Oxidation Of Cyclohexene With Aqueous Potassium Peroxymonosulfate At Ph < 1.7, Wen-Qing Sun
Oxidation Of Cyclohexene With Aqueous Potassium Peroxymonosulfate At Ph < 1.7, Wen-Qing Sun
Theses
Glycols are often used as starting materials for pharmaceuticals. They are currently manufactured by reacting alkenes with organic peroxy acids in organic solutions that contain chlorinated solvents. The aim of this research is to find ways to avoid the use of hazardous organic solvents in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals in order to prevent pollution. Our approach is to find alternative synthetic methods using water as solvent.
Based on literature information, it was decided to determine if the aqueous potassium peroxymonosulfate oxidation of water-immiscible cyclohexene at room temperature can be scaled up to become a new method to manufacture glycols. Acidic …

Catalytic Oxidation Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons Over Powdered Transition Metal Oxide, Sanmei Xu
Catalytic Oxidation Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons Over Powdered Transition Metal Oxide, Sanmei Xu
Theses
This study addresses the ability of powdered transition metal oxides such as manganese oxide, iron oxide and copper oxide to catalytically oxidize low concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons with air. The catalytic oxidation of trichloroethylene and dichloromethane in a tubular reactor system was evaluated experimentally as a function of temperature and space velocity. Gas chromatography with electron capture detector and flame ionization detector was used for quantitative analysis of feed and product streams. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to identify all oxidation products. The results indicate that over 99% conversion of trichloroethylene is achieved at …
Purification And Analysis Of Protein Synthetic Initiation Factors From Volvox Carteri, Kathie L. Pooler
Purification And Analysis Of Protein Synthetic Initiation Factors From Volvox Carteri, Kathie L. Pooler
Honors Theses
Volvox carteri, a multi-celled green algae, can grow synchronously given a sixteen hour light period followed by an eight hour dark period, a cycle which is repeated for a 48 hour growth cycle total. Near the end of each light period, reproductive cells divide rapidly resulting in the differentiation of ceIls. When the dark period begins, this differentiation stops and the cells remain dormant with little protein synthesis or differentiation occurring. Immediately after the lights come back on, however, the cells again undergo rapid protein synthesis and complete their differentiation. Previous studies have concluded that Volvox carteri discontinue protein synthesis …
Investigations Of Iron Cycling In Aquatic Systems, Heather A. Lounsbury
Investigations Of Iron Cycling In Aquatic Systems, Heather A. Lounsbury
Honors Theses
A fully automated luminal-based chemiluminescence flow injection analysis system has been developed for rapid detection of Fe(IT) at natural levels in natural water systems. Similar detection limits are achieved for H202 by fluorometry using an enzyme mediated oxidation of the reagent p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. Using these analytical systems, the rates of Fe(IT) oxidation by dissolved oxygen in 0.7 M NaO have been measured for nanomolar concentrations of Fe(II) over the pH range 7.0 to 8.3. When the production and decomposition of H202 in the system were considered, measured rates were in excellent agreement with a model based on previously reported rate …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Binuclear And Unsymmetrical Phthalocyanines, Jiang Yang
Doctoral Dissertations
"The metal free planar binuclear phthalocyanines sharing a benzene or naphthalene ring have been synthesized and characterized. The position of Q band of binuclear phthalocyanine sharing a naphthalene ring is red shifted compared to binuclear phthalocyanine sharing a benzene ring. The compounds are shown to form the liquid crystal mesophases at room temperature.
The unique unsymmetrical phthalocyanines with steric hindrance tetraphenyl or “opposite” octaphenyl substitution have been synthesized with the aid of computer modeling. The compounds are characterized by UV-visible near IR absorption and NMR spectroscopy. Mesophase is observed by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry.
The aggregation behavior has …

Studies Directed Toward The Synthesis Of Germacranolides Via [2+2] Cycloaddition Followed By Ring Expansion/Elimination Of Β-Lactones, Bryan E. Yates
Masters Theses
Exposure of α-trimethylsilyl β-lactones to magnesium bromide or boron trifluoride etherate in diethyl ether solvent resulted in the smooth generation of β,γ-unsaturated acid derivatives in good yield and isomeric purity. It is believed that this reaction occurs via the formation of a stable tertiary carbocation at the γ-carbon resulting from cleavage of the carbon-oxygen sigma bond due to the complexation of the Lewis acid with the ring oxygen atom. Rapid loss of an adjacent electrofuge then furnishes the unsaturated acids. The β-lactone precursors were prepared by a [2+2] cycloaddition of an aldehyde and an alkyl trimethylsilyl ketene. This method was …
Macroporous Polymer Synthesis And Characterization: The Role Of Molecular Recognition In The Regioselectivity Of Sucrose Reactions, Gilbert Joshua Matare
Macroporous Polymer Synthesis And Characterization: The Role Of Molecular Recognition In The Regioselectivity Of Sucrose Reactions, Gilbert Joshua Matare
Masters Theses
Molecular recognition has recently emerged as a unique technique for making synthetic polymers with selective binding cavities which can stereoselectively and regioselectively bind to a template molecule in a fashion similar to natural enzymes and antibodies. Its industrial applications in chemistry and biomedicine have been recently exploited. Typical examples include the resolution of amino acids, enantio-separation of racemates and bioactive molecules, selective binding of metal ions and in HPLC investigations. Our research is focused on applying molecular recognition studies to improve the regioselectivity of sucrose reactions.
Sucrose is an abundant industrial raw material of immense industrial importance however, its full …
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Ruii(Bpy){(Bpyrm)Ruii(Nh3)4}2](Pf6)6 And [Ruii(Bpy)2(Bpyrm)Ruii(Nh3)4](Pf6)4, Rick Anthony Pavinato
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Ruii(Bpy){(Bpyrm)Ruii(Nh3)4}2](Pf6)6 And [Ruii(Bpy)2(Bpyrm)Ruii(Nh3)4](Pf6)4, Rick Anthony Pavinato
Masters Theses
This thesis describes the synthesis of a trimetallic RuII complex [RuII(bpy){(bpyrm)RuII(NH3)4}2](PF6)6 and its bimetallic analog [RuII(bpy)2(bpyrm)RuII(NH3)4](PF6)4. The trimetallic species was designed to be the first in a series of complexes where the reduction potential of the "bridging" complex could be varied (relative to the "terminal" sites) through systematic variation in the metal (M) and/or ligand (LL) … Generation of the [RuII-MII-RuIII] "mixed-valence" complex would then allow …
Carbonyl Homologation Via Α-Trimethylsilyl Β-Lactone Rearrangement: A Nonbasic Wittig Alternative, Yong Zhang
Carbonyl Homologation Via Α-Trimethylsilyl Β-Lactone Rearrangement: A Nonbasic Wittig Alternative, Yong Zhang
Masters Theses
Our research group has been interested in β-lactones as useful synthetic intermediates. Transformations of β-lactones, generally ring expansion/opening processes initiated by Lewis acids via ionization/cation-rearrangement or elimination mechanisms, provide efficient protocols for the syntheses of biologically important butyrolactones, β,γ-unsaturated carboxylic acids, or butenolides.
α-Trimethylsilyl β-lactones, synthesized via the BF3- catalyzed [2+2] cycloaddition of trimethylsilylketene to carbonyl compounds, spontaneously undergo ionization and trimethylsilyl group migration to form α,β-unsaturated trimethylsilyl esters. The trimethylsilyl moiety facilitates the ionization process because of its β-cation stabilizing ability. The two-carbon homologated α,β-unsaturated acids are formed in yields from moderate to high (41-99%) upon aqueous …
Kinetic And Chemical Modification Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From E. Coli, Fang Jenny Zhao
Kinetic And Chemical Modification Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From E. Coli, Fang Jenny Zhao
Masters Theses
Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) is the enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of malate to oxaloacetate in the TCA cycle. The object of this research was to discipher the mechanism of the reaction and the function of the enzyme. MDH from E. Coli was purified and analyzed by chemical modification studies using diethylpyrocarbonate. Results indicate the existence of a histidine residue at the active site necessary for catalysis. From kinetic studies, a group required for catalysis with a pKa of 8.5 was observed, which we believe to be a histidine residue. These studies indicate that MDH from E. Coli has a …

Physical And Mechanical Behavior Of Amorphous Poly(Arylene Ether-Co-Imidazole)S And Poly(Arylene Ether-Co-Imidazole) Modified Epoxies, Patricia D. Roberts-Mcdaniel
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Due to the high crosslink density of cured epoxy resins they generally lack damage tolerance. A significant amount of research has been expended to improve the toughness of epoxies. Research into the area of thermoplastic epoxy modifiers has begun to overcome some of the limitations of early methods of epoxy toughening (i.e. lower modulus and thermal stability).;This study examines the physical and mechanical properties of random poly(arylene ether-co-imidazole) (PAE-co-Is) and the characterization of epoxies modified with poly(arylene ether-co-imidazole)s.;Poly(arylene ether-co-imidazole)s exhibited the highest solubility in N,N,N{dollar}\rm\sp\prime,N\sp\prime,{dollar}-tetraglycidyl- 4,4{dollar}\sp\prime{dollar} diaminodiphenyl methane (TGMDA) based resins. Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
$\sp2$H-NMR is a powerful spectroscopic technique for investigating dynamics in solids. to extend the range of motional rates that can be quantitatively investigated, a new approach for measuring the quadrupolar spin-lattice relaxation time $T\sb{1Q}$ was developed. This uses a Broadband Jeener-Broekaert (BBJB) sequence with echo-detection, which avoids the frequency-discriminated excitation profile and spectral baseline distortion intrinsic to the conventional Jeener-Broekaert (JB) experiment. By combining the BBJB experiment with an Inversion-Recovery sequence with Quadrupole-Echo detection (IRQE), two independent longitudinal relaxation times, $T\sb{1Q}$ and $T\sb{1Z}$, can be measured. Spectral densities of motion $J\sb1(\omega\sb{o}$) and $J\sb2(2\omega\sb{o}$) are extracted from these relaxation times. The …

Studies Of Silica As A Polymer Support For Regioselective Reactions On Sucrose, Lei Cheng
Studies Of Silica As A Polymer Support For Regioselective Reactions On Sucrose, Lei Cheng
Masters Theses
Sucrose is a material that has potential for replacing oil as an industrial feedstock, at least in some instances. A major difficulty in utilizing sucrose is the lack of regioselectivity in its reactions due to the many reactive sites on the sucrose molecule.
This research is part of an attempt to study the technique of molecular recognition in an effort to increase reaction regioselectivity. Molecular recognition by template imprinting should be a way to create a material that would "recognize" and bind to sucrose in such a way as to block certain of the hydroxyl groups on the sucrose. The …
