Despite the inundation of studies on the interaction of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with plants, investigations involving complete life cycle (i.e from seedling establishment to full maturity) are still lacking. Assessments on the nutritional value of plants cultivated to full maturity in ENMs-treated soil are also missing. Peptide-alpha-phenylthioesters are particularly reactive starting materials for Native Chemical Ligation. Here we present a new photochemical method for the synThesis of peptide-alpha-phenylthioesters under neutral reaction conditions with various C-terminal amino acids. The peptides were synthesized by Fmoc strategy on Sieber amide resin with a photoreactive nitroindoline linker. After cleavage of the photoreactive and fully protected peptide from the beads with dilute trifluoroacetic acid an auxiliary nucleophile such as N-hydroxybenzotriazole or N-hydroxysuccinimide is used to photochemically generate the activated peptide ester in situ. A series of fluorophores based in the boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family were synthesized and characterized. These fluorophores have the capacity of being introduced to a carbamoyl methyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) lanthanide/actinide extractant. These blue, green and red emission fluorophores show high thermal/moisture stability and high fluorescence efficiencies. The fluorescence intensity seems to be dependent on the restricted rotation about the C(8)-C bond in 8-Ph-BODIPY. By taking advantage of this feature, a hydroxyl- containing BODIPY with high fluorescence intensity was synthesized to be incorporated to a CMPO carboxylic acid via esterification. Pt(II) complexes of N,N-diphenylpyridineamine or 4-diphenylphosphino derivatized triphenylamine as novel electron donors and alkynyl derivatized benzothiadiazole as electron acceptors were synthesized. All the complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electronspray ionization mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for the complexes of 4-diphenylphosphino derivatives. The electronic properties studied using UV/vis spectroscopy exhibit ᴫ-ᴫ* transition, metal to ligand charge transfer, and optical highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital bandgaps from 2.62-2.65 eV. The aim is to provide insight and predictive understanding into the charge transfer processes of the molecular-level components in donor-acceptor based organic solar cells using computational methods to describe photochemical processes at the quantum mechanical level within the Density Functional Theory (DFT) approximation. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been subjected to chemical treatment in order to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on their surfaces. These covalently bonded groups did enhance the solubility of MWCNTs in aqueous media as expected. Functionalized MWCNTs were characterized using FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, X-ray diffraction, dispersion test and TEM. Sodium sulfate can be recovered from a dilute solution by concentrating it by conventional water treatment techniques like reverse osmosis and electrodialysis; however, those processes also concentrate impurities like arsenic. The sodium sulfate would have commercial use if it can be recovered in an arsenic-free form. This study demonstrated that sodium sulfate could be separated from impurities using slow cooling crystallization in a novel apparatus developed and designed during the experimentation. Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a powerful tool that can be used to model various systems in materials science. Our research applies DFT to two problems of interest. First, an organic/inorganic complex dye system known as a Mayan pigment is modeled to determine chemical binding sites, verifying each model with physical data such as UV/Vis spectra. Preliminary studies on palygorskite-based mayan pigments (mayacrom blue, mayacrom purple) show excellent agreement with experimental studies when using a dimer dye geometry binding with tetrahedrally-coordinated aluminum impurity sites in palygorksite. The reaction of &alpha-cumylpotassium and cyclohexene oxide produces trans-cumylcyclohexanol in high yield in the presence of excess cumene. Reactions of 1.1 and 2.0 equivalents of cumene with one equivalent of n-butylpotassium to make &alpha-cumylpotassium were shown to take several days to reach a maximum yield in the subsequent reaction of &alpha-cumylpotassium and cyclohexene oxide. Although it was initially hypothesized that the high yield was attributed to the interaction of the potassium with the aromatic rings of the &alpha-cumyl anion and the excess cumene, which was confirmed by molecular modeling studies, these reactions demonstrated that no large excess of …

Gemini surfactants are amphiphilic molecules that consist of two surfactant molecules chemically joined together by a spacer group. These molecules tend to self‐assemble into vesicles at much lower concentrations than traditional surfactants and have found many applications in catalysis, adsorption applications, drug‐delivery, nanoscale technology, and biotechnology. Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs), such as household cleaning materials, prescription medication, and personal hygiene products, are pollutants of emerging concern that are found in 80% of our water system. Because of their applications, PPCPs are subsequently being released into wastewater; however, current wastewater treatment facilities are not regulated or designed to remove PPCPs. Therefore, these compounds are discharged into the environment on a continual basis. Chronic childhood lead exposure, yielding blood lead levels consistently below 10 μg/dL, remains a major public health concern. Low neurotoxic effect thresholds have not yet been established. Progress requires accurate, efficient, and cost-effective methods for testing large numbers of children. The LeadCare® System (LCS) may provide one ready option. The comparability of this system to the “gold standard” method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the purpose of detecting blood lead levels below 10 μg/dL has not yet been examined. Over 16 million people in Latin America are infected with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), the causative agent of Chagas disease, and up to 50,000 infected people die annually due to complications during the chronic stage of the disease. To date, there are no vaccines or effective drugs to treat chronic Chagas disease. It is known that T. cruzi contains cell surface mucin-like glycoproteins with terminal α-galactosyl residues, and it is well established that they are highly immunogenic.
