Properties And Applications Of Tetraalkylphosphonium Alkylsulfate Ionic Liquids And 3d Printed Polymerized Ionic Liquids, Mustafa Mohammed Alhussain

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Ionic liquids (ILs) are defined as pure salts with a melting temperature below 100 °C with a subset called room-temperature ILs (RTILs) with melting temperatures at or below room temperature. The sizes of the cation and anion play a critical role in determining the properties, with smaller ions forming stronger ionic forces and packing better, raising viscosity and lowering conductivity of the IL. At the same time, intermolecular forces such as van der Waals and hydrogen bonding can play a role in IL properties as well. Our research described herein is focused on three tetraalkylphosphonium-based cations coupled with three alkylsulfate …

Multifunctional Microgels For Nanoparticle-Based Detection Methodologies, Alyson Silva Jan 2019

Multifunctional Microgels For Nanoparticle-Based Detection Methodologies, Alyson Silva

WWU Graduate School Collection

In this study, pH-responsive microgel particles, comprised of 2-vinyl pyridine (P2VP) and styrene (PS), are explored as scaffolds to assemble metallic nanoparticles (NPs) for ultrasensitive detection strategies. Microgel particles serve as size-tunable scaffolds to assemble metal (silver or gold) NPs for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) vibrational spectroscopy. The high sensitivity of SERS arises from the enormous enhancement of the Raman scattering cross sections of molecules adsorbed to roughened metal surfaces, such as metal NPs. Using a sterically stabilized latex of random copolymers of PS and P2VP (PSxP2VPy), this polymer is capable of transitioning to a microgel state through acid-base titration. …

Plant Stimuli-Responsive Biodegradable Polymers For The Use In Timed Release Fertilizer Coatings, Spencer Heuchan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The use of nitrogen-based fertilizers continues to accelerate with human population growth and increases in global food requirements. Enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) have been developed to improve the synchronization between nutrient supply and crop nutrient demand. However, many of the current controlled release fertilizers are coated with non-degradable polymers that contribute to accumulation of microplastics within ecosystems. This thesis describes research towards the development of a new class of fertilizer coatings using a self-immolative polymer known as poly (ethyl glyoxylate) (PEtG). PEtG itself does not have suitable properties to produce a viable coating but once blended with another degradable polyester …

Evaluation Of Cafo Dairy Manure Treatment To Reduce Nutrient Transport, Jenna Laib Apr 2018

Evaluation Of Cafo Dairy Manure Treatment To Reduce Nutrient Transport, Jenna Laib

Honors Projects

Excess amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen flowing into Lake Erie from agricultural fields in Northwest Ohio has led to several harmful algal blooms (HABs). One potential source of those nutrients is manure applied to fields for fertilizer. Manure from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) is 95-98% water with only ~3% solids and nutrients, thus physical transportation is expensive relative to the value of the agricultural nutrients. Furthermore, once manure nutrients are applied to agricultural fields, they are relatively easily mobilized to waterways by precipitation. More than 800 lab-scale tests have been used to optimize the treatment of CAFO manure with …

Characterization Of Polymers Containing Ferrocene And Imidazole With Density Functional Theory, Eric Mullins Apr 2018

Characterization Of Polymers Containing Ferrocene And Imidazole With Density Functional Theory, Eric Mullins

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Electrochemical and UV-Vis studies on these polymers in the presence of aqueous solutions containing metal ions have revealed significant modifications in the electrochemical properties and absorption spectra. These modifications in electrochemical properties could be attributed to the ability of the imidazole to coordinate with metal ions, increasing its electron deficiency and enhancing oxidization of the nearby ferrocene moiety if it is in close proximity with imidazole. However, the mechanism of interaction between the imidazole and metal ions, as well as the equilibrium geometry of the resulting polymer-metal ion complex is unknown.

In this thesis, density functional theory (DFT) was used …

Creating Renewable Tunable Polymers From Hydroxymethylfurfural, Meredith C. Allen Aug 2017

Creating Renewable Tunable Polymers From Hydroxymethylfurfural, Meredith C. Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research here deals with the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into a tunable polymer. HMF is a known derivative that can be acquired from biomass via hydrolysis of cellulose followed by isomerization and finally selective dehydration. The process considered here is being developed to create tunable polymers from HMF and involves several different steps, three of which are covered here. The first step, an etherification, is the reaction of HMF with an alcohol. This step is significant because in this step the R-group from the alcohol is added to HMF and the branching portion formed is carried over to the …

Conversion Of Cafo Manure Into A Slow-Release Fertilizer, Richard Allan Williams Iii May 2016

Conversion Of Cafo Manure Into A Slow-Release Fertilizer, Richard Allan Williams Iii

Honors Projects

Alginate polymer is known to form gel through the process of Ionotropic gelation. By use of extrusion and diffusion setting manure was encapsulated into gel beads. These beads were then tested to determine their potential for further testing as a manure treatment process. From the limited data in this preliminary study, it appears as though there is potential for further testing of alginate beads as a treatment process for manure. The treatment is potentially valuable because of the ease of filtration of the alginate beads, the low cost of transportation of the dehydrated beads, and because the limited data suggests …

Polymerization Of Blocked Isocyanate Functional Polymer Surfaces And Post-Polymerization Modification By Thiol-Isocyanate Reactions, Chase A. Tretbar May 2015

Polymerization Of Blocked Isocyanate Functional Polymer Surfaces And Post-Polymerization Modification By Thiol-Isocyanate Reactions, Chase A. Tretbar

Honors Theses

Direct polymerization of isocyanate-functional monomers has been achieved with controlled radical polymerizations (CRP) for precisely engineered modification platforms with highly reactive side chains. However, despite the success of these strategies, the inherent reactivity of isocyanates still leads to adverse side reactions, such as hydrolysis, that are difficult to suppress. Phenol, lactam, and oxime-based blocking agents have been used to limit the reactivity of isocyanates in applications such as multicomponent urethane coating systems. The reactivity of these blocked isocyanates can be restored by thermal deprotection of the blocking agent to achieve the desired reactions. In this work, we use blocked isocyanate-functional …
