Capacity Fading Analyses Of Lini 0.5Co 0.2Mn 0.3O2And Lini 0.5Co 0.2Mn 0.3O2/Lifepo4 Cathode Materials For Lithium-Ion Battery, Yi Hu, Xiang-Zhu He, Zhong-De Deng, Ling-Yong Kong, Wei-Li Shang

The LiNi 0.5Co 0.2Mn 0.3O2/LiFePO4 (NMC532/LFP) composite cathode material for lithium-ion battery was prepared by wet ball-milling. The capacity fading behaviors of LiNi 0.5Co 0.2Mn 0.3O2 (NMC532) and LiNi 0.5Co 0.2Mn 0.3O2/LiFePO4 (NMC532/LFP) were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The results indicated that the capacity retention values of NMC532/LFP were 97.80% and 86.48%, respectively, after 50 cycles and 60℃ high temperature storage. The NMC532/LFP exhibited better cycle performance and high temperature storage performance. …

Speciation of copper in marine systems strongly influences the ability of copper to cause toxicity. Natural organic matter (NOM) contains many binding sites which provides a protective effect on copper toxicity. The purpose of this study was to characterize copper binding with NOM using fluorescence quenching techniques. Fluorescence quenching of NOM with copper was performed on nine sea water samples. The resulting stability con- stants and binding capacities were consistent with literature values of marine NOM, show- ing strong binding with log K values from 7.64 to 10.2 and binding capacities ranging from 15 to 3110 nmole mg C −1 …

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials constructed from virtually endless combinations of metal centres and organic linkers. MOFs have attracted intense research interest in recent decades, since MOFs have outstanding properties such as extremely high surface area, tuneable pore topology, good stability, and many others. MOFs are also promising candidates for gas storage. In this work, solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy has been investigated to study MOFs and their guest molecules, since SSNMR can provide information on the short-range environment about target nuclei and can also reveal the dynamics of guest molecules.

Aerosol, trace gas, and meteorological data were collected in Chicago, Illinois during 2010–2012 summer air studies. Ozone, nitrogen oxides, acetate, formate, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, and oxalate concentrations as well as temperature, wind speed, wind direction, and humidity data were explored by both principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to uncover existing relationships between meteorology and air pollutant concentrations and also reduce data dimensions.

Diamond films are used at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) as the primary charge exchange foils (i.e., stripper foils) of the accelerated 1 GeV (Gigaelectron volts) hydride ions. The most common type of film used is a nanocrystalline diamond film, typically 17 mm x 45 mm (millimeter) with an aerial density of 350 μg/cm2 (microgram per square centimeter). The diamond film is deposited on a corrugated silicon substrate using plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition. The prevailing dogma in structural genomics is the existence of a strong correlation between protein sequence, structure, and biological function. Proteins with high sequence similarity typically have a similar, if not the same, structure and function. In many cases this logic can fail due to distantly related proteins having very low sequence similarity, a lack of a representative structure, structural novelty, or the absence of a characterized function. Improvement in the in vitro oxidative folding of disulfide-containing proteins, such as extracellular and pharmaceutically important proteins, is required. Traditional folding methods using small molecule aliphatic thiol and disulfide, such as glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) are slow and low yielding. Small molecule aromatic thiols and disulfides show great potentiality because aromatic thiols have low pKa values, close to the thiol pKa of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), higher nucleophilicity and good leaving group ability. The growth and self-assembly of molecules on surfaces can be directly visualized at the molecular level using studies which combine nanoscale lithography and high-resolution imaging. Nanopatterning provides a unique and practical approach for direct views of surface changes after the key chemical steps of nanopatterning, providing landmarks and baselines for measuring growth in vertical and lateral dimensions. Controlling the arrangement of materials on surfaces at the nanoscale can be achieved using particle lithography. This dissertation details the development of new fabrication strategies for the preparation of spatially selective surfaces by combining techniques of particle lithography and scanning probe microscopy (SPM). This combination of lithography and nanoscale surface characterization was applied to study the mechanisms of molecular level surface-assembly of organosilanes and porphyrin on surfaces of Si(111). Particle lithography was used to investigate the surface assembly of 4-chloromethylphenyltrichlorosilane (CMPS) within exposed sites of nanoholes in selected solvents and at selected temperatures to gain insight into the details of self-polymerization. Studies have shown that some canines have the ability to predict seizures in people with epilepsy, and that canines can be trained to recognize changes in humans before an epileptic seizure and make these predictions. It is not known with any certainty to what the canines are alerting. However, canines’ exceptional sense of smell and their ability to discriminate human scent is well established. Therefore, it is possible that the canines could be responding to an olfactory cue, such as the release of some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) prior to the onset of a seizure.

The Cytochrome P450 (P450s) has been the subject of intense research for over six decades. An efficient approach for isotopic labeling of the prosthetic group in heme proteins was exploited to produce an analogue of the soluble bacterial cytochrome P450cam (P450cam) that contains a 13C labeled-protoheme prosthetic group. HU227 strain of E. coli, which lacks the δ-aminolevulinic acid (δ-ALA) synthase gene, was employed in the heterologous expression of P450cam harboring a prosthetic group labeled with 13C at the Cm and Cα positions by growing cells in the presence of [5-13C] δ-ALA, which was synthesized in four steps from [2-13C] glycine. …

No relationship has been established between surface wettability and ice growth patterns, although ice often forms on top of solid surfaces. Here, we report experimental observations obtained using a process specially designed to avoid the influence of nucleation and describe the wettability-dependent ice morphology on solid surfaces under atmospheric conditions and the discovery of two growth modes of ice crystals: along-surface and off-surface growth modes. The current work aims to apply HDX-MS to improve the understanding of protein structure and dynamics for systems that remain challenging for other techniques. Following a general overview of the field (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 investigates the relationship between enzyme dynamics and catalysis. Solar energy is free and globally abundant and harnessed cost-effectively, it has the potential to be the world’s main source of energy. CuInGa(S,Se)2 solar cells have a very high efficiency of 20 %. However, gallium is a rare and expensive element. We have decided to work on its alternative CuInSe2 (CISe) and CuInS2 (CIS) by removing gallium or both gallium and selenium. The p-type CISe or CIS light-absorbing semiconducting layer is crucial for this type of solar cell. Abiraterone acetate (AA), the prodrug of abiraterone, is FDA-approved for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer. Abiraterone is metabolized in patients to a more potent analogue, D4A. However, we have recently reported that this analogue is further metabolized to additional metabolites in patients treated with AA. Here, we present a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method developed to resolve and detect abiraterone and its seven metabolites in human serum using an AB Sciex Qtrap 5500 mass analyzer coupled with a Shimadzu Nexera UPLC station. Transition metal carbides and nitrides are attractive materials for electrodes in many electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications. In the present study, we use density functional theory slab calculations to characterize the surface chemical properties of molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) carbides and nitrides, namely, Mo2C, W2C, Mo2N and W2N with the adsorption of CO, CO2 and O2. The work in this dissertation focuses on the development of probes for the analysis of trace chemicals in samples with health and environmental impacts. A paper, Cu(copper)-based colorimetric probe was developed for the detection of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. A modified Kipp’s apparatus was used to generate desired concentrations of H2S in a total volume of 1.35 L (liters). The probe shows a qualitative response down to 60 ppb (parts per billion), indicating its ability to be used in industrial settings as a replacement for the commonly used lead acetate strips. Organic compounds in meteorites were likely transformed by a variety of processes on the asteroid parent body including aqueous, thermal, and radiolytic alteration. Previous studies have identified a suite of purine nitrogen heterocycles in carbonaceous chondrites (a class of meteorites) and determined that their likely origin was due to cyanide chemistry. This study mainly focuses on the fabrication of single one dimensional (1D) NP chains across the 5-micron gap of Au two electrode devices (TED). This has been achieved by electrochemical deposition of Ag onto the two electrodes, soaking the TED in 0.1 M Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide for 2-3 hours, and then close monitoring of the current as a function of time while a voltage across the two Ag coated Au electrodes in air. This dissertation explored and investigated the coreactant electrogenerated chemiluminescent (ECL) properties of unmixed and mixed systems of highly efficient ECL emitters, such as 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA), rubrene (RUB), and tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) [(Ru(bpy)32+)] species as well as their water-soluble derivatives, which can serve as ECL labels for sensitive bioanalysis of single or multiple analytes. In vivo oxygen sensing is a critical area of research for medical applications, such as ischemic stroke, but this important topic is not fully understood or resolved. In addition, the best method for calibration of in vivo sensors is as yet undetermined. Direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) have been reported as a prominent source of alternative green energy and solution to imminent energy crisis for the last two decades. The challenge to commercialize DFAFCs is primarily the utilization of cost effective, high performance and durable anodic catalyst for formic acid oxidation (FAO). Consequently, this dissertation addresses the extensive electrochemical study of a number of nanomaterials towards the potential use as electrocatalysts for FAO. Morphology and elemental analyses of the prepared nanomaterials were obtained using electron microscopy techniques.
