Evaluation Of Chicken Serum And Chicken Egg Yolk As Novel Supplements For The In Vitro Cultivation Of Mycoplasma Hyorhinis, Yi-Chia Li, Sin-Hang Ma, Wei-Hao Lin, Chao-Nan Lin, Ming-Tang Chiou
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Mycoplasma hyorhinis is a significant pathogen in swine, yet its fastidious nutritional requirements present challenges for in vitro cultivation. Conventional supplements like horse serum (HS) often suffer from batch variability and potential inhibitors. This study aimed to evaluate chicken serum (CS) and chicken egg yolk (CY) as novel alternatives to develop a reliable cultivation method for M. hyorhinis. Five clinical isolates were cultured for 10 days in a basal medium supplemented with CS or CY at 10%, 20%, or 30%, with 30% HS as the control. Growth was quantified daily using a Color Changing Unit (CCU) assay. CS supported …

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a world-recognized rare wildlife endemic to China. Oral microorganisms may cause dental and other systemic diseases. Additionally, antibiotic resistance in this cute mammal may spread widely to travelers. In this mini review, we illustrated the oral core microorganisms of the giant pandas and their characteristics, as well as their prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes. Although there is limited availability in panda sample collection, researchers have made great efforts to find the characteristics of the giant pandas’ oral microbiota, including Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococci, with antibiotic resistance genes optrA …
Recovery And Characterization Of Moraxella Species From Bovine Specimens, Laura G. Leger
Recovery And Characterization Of Moraxella Species From Bovine Specimens, Laura G. Leger
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The family Moraxellaceae is made up of a diverse group of 24 named species that fall into three phylogenetic groups. While most Moraxella spp. act as commensal respiratory and/or ocular flora of mammals, some are associated with disease. One of these diseases, infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), has significant welfare and economic impacts to both cattle and cattle producers. Moraxella bovis is the only experimentally determined cause of IBK, however, an association of Moraxella bovoculi with disease has been proposed. Currently, available vaccines do not have high levels of efficacy in the field. Culture based methods are the gold standard for …

Cryptosporidium spp. is the most frequent agent in Algeria that causes neonatal diarrhea in calves, with high symptomatic diarrhea in pre-weaned dairy calves. The study aims to measure the prevalence, distribution, and genotype of Cryptosporidium-infected calves in one of Algeria's high milk production areas (North Central and Northeast). From 35 dairy cattle farms were selected 172 (77 with diarrheic and 95 without diarrheic symptoms) calves aged less than 60 days. Twenty-three farms (65.71%) were detected with cryptosporidiosis using a modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain, whereby 68 calves (39.53%) were obtained positive. The Copro-ELISA test gave an individual prevalence of (37.66%, 22.11%) …

African horse sickness (AHS) is caused by infection with the African horse sickness virus (AHSV). In March 2020, AHS was first reported in Thailand due to the importation of subclinically infected host animals, such as zebras. In this study, we conducted a serological survey for AHSV-specific antibodies across 21 horse farms in the northeastern provinces (n=3) of Thailand. A total of 600 serum samples were collected for cross-sectional (n = 292) and longitudinal serological monitoring (n = 308). A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020, during which serum samples (n = 292) were collected and tested for AHS antibodies using …

nfluenza A viruses (IAVs) can infect birds and various mammals. In this study, we retrospectively isolated and characterized IAVs (n=8) from oropharyngeal and cloacal swab samples of free-grazing ducks collected during December 2018 to December 2021, by using egg inoculation and whole-genome sequencing. The IAVs could be subtyped as IAV-H4N2 (n = 3) and IAV-H4N8 (n = 5) using real-time RT-PCR assays. Genetic and phylogenetic analyses revealed that all eight genes of Thai IAV-H4 belong to the Avian Eurasian lineage. Both Thai IAV-H4N2 and IAV-H4N8 exhibited low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) characteristics and were susceptible to oseltamivir and amantadine. This …
Overcoming Vaccine-Associated Enhanced Respiratory Disease In Swine Flu With Lipid Nanoparticle-Dna Technology, The Nguyen
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The two primary challenges in developing vaccines against swine influenza A virus (IAV-S) are the continuous viral evolution and vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease (VAERD). Current vaccine strategies share a common limitation: the significant time required for licensing updated vaccines. Moreover, the strain selection for vaccine updates depends entirely on predictions, raising the risk that chosen strains may not match circulating viruses. Such mismatches not only reduce vaccine efficacy but also risk exacerbating disease severity through VAERD. Here, in this thesis, we developed and evaluated a novel DNA-based vaccine platform designed to address the need for rapid updates in response to …

The viral disease affects the whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and causes losses. Immunostimulants are recognized as a more environmentally friendly approach to disease management and antimicrobial properties of aquatic organisms. Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is an aquatic plant species that contains antioxidant properties that can protect the organism from disease and boost the immune system. Shrimp rely heavily on innate immunity to combat infectious agents due to their absence of adaptive immunity. Peroxinectin and scavenger receptor class B (SRB) play essential roles in the shrimp defense system. This research employs a bioinformatic to assess the immunostimulatory potential …

Protective antibody against classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is an important parameter used for disease monitoring in CSFV-endemic areas. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a simple and practical serological assay for CSFV antibody detection. However, the use of CSFV ELISAs in CSFV antibody-positive herds, i.e., CSFVvaccinated or -previously infected herds, was limited by an application of the test results. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation and estimation of protective antibody levels detected by ELISA and serum neutralization assay. A total of 522 negative and positive serums were tested by SN and ELISA in parallel. Comparisons of sample-to-positive (S/P) values …

Astronauts on the proposed Mars missions will be exposed to extended periods of social isolation (SI) and space radiation (SR). SI and SR-induced immune dysregulation can result in persistent neuroinflammation and neuronal damage which could negatively impact an astronaut’s health and ability to maintain adequate levels of performance. The synergistic effects of combined SI and SR on immune system functionality and the brain remain unknown. Determining how single and combined inflight stressors modulate the immune system is crucial for fully understanding pathways impacting astronaut health and performance. We used ground-based analogs of SI and SR in rodent models to investigate …

Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
One major limitation to the study of equine disease is the lack of in vitro models that accurately reflect the dynamic physiology of the horse. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop in vitro systems that recapitulate diverse equine tissue and organ microenvironments. To overcome this deficiency, we developed multiple biomimetic equine organoid systems that can be employed for a variety of investigations aimed at resolving outstanding questions in infectious disease pathogenesis, therapeutic development and drug metabolism, host defense mechanisms, immune-modulated disease, and equine developmental biology. Our innovative platform incorporates novel equine intestinal enteroid and airway organoid models derived …
