Comparison Of Processed And Non-Processed Biomass Digestion, Richard Bruce Clark Iii
Comparison Of Processed And Non-Processed Biomass Digestion, Richard Bruce Clark Iii
Graduate Theses - Chemistry and Biochemistry
Lignocellulosic ethanol is the main focus of second-generation biofuels [1]. Because cellulose is the most abundant organic material on earth, second-generation biofuels are a more sustainable option than the classical first-generation biofuels that use foodstuffs as the main feedstock in ethanol production [1]. Furthermore, biofuel can be produced not only from unprocessed biomass such as corn husks but also from processed material like paper [1]. Ionic liquids have shown to be quite effective in dissolving naturally occurring, and traditionally insoluble, polymers such as cellulose into solution, and cellulase enzymes have been shown to effectively digest cellulose into simple sugars [2]. …
Pro- And Antioxidant Activity Of Selenomethionine: Preventative Measures Against Metal-Mediated Dna Oxidation, Austin Mroz
Pro- And Antioxidant Activity Of Selenomethionine: Preventative Measures Against Metal-Mediated Dna Oxidation, Austin Mroz
Graduate Theses - Chemistry and Biochemistry
DNA damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been linked to several diseases.
Antioxidants are one method of combating the effects of ROS; selenium-containing antioxidants have shown promise in alleviating in vitro DNA damage. This study aims toelucidate the effects of selenomethionine (SeMet) on DNA damage mediated by Cu(II),Fe(II), or Cr(III) metal ions. HPLC analysis was used to probe the oxidative effects of SeMet by quantifying the oxidative damage marker, 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine. Prior literature indicates that the antioxidant activity of SeMet is potentially concentration dependent; however, HPLC results in this study indicate a metal-ion dependency. In order to better understand the …
Adsorption Kinetics Of Bovine Serum Albumin To Strong Anion Exchange Adsorbents: Application Of The Pore Diffusion Model To Resins And Membranes, Sarah Catherine Jensen
Adsorption Kinetics Of Bovine Serum Albumin To Strong Anion Exchange Adsorbents: Application Of The Pore Diffusion Model To Resins And Membranes, Sarah Catherine Jensen
Graduate Theses - Chemical Engineering
The replacement of traditional bead-based chromatography by membranes has gained recent interest in the bioseparations industry. However, membranes have drawbacks such as lower binding capacity that make them unrealistic for some applications. The goal of this work is to compare the adsorption kinetics of anion exchange bead-based resin and membranes both on a theoretical modeling level and experimental level. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was adsorbed to Q Sepharose FastFlow resin and Sartobind Q membrane to obtain adsorption equilibrium characteristics and kinetic data. A numerical solution was used to fit the pore diffusion model to the data and estimate a pore …
Phosphonium/Phosphate Ionic Liquids As Lubricant Additives: The Synthesis And Testing Of Six Novel Ils, Matthew Scott Welmers
Phosphonium/Phosphate Ionic Liquids As Lubricant Additives: The Synthesis And Testing Of Six Novel Ils, Matthew Scott Welmers
Graduate Theses - Chemistry and Biochemistry
In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) are defined as ionic materials with a melting temperature >100oC. ILs are characterized by their organic moieties which prevent crystallization, forcing the liquid phase. ILs are desirable as lubricant additives because of their ability to be fine-tuned by varying the identity of the cation/anion as well as the various organic functional moieties therein. Several novel phosphonium/phosphate ILs have been successfully synthesized via a simple, straightforward process. In this work a series of symmetric and asymmetric anionic phosphodiesters are developed and coordinated with two asymmetric alkyl phosphonium cations. These ILs are tested in SAE 10W30 …
Antioxidant Mechanisms Of Glutathione Against Metal-Mediated Oxidative Dna Damage, Elias Eteshola
Antioxidant Mechanisms Of Glutathione Against Metal-Mediated Oxidative Dna Damage, Elias Eteshola
Graduate Theses - Chemistry and Biochemistry
Oxidative damage of DNA strands has been strongly linked with the development of diseases such as certain cancers, cystic fibrosis and Parkinson’s, as well as aging. In intercellular reactions involving hydrogen peroxide endogenous metals have been shown to increase the generation of site-specific base modifications through their formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The damage markers measured via HPLC are the 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and the dA-N1 oxide markers. The current study deals with the reduced form of the sulfur antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and elucidating its ameliorating effects against ROS formation. Comparative studies with the known radical-scavenging sulfur antioxidant dimethyl sulfoxide …
Combining Monte Carlo Transport And Level Set Surface Evolution For Modeling Vapor Phase Deposition Of Thin Films Over Sub-Micron Features, John Lewis Smith
Combining Monte Carlo Transport And Level Set Surface Evolution For Modeling Vapor Phase Deposition Of Thin Films Over Sub-Micron Features, John Lewis Smith
Graduate Theses - Chemical Engineering
A hybrid scheme is used to model the vapor phase deposition of thin films at the feature scale. The transport of the chemical species to the substrate surface is modeled with a Collisionless Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The Level Set Method is used to model the growth of the thin-film on the substrate. The convergence criteria for these methods were not found in literature.
The governing equations for the Level Set Method are, in general, non-linear partial differential equations. The coupling of the DSMC Method with the Level Set Method results in a set of non-Gaussian stochastic non-linear …
