Heavy metals are one of the most persistent and prevalent contaminants in the aquatic environment. The removal of chromium from aqueous solution, especially in the hexavalent form is difficult. New technologies, techniques and/or new materials have been designed in order to effectively and efficiently remove chromium from the aqueous environment. The project focuses on the comparison of the effects of pH, time, temperature, binding capacity on bio-char’ generated from agricultural waste produces vs an amino modified derivative of the bio-char. Remediation Of Trivalent And Hexavalent Chromium Ions From Aqueous Solutions Using Titanium Dioxide Polymorphs, Yvette Cantu

Three titanium dioxide (TiO2) polymorphs were synthesized and used for the removal of chromium (III) and chromium (VI) from aqueous solutions. Various solution parameters were studied to determine the effects of pH, temperature, time, possible interfering ions, and capacities on the binding of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) to all three polymorphs. pH assays determined the optimum pH for the binding of both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) to each polymorph. Adsorption isotherms determined that the adsorption of Cr(III) was non-spontaneous for the three polymorphs with ΔG values ranging from 6.03 to 12.89 kJ/mol. Heavy metal contamination in water solutions has been a major concern since many transition metals don’t play a role in any biological function and are actually detrimental to human health. There have been several techniques that have been implemented for the remediation of heavy metal contaminants. For this project, three metal sulfides—Fe7S8, ZnS, TiS 2—were synthesized and studied for their capabilities to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II) from water solutions. Several parameters were investigated to determine the effects of pH, time, temperature, binding capacities, and interfering ions. My dissertation research has focused on the development of ambient ionization – mass spectrometry (MS) for clinical measurements, specifically intrasurgical cancer detection. The molecular differences between normal and cancerous tissue were detected via direct tissue analysis in vitro by touch spray ionization (TS) or by analyzing sectioned or smeared tissue using desorption electrospray ionization (DESI). The physical form of the tissue, e.g. in vitro sampling, sectioned, or smeared, was inconsequential in differentiating normal from cancerous tissue; however, the spectra acquired by TS and DESI differed due to differences in ionization processes. Interest in application of flavonoids for chronic disease prevention has grown significantly, but the low oral bioavailability of these compounds from acute doses is commonly highlighted as a limitation when considering their biological significance. Organic matter (OM) in the environment acts as a nutrient, but may also act as a transport vector for harmful chemical compounds and bacteria. Acetate is a labile form of OM produced during fermentation in anaerobic lagoons used to store animal fecal-waste from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Dry and liquid fertilizers from CAFOs pose a threat to groundwater by introducing excessive amounts of nutrients (e.g. OM, nitrate and ammonia), metals, and antibiotic compounds. Nanomaterials MnO2 and Mn3O4 were synthesized using a titration/precipitation technique and characterized with powder XRD. A pH assay determined the optimum binding for cobalt and nickel occurred at pH 5 for both nanomaterials. A time dependency study determined that cobalt and nickel required more time with MnO2 for maximum adsorption than Mn3O4. The binding capacity study showed cobalt and nickel have good binding capacity with both nanomaterials. Interfering ion assay in the presence of Na+ , Ca2+ and Mg2+ showed minimal difference in the adsorption of cobalt and nickel to MnO2 or Mn3O4. Cobalt and nickel showed a reduction in …

The oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) to dibenzothiophene-sulfone has been considered as an alternate method to remove sulfur from crude oil. This study demonstrates that the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of DBT to DBT-sulfone occurs using WO3 as a catalyst. WO3 was synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction to determine the phase of WO3. Each reaction was refluxed and run for four hours using WO3 as a catalyst, dibenzothiphene, and four different solvents: decahydronapthalene, n-dodecane, decalin, and dodecane. The reactions were performed at temperatures ranging from 120 oC to 150 oC. Aliquots were taken at 30 minutes for up to four hours …

Nano-sized Fe3O4, Fe2O3, Mn3O4, and MnO2 were synthesized by titration/precipitation and characterized using powder XRD. pH assays determined that optimum binding occurred at pH 4 for Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 and pH 3 for Mn3O4 and MnO2. Maximum adsorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II) occurred within 20 min or less of contact with the nanomaterials. The synthesized nanomaterials showed a binding preference for Pb(II) over Cu(II) at concentrations above 50 ppm. Batch studies also showed no significant reduction in the binding of copper and lead to either Fe3O4, Fe2O3, Mn3O4, or MnO2 in the presence of Na+ , K+ , Mg2+ or …

Adenylyl cyclase isoforms are distinctly modulated by G protein subunits and are therefore hypothesized to be uniquely regulated by proteins that influence G protein signaling. Activator of G protein signaling 3 (AGS3) is a G protein modulator that binds Gαi subunits in the GDP-bound state, implicating AGS3 as an important regulatorof Gi-coupled receptor signaling. We studied the ability of AGS3 to modulate recombinant adenylyl cyclase(AC) type 1 and 2 signaling in HEK293 cells following both acute and persistent activation of the D 2Ldopamine receptor (D2L DR). The shift to concentrated animal production facilities and increasing rural-urban migration has increased the localized land application of nearly 1 billion tons of manure and biosolids annually. Although these applications provide nutrients and contribute to soil tilth, they also serve as a source for an estimated 49 tons of the natural manure-borne estrogens, 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), and estrone (E1). While these estrogens are critical to endocrine systems, the low concentrations observed in the environment can disrupt endocrine function in non-target organisms, e.g., altering secondary sex characteristics which can lead to changes in wildlife communities.

Targeting the anticancer agents selectively to cancer cells is desirable to improve the efficacy and to reduce the side effects of anticancer therapy. Previously reported passive tumor targeting by PEGylated liposomes (stealth liposomes) have resulted in their higher tumor accumulation. However their interaction with cancer cells has been minimal due to the steric hindrance of the PEG coating. This dissertation reports two approaches to enhance the interaction of stealth liposomes with cancer cells. Studies were conducted to investigate the use of spectral reflectance by foliage of common sunflower as a potential indicator of arsenic contamination of soil. Germination method was developed for sunflower seeds, and cohorts of sunflower seedlings in hydroponic tanks were established. The cohorts were exposed to 0 ppm, 5 ppm, 7.5 ppm, and 10 ppm treatments of As (V) and reflectance measurements of foliage were collected using a spectroradiometer during two experiments.Results demonstrated the feasibility of using spectral reflectance by foliage of common sunflower as a potential indicator of arsenic contamination. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can cause a major environmental concern since they create a hazard to public health and the environment. This study focused on determining concentration of VOCs in Arroyo Colorado waters and the Lower Laguna Madre (LLM) utilizing GC/MS. Little is known on the concentration and composition of VOCs. Toluene was the most common VOC. Concentrations ranged from 0.0010 mg/L to 0.0039 mg/L. Analysis of a sediment pore water sample collected near the mouth of the Arroyo Colorado also detected toluene (0.0023 mg/L). This study showed that VOCs were concentrated near the county boat launch and somewhat downstream. …
