energy sources. In this paper, comparative analyses between independent power supply through particular …

A Ring Crossover Genetic Algorithm For The Unit Commitment Problem, Syed Basit Ali Bukhari, Aftab Ahmad, Syed Auon Raza, Muhammad Noman Siddique Jan 2016

A Ring Crossover Genetic Algorithm For The Unit Commitment Problem, Syed Basit Ali Bukhari, Aftab Ahmad, Syed Auon Raza, Muhammad Noman Siddique

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The unit commitment problem (UCP) is a nonlinear, mixed-integer, constraint optimization problem and is considered a complex problem in electrical power systems. It is the combination of two interlinked subproblems, namely the generator scheduling problem and the generation allocation problem. In large systems, the UCP turns out to be increasingly complicated due to the large number of possible ON and OFF combinations of units in the power system over a scheduling time horizon. Due to the insufficiency of conventional approaches in handling large systems, numerous metaheuristic techniques are being developed for solving this problem. The genetic algorithm (GA) is one …

Exploring Feature Sets For Turkish Word Sense Disambiguation, Bahar İlgen, Eşref Adali, Ahmet Cüneyd Tantuğ

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an exploration and evaluation of a diverse set of features that influence word-sense disambiguation (WSD) performance. WSD has the potential to improve many natural language processing (NLP) tasks as being one of the most crucial steps in the area. It is known that exploiting effective features and removing redundant ones help improving the results. There are two groups of feature sets to disambiguate senses and select the most appropriate ones among a set of candidates: collocational and bag-of-words (BoW) features. We introduce the effects of using these two feature sets on the Turkish Lexical Sample Dataset (TLSD), …

Some Observations On No-Load Losses Of An Asymmetrical Six-Phase Synchronous Machine, Arif Iqbal, Girish Kumar Singh, Vinay Pant

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The use of multiphase (more than three-phase) ac machines is well adopted in different high power applications and the evaluation of different losses (no load losses, short circuit load loss, friction and windage losses, and stray loss) in multiphase machines is extremely important for the correct determination of their operating performance. Therefore, the paper presents a detailed experimental investigation of an asymmetrical (30$^{\circ}$ displacement between the two winding sets) six-phase synchronous machine for determination of different losses under no-load condition. Moreover, a comparative study of losses for a six-phase and three-phase synchronous machine has also been performed. The results are …

Balancing Exploration And Exploitation By Using Sequential Execution Cooperation Between Artificial Bee Colony And Migrating Birds Optimization Algorithms, Hasan Makas, Nejat Yumuşak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a metaheuristic search method inspired by bees' foraging behaviour. With its global search ability in scout bee phase, it can easily escape from local optimum traps in the problem space. Therefore, it is good at exploration. The migrating birds optimization (MBO) algorithm is another recent metaheuristic search method. It simulates birds' V flight formation, which minimizes energy consumption during flight. The MBO algorithm achieves a good convergence to the global optimum by using its own unique benefit mechanism. That is, it has a good exploitation capability. This paper aimed to combine the good …

A Sampling-Based Method Using An Improved Nonparametric Density Estimator For Probabilistic Harmonic Load Flow Calculation, Farshid Nasrfard-Jahromi, Mohammad Mohammadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Harmonic distortion in electrical power systems is responsible for several technical problems. Harmonic load flow (HLF) methods have been employed in order to predict and solve many of the problems from a deterministic point of view. Moreover, methods based on probability theory have been developed to deal with the uncertainties in power systems and the random nature of harmonics. Unfortunately, since many of these methods are based on linearized models or some simplifying assumptions, they do not have acceptable accuracy. This paper proposes the use of an efficient sampling method, median Latin hypercube sampling, combined with an improved kernel density …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a new three-phase three-level voltage source inverter. The proposed topology constitutes the conventional three-phase two-level inverter with three bidirectional switches. For purpose of generating the appropriate switching gate signals, two different commutation strategies are suggested and analyzed. A comparison between both strategies in terms of power losses and efficiency are presented. To ensure the feasibility of the proposed configuration with its suggested commutation strategies, the prototype of the proposed inverter was manufactured and the experimental results are given.

Relay Coordination Analysis And Protection Solutions For Smart Grid Distribution Systems, Mehmet Tan Turan, Erdi̇n Gökalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Growing complexity of conventional power grids and their management, increasing power demand and energy quality expectations considering grid reliability, and efficiency and security concerns have triggered the evolution of smart grids. This is an expected result of implementing new technologies in existing grids, including renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic modules. With implementation of such new elements to the system, the protection concept should be considered by system regulators. In order to analyze protection problems, simulation-based analysis should be carried out before high-cost experimental studies. In this study, a simulation-based evaluation for a smart grid-based distribution system is …

An Unsupervised Heterogeneous Log-Based Framework For Anomaly Detection, Asif Iqbal Hajamydeen, Nur Izura Udzir, Ramlan Mahmod, Abdul Azim Abdul Ghani Jan 2016

An Unsupervised Heterogeneous Log-Based Framework For Anomaly Detection, Asif Iqbal Hajamydeen, Nur Izura Udzir, Ramlan Mahmod, Abdul Azim Abdul Ghani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Log analysis is a method to identify intrusions at the host or network level by scrutinizing the log events recorded by the operating systems, applications, and devices. Most work contemplates a single type of log for analysis, leading to an unclear picture of the situation and difficulty in deciding the existence of an intrusion. Moreover, most existing detection methods are knowledge-dependent, i.e. using either the characteristics of an anomaly or the baseline of normal traffic behavior, which limits the detection process to only anomalies based on the acquired knowledge. To discover a wide range of anomalies by scrutinizing various logs, …

Reconstructive Sensing Circuit For Complementary Resistive Switches-Based Crossbar Memories, Ertuğrul Karakulak, Reşat Mutlu, Erdem Uçar Jan 2016

Reconstructive Sensing Circuit For Complementary Resistive Switches-Based Crossbar Memories, Ertuğrul Karakulak, Reşat Mutlu, Erdem Uçar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Complementary resistive switches (CRSs) are suggested as an alternative to one-cell memristor memories to decrease leakage currents. However, their sensing is more difficult and complex than one-cell memristor memories. A method has been given for sensing their state using only DC voltages in the literature. However, in this strategy, sensing one of the logic states results in the destruction of the state and the destroyed state must be written again. To the best of our knowledge, a circuit with this sensing strategy does not exist in the literature yet. In this paper, such a circuit employing this method, which is …

Finger-Vein Biometric Identification Using Convolutional Neural Network, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Rabia Bakhteri Jan 2016

Finger-Vein Biometric Identification Using Convolutional Neural Network, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Rabia Bakhteri

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A novel approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for finger-vein biometric identification is presented in this paper. Unlike existing biometric techniques such as fingerprint and face, vein patterns are inside the body, making them virtually impossible to replicate. This also makes finger-vein biometrics a more secure alternative without being susceptible to forgery, damage, or change with time. In conventional finger-vein recognition methods, complex image processing is required to remove noise and extract and enhance the features before the image classification can be performed in order to achieve high performance accuracy. In this regard, a significant advantage of the CNN …

Fetal Electrocardiogram Estimation Using Polynomial Eigenvalue Decomposition, Soydan Redif

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

decomposition (PEVD) to the problem of fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) extraction from real ECG recordings obtained from abdominal leads. We model the fetal ECG extraction problem as a broadband sensor array signal processing problem in order to account for the broadband nature of the ECG noise present in the recordings. An algorithm for providing an approximate PEVD is used in order to estimate the broadband noise subspace. Suppression of the broadband noise and maternal ECG is achieved by carrying out an orthonormal projection of the recordings onto the estimated fetal subspace. The proposed scheme was evaluated with multichannel synthetic ECG signals …

An Improved Digital Image Watermarking Scheme Using The Discrete Fourier Transform And Singular Value Decomposition, Justin Varghese, Saudia Subash, Omer Bin Hussain, Krishnan Nallaperumal, Mohammed Ramadan Saady, Mohamed Samiulla Khan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The paper presents an improved digital image watermarking algorithm by incorporating the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and singular value decomposition (SVD). The Fourier transformed carrier image is decomposed into four different frequency subbands by the proposed onion peel decomposition (OPD) algorithm and the SVD-based watermarking scheme is applied to attach the transformed watermark in all four carrier subbands. The proposed inverse OPD algorithm together with inverse DFT is utilized to reconstruct the watermarked image from the frequency blocks. The watermark extraction algorithm is simple and it performs the inverse of watermarking process. The experimental analysis on different images shows that …

A 0.18-$\Mu $M Current-Mode Asynchronous Sigma-Delta Modulator Design, Balkir Kayaalti, Ömer Ceri̇d, Günhan Dündar Jan 2016

A 0.18-$\Mu $M Current-Mode Asynchronous Sigma-Delta Modulator Design, Balkir Kayaalti, Ömer Ceri̇d, Günhan Dündar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study a first-order asynchronous current-mode sigma-delta modulator has been designed and simulated. Asynchronous sigma-delta modulators eliminate the continuous time sigma-delta modulator's problem of signal-to-noise ratio degradation due to clock jitter by avoiding the use of sampling in the modulator loop. Moreover, they provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio even with low-order filters. Thus, considerably low power consumption can be achieved with fewer circuit components. The current mode enables designers to scale the circuits according to different supply voltages and operating currents. In this work, design steps for an asynchronous sigma-delta modulator have been given taking into account its ideal …

The Classification Of Eeg Signals Using Discretization-Based Entropy And The Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Mahmut Heki̇m Jan 2016

The Classification Of Eeg Signals Using Discretization-Based Entropy And The Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Mahmut Heki̇m

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A novel feature extraction called discretization-based entropy is proposed for use in the classification of EEG signals. To this end, EEG signals are decomposed into frequency subbands using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), the coefficients of these subbands are discretized into the desired number of intervals using the discretization method, the entropy values of the discretized subbands are calculated using the Shannon entropy method, and these are then used as the inputs of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The equal width discretization (EWD) and equal frequency discretization (EFD) methods are used for the discretization. In order to evaluate their …

In this paper a simple and efficient heuristic search method based on the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is presented and used for the optimal power flow (OPF) problem in power systems with static VAR compensator (SVC) devices. The total generation cost of a power system with SVC devices (which improve the voltage stability at load buses) is optimally minimized with the use of ABC. The ABC, which is based on the foraging behavior of honey bees searching for the best food source, is a recently proposed optimization algorithm. The performance of the presented ABC algorithm was tested and verified …

Improving The Srf Method To Compensate Low-Order Harmonics Under Nonsinusoidal Network Voltages, Javad Modarresi, Mehdi Fallah, Eskandar Ghokipour, Mohammad Tavakoli Bina Jan 2016

Improving The Srf Method To Compensate Low-Order Harmonics Under Nonsinusoidal Network Voltages, Javad Modarresi, Mehdi Fallah, Eskandar Ghokipour, Mohammad Tavakoli Bina

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Increasing the application of power in electronic devices has increased the harmonics in power systems. Numerous methods like the synchronous reference frame (SRF) and the p-q-based method have been suggested to overcome the effects of these harmonics. The conventional SRF method provides acceptable results in harmonic compensation of high-order harmonics (higher than the fourth order), but the transient response time will be drastically increased in the presence of low-order harmonics due to the existence of a conventional low-pass filter. Furthermore, if the load terminal voltages are distorted, then the conventional SRF method will become unable to implement load current compensation. …

An Improved Real-Time Adaptive Kalman Filter With Recursive Noise Covariance Updating Rules, Iyad Hashlamon, Kemaletti̇n Erbatur Jan 2016

An Improved Real-Time Adaptive Kalman Filter With Recursive Noise Covariance Updating Rules, Iyad Hashlamon, Kemaletti̇n Erbatur

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Kalman filter (KF) is used extensively for state estimation. Among its requirements are the process and observation noise covariances, which are unknown or partially known in real-life applications. Uncertain and biased values of the covariances result in KF performance degradation or divergence. Unlike previous methods, we are using the idea of the recursive estimation of the KF to develop two recursive updating rules for the process and observation covariances, respectively designed based on the covariance matching principles. Each rule has a tuning parameter that enhances its flexibility for noise adaptation. The proposed adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) proves itself to …
