Proton spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) of water in aqueous solutions of ferrous and ferric ions and in the corresponding agarose gel systems have been studied in the light of NMR relaxation theory. The theoretical analysis of 1/T1's has revealed that, at the microscopic level, changes in the solvation states of paramagnetic ions in aqueous or gel environment are greater than difference in the paramagnetism between ferric and ferrous ions. The former change is the primary factor for the exhibition of radiation effect. At the phenomenological level, we have confirmed and demonstrated that: (1) Radiation effect is …

Proofreading, editing, and critique, the customary assessment tools scientists use to evaluate professional journal articles, grant applications, and any other writing, can be applied equally well in introductory science instruction. Such feedback is, in fact, crucial to growth and development. When learning anything new, students and faculty alike rely heavily on sources other than themselves (‘external editors’) to assess their understanding as they develop self-assessment skills (or ‘internal editors’). The structurally related glycopeptide antibiotics vancomycin, ristocetin A, and teicoplanin can all be used as chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis (CE). Both experimental and modeling studies were done to elucidate their similarities and differences. There are identifiable morphological differences in the aglycon macrocyclic portions of these three compounds. In addition, there are other structural distinctions that can affect their CE enantioselectivity, migration times, and efficiency. Teicoplanin is the most distinct of the three and is the only one that is surface active. Its aggregational properties appear to affect its enantioselectivity among other things. Directed ortho-metalation (DoM) is a very useful alternative to electrophillic aromatic substitution (EAS) for the synthesis of substituted aromatic compounds. DoM is highly regiospecific providing metalation chiefly in the ortho-position. However, lateral (a-) metalation of an alkyl side-chain and ortho-metalation of a second ortho-position can compete. Investigation of the three methylanisoles was therefore undertaken to determine the interplay between these factors and to discover metalation conditions to achieve selectivity. This goal was uniquely achieved for p-methylanisole where conditions were discovered which allowed > 85% ortho-metalation as determined by GC analysis with virturally no competing lateral metalation. This study evaluates the thermal and oxidative stabilities of a bismaleimide (BMI) polymer composite reinforced with an intermediate modulus graphite fiber, Cytec®5260/IM7. The composite is aged in helium, nitrogen, and air at elevated temperatures up to 600°C. Its weight change is followed thermogravimetrically for stability assessment. The effect of aging gas environment is also studied. The use of on-line gas cell fourier transform IR spectrometer (FTIR) and mass spectrometer (MS) allows for the identification of decomposition products by evolved gas analysis. The organic compounds found adsorbed on coal fly ash have been a cause for concern since the early days of the industrial revolution. A vast majority of the compounds reported as being adsorbed on the ash are polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study represents an attempt to evaluate the parameters involved in the extraction, detection and quantitation of these organic compounds. Six samples of Ce2Fe17-xGax with nominal Ga content x equal to 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 2.0 have been studied by powder neutron diffraction at room temperature. Both crystalline and magnetic refinements have been carried out. All six samples adopt the Th2Zn17-type rhombohedral structure. The only additional phase found is α-iron. Gallium atoms are found to have high affinity for the iron 18h site, and are absent from the 9d and 18f sites. The Ga substitution for Fe leads to an expansion of both the a and c axes. The Curie …

The azimuthal angular correlations of light charged particles and light intermediate mass fragments emitted from the reaction 36Ar+197Au at E/A=50MeV are found to be reducible to the angular distributions of individual fragments. Thermal scaling is also observed in the coefficients of the angular correlations. Furthermore, the observed scaling with fragment mass seems to imply secondary emission from relatively small ( A≈15–30) primary fragments.

Results on the application of high-temperature supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (HT-SFE) to the study of hydrocarbon (HC) speciation in geological samples are presented. Ancient sediments were treated by stepwise extractions, and by using a fresh sample each time. SFE temperatures ranged between 50 and 350°C. Individual analytes showed to be speciated in different ways throughout the solid matrix because different fractions are extracted under different energy conditions. Aromatic HCs appear to have a stronger association with the matrix than the aliphatics due to their higher polarity and molecular planarity. No evidence of geosynthesis of alkylaromatics during HT-SFE was obtained. Tri- …

Model amphiphiles consisting of lines of Lennard-Jones (LJ) centers are investigated to determine the effect of pressure and molecular geometry on ground-state tilting behavior. Both the amphiphile length and the intramolecular distance between LJ centers is varied. The results give guidelines for understanding and controlling tilting behavior in monolayer films.

The diversity of native plant species in urban environments is usually overlooked when biodiversity levels are considered. Inventories of native plants reveal many to be rare species surviving the harsh conditions encountered in urban ecosystems. Knowledge of their existence and an inventory of their distribution will assist in maintaining these populations. Protection strategies for rare plant species are outlined for urban National Parks.

Purpose: Contrast-enhanced proton magnetic resonance imaging ( 1H MRI) has been used as a quantitative, noninvasive method to corroborate a pathway for the diffusion of plasma-derived protein into the aqueous humor in the normal rabbit eye. Methods. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were produced over 1- to 3-hour periods after the intravenous injection of gadolinium diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid. Results. Analysis of the images yielded the time dependence of signal enhancements within the areas of interest. The ciliary body showed an immediate sharp increase, followed by a gradual decrease in signal enhancement with time. Although a gradual increase in signal enhancement was found …

The effect of perturbing the icosohedral symmetry of C60 by the addition of the side groups -O and -CH2 upon orientational order-disorder and glass transitions in solid C60 has been studied by a combination of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry and single-crystal x-ray and powder inelastic neutron scattering. Both fullerene derivatives C60O (epoxide) and C61H2 (6,5-annulene) are shown to undergo a sequence of transitions similar to that found in pure C60, i.e., a first-order orientational ordering transition just below room temperature followed by an orientational glass transition at lower temperatures. The dinucleating ligand ethylene glycol−bis(β-aminoethyl ether) N,N,N‘,N‘-tetrakis[(2-(1-ethylbenzimidazoyl)] (EGTB-Et; 1) was used to synthesize the dinuclear Ni(II) tetraacetonitrile complex cation [Ni2(EGTB-Et)(CH3CN)4]2+ (2):  triclinic space group P1̄ (a = 12.273(5) Å, b = 12.358(7) Å, c = 12.561(6) Å, α = 90.43(4)°, β = 110.26(3)°, γ = 99.21 (4)°, and Z = 1). N-Trifluoroacetyl α-vinyl amino esters are smoothly converted to the corresponding α-chlorovinyl or α-bromovinyl amino esters through the agency of phenyselenyl chloride or phenylselenyl bromide, respectively, followed by oxidation and pyrolysis. Exclusively the (E)-extemal halovinyl isomer and the internal halovinyl isomer are observed. The amino protecting group is a critical determinant of the reaction course (alkene addition vs. 5-exo-trig-like cyclization).

We have studied the aggregation of the porphyrin t-H₂Pagg in aqueous solution by light scattering. The intensity profile of the elastically scattered light, studied in the exchanged wave-vector range 0.2 ≤ q ≤ 31.4 μ m⁻¹, indicates that the aggregation produces large monodisperse clusters having a fractal structure, and is driven by diffusion-limited aggregation kinetics. Additional measurements performed at different q values confirm such a picture giving a hydrodynamic radius R(H) consistent with the radius of gyration R(g) measured by elastic scattering. The kinetics and mechanism of cleavage of DNA by the insulin-mimetic peroxo-vanadate NH4[VO(O2)2(phen)], pV, are described. In the presence of low energy UV radiation or biologically common reducing agents, pV decomposes into the monomer, dimer, and tetramer of vanadate and an uncharacterized compound of V4+ as shown by 51V NMR, ESR, and absorption spectra. The rate of photodecomposition of pV is reduced in the presence of calf thymus DNA, indicating that a decomposition product of the peroxo-vanadate, that is important in the destruction pathway of the complex, is interacting with DNA. This species, probably a short-lived complex of V4+, may …

The liquid extraction and spectrophotometric quantitation of uranium from different solid matrices is compared to supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using various combinations of 2,2-dimethyl-6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-3,5-octadione (FOD), tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), ethanol, and carbon dioxide measuring the UV absorption of the uranium-FOD complex. The matrix is shown to have a tremendous effect on the extractability of uranium from different solid matrices. Compared to liquid extraction, the SFE method yields higher recoveries, is significantly faster, is of equal or greater precision, and greatly reduces the amount of organic solvents used. Under mildly oxidizing ultrahigh vacuum conditions, it is possible to form on top of CoO(100) single crystal substrates, thin films that have higher oxygen content but that preserve the overall symmetry of the CoO(100) low-energy electron diffraction pattern. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (HREELS) data indicate that the epitaxial film grown on CoO(100) at 625 K and 531027 Torr is Co3O3-like in both oxygen content and XP/HREEL spectroscopic characteristics. Both materials are closest packed in lattice oxygen, with the mismatch of bulk O2-–O2- distances of approximately 5%. However, the Co …

Single crystal MnO(100) substrates can be selectively oxidized to produce Mn2O3- and Mn3O4-like surfaces under mild oxidation/reduction conditions readily accessed under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). MnO(100) yields a characteristic Mn 2p x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) satellite structure and appropriate O/Mn concentrations from O 1s/Mn 2p XPS intensity ratios. Its high resolution electron energy loss (HREEL) spectrum shows a series of Fuchs–Kliewer multiple phonon excitations with a single loss energy of 70.9 meV, characteristic of the cubic manganese monoxide structure. The spatial-temporal extent of the emitting system for central collisions in Kr84 + Au197 at E/A = 35, 55, and 70 MeV is probed using fragment-fragment velocity correlation functions. Selection on fragment pairs of high velocity yields a stronger fragment-fragment Coulomb interaction than for inclusive fragment pairs. This result is consistent with fragment emission from a source of decreased spatial-temporal extent. The universality of this association and the effect of different selection criteria are explored. The sensitivity of the spatial-temporal extent deduced by the correlation function technique to measurement uncertainties, assumed source characteristics, and rotational effects is assessed.

Sulfated zirconia has attracted extensive attention due to its superactivity to isomerize alkane and alkenes. Platinum or iron/manganese promoted sulfated zirconia has been shown to increase the reaction rate. These catalysts are normally activated to 650-725°C in air before use. Through on-line analysis of evolved gas species during dynamic heating of the catalysts, some significant information can be obtained concerning the activation mechanism. In the present investigation, combined TG-FTIR, TG-MS and TGDTA techniques were utilized to measure the weight loss of the samples, analyze the evolved gas species and to monitor the phase transformation temperature of the solid. This study involved the use of a thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) interfaced with a fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and a mass spectrometer (MS) to determine the evolution of hydrogen chloride from coal during combustion as a function of the chlorine content and mesh size of the coal. It was determined that combined TG-FTIR and TG-MS systems offer the user an efficient means to investigate the mechanism of hydrogen chloride evolution from coal combustion. From the HC1 evolution profiles, it was determined that a good correlation exists between the chlorine content in the coal and the total amount of HC1 evolved. …

Epifluorescence microscopy has been used previously to study coexisting liquid phases in lipid monolayers of dihydrocholesterol and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine at the air/water interface. This binary mixture has a critical point at room temperature (22°C), a monolayer pressure of approx. 10 mN/m, and a composition in the vicinity of 20-30 mol% dihydrocholesterol. It is reported here that this critical pressure can be lowered, raised, or maintained constant by systematically replacing molecules of this phosphatidylcholine with molecules of a phosphatidylethanolamine, or an unsaturated phosphatidylcholine, or mixtures of the two, while maintaining the dihydrocholesterol concentration at 20 mol%.
