Diagnosis, Treatment, Genetic Basis, And Prevention Of Canine Hip Dysplasia, Nathaniel R. Woody May 2025

Diagnosis, Treatment, Genetic Basis, And Prevention Of Canine Hip Dysplasia, Nathaniel R. Woody

Senior Honors Theses

Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is a genetic disorder that results in an improper formation of the hip joint. This results in joint laxity, which eats away at the cartilage of the acetabulum. CHD causes arthritis, making normal walking painful for dogs. CHD is the result of many different genes and mutations working together. The best way to prevent CHD in dogs is to selectively breed animals who are not genotypic for the mutation. For dogs that already carry the mutation responsible for CHD the earlier the diagnosis and treatment the better chance they have of a full pain free life …

Variation In Air Sac Morphology And Postcranial Skeletal Pneumatization Patterns In The African Grey Parrot, Adam B. Lawson, Aracely Martinez, Brandon P. Hedrick, M. Scott Echols, Emma R. Schachner Oct 2024

Variation In Air Sac Morphology And Postcranial Skeletal Pneumatization Patterns In The African Grey Parrot, Adam B. Lawson, Aracely Martinez, Brandon P. Hedrick, M. Scott Echols, Emma R. Schachner

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

The anatomy of the avian lower respiratory system includes a complex interaction between air-filled pulmonary tissues, pulmonary air sacs, and much of the postcranial skeleton. Hypotheses related to the function and phylogenetic provenance of these respiratory structures have been posed based on extensive interspecific descriptions for an array of taxa. By contrast, intraspecific descriptions of anatomical variation for these features are much more limited, particularly for skeletal pneumatization, and are essential to establish a baseline for evaluating interspecific variation. To address this issue, we collected micro-computed tomography (μCT) scans of live and deceased African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) to assess …

Comparison Between Surgical And Non-Surgical Treatments Of Concomitant Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture And Medial Patellar Luxation In Small-Breed Dogs, Ekkapol Akaraphutiporn, Chalika Wangdee, Irin Kwananocha Sep 2024

Comparison Between Surgical And Non-Surgical Treatments Of Concomitant Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture And Medial Patellar Luxation In Small-Breed Dogs, Ekkapol Akaraphutiporn, Chalika Wangdee, Irin Kwananocha

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) and medial patellar luxation (MPL) are common problems that cause hindlimb dysfunction, lameness and pain in dogs. Although surgical intervention is recommended for these conditions, it may not be suitable for an individual with some underlying diseases. The objective of the present study was to compare the outcomes between surgical and non-surgical treatments for concomitant CrCLR and MPL in small-breed dogs. Seven stifles from five small-breed dogs with concomitant CrCLR and MPL were enrolled and divided into two groups. Four limbs (three dogs) in Group 1 were treated conservatively, and three limbs (two dogs) in …

Morphological And Morphometric Variations Of The Tympanic Bulla Between Domestic Shorthair And Brachycephalic Cats Utilizing Computed Tomography, Naparee Srisowanna, Damri Darawiroj, Nan Choisunirachon, Chutimon Thanaboonnipat, Sirinun Pisamai Tabtieang Sep 2024

Morphological And Morphometric Variations Of The Tympanic Bulla Between Domestic Shorthair And Brachycephalic Cats Utilizing Computed Tomography, Naparee Srisowanna, Damri Darawiroj, Nan Choisunirachon, Chutimon Thanaboonnipat, Sirinun Pisamai Tabtieang

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Tympanic morphology of the dogs was reported to be varied due to the characteristics of the skull types. The small tympanic bulla is normally seen in brachycephalic dogs. However, this variation in narrowed-skull shaped cats has not been unveiled yet. The objective of this study was to describe the tympanic morphology of cats between brachycephalic and domestic shorthair (DSH) cats. Computer tomography (CT)-skull images of 15 domestic shorthair cats and 11 brachycephalic cats were evaluated for tympanic dimension on transverse and dorsal planes and the tympanic bone thickness. All parameters were compared between both groups. The results revealed that all …

Normal Thymus Evaluation Using Radiographs And Computed Tomographic Images In Young And Adult Dogs, Yoenhee Park, Sang-Kwon Lee, Sooyoung Choi, Hojung Choi, Youngwon Lee, Kija Lee Jun 2024

Normal Thymus Evaluation Using Radiographs And Computed Tomographic Images In Young And Adult Dogs, Yoenhee Park, Sang-Kwon Lee, Sooyoung Choi, Hojung Choi, Youngwon Lee, Kija Lee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The thymus generally presents as a sail-shaped soft-tissue opacity on thoracic radiographs in young, pre-pubescent dogs. After puberty, lymphatic tissue is replaced by adipose tissue and can usually no longer be identified on radiographs; however, thymic remnants have often been observed in adult dogs. The objective of this retrospective descriptive study was to investigate the incidence of thymic remnants using thoracic radiographs and to analyze the incidence in dogs by age, sex and breed. We analyzed the data from 1,464 dogs that underwent both thoracic ventrodorsal and right lateral radiography, of which 40 underwent both radiography and computed tomography (CT). …

Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome In Canine Patients, Morgan Powell Apr 2024

Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome In Canine Patients, Morgan Powell

Honors College Theses

Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS) is a perplexing and debilitating ocular condition that affects canine patients primarily in the form of the sudden onset of total vision loss. Veterinary literature will be reviewed to discuss the basic anatomy of the canine eye and retina, as well as to investigate various diagnostic techniques to evaluate ophthalmic function and hypotheses of the pathogenesis of SARDS. The complexity of this disease and the absence of research leads to veterinarians and clients grappling with unanswered questions. This research surveys veterinarians to gain a perspective of the rareness of the disease, the most frequent …

Design, Fabrication, And Evaluation Of 3-D-Printed Cystotomy Spoons As A Retrieval Method In Dogs, Davina C. D'Angelo, Sam E. Stephens, Morten O. Jensen, Lauren R. Thomas Oct 2023

Design, Fabrication, And Evaluation Of 3-D-Printed Cystotomy Spoons As A Retrieval Method In Dogs, Davina C. D'Angelo, Sam E. Stephens, Morten O. Jensen, Lauren R. Thomas

Animal Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

OBJECTIVE

Current cystotomy methods often implement the use of off-label devices, resulting in urocystolith extraction difficulty and potentially leading to postoperative complications and discomfort for the patient. The objective of this study was to create 3 novel 3-D printed cystotomy spoons that offer a dedicated solution for removing urocystoliths from a patient's urinary bladder.

ANIMALS

Clinical use of the 3 novel 3-D printed cystotomy spoons were ultimately evaluated in 4 dogs and 1 cat that presented for urocystotlith removal at 3 different veterinary hospitals in northwest Arkansas.

METHODS

The novel cystotomy spoons were designed using SolidWorks, 3-D printed with a …

Long-Term Outcome And Complications Of 32 Distal Femoral Osteotomies Performed For Correction Of Mpl In Dogs Without Cranial Cruciate Disease, Nicholas Crawfis Jan 2018

Long-Term Outcome And Complications Of 32 Distal Femoral Osteotomies Performed For Correction Of Mpl In Dogs Without Cranial Cruciate Disease, Nicholas Crawfis

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Many canines suffer severe, grade I-IV, medial patella luxation causing a persistent lameness, severely reducing the quality of life for the dog (Linney et al 2011). For these patients surgical intervention is recommended to alleviate these symptoms. The procedure used to do so is a distal femoral osteotomy (DFO). This procedure allows for correction of torsion in the femur and quadriceps mechanism, and frontal plane abnormalities at the same time. The present study aims to describe the long-term outcome and related complications of 32 DFOs, without concomitant Cranial Cruciate Ligament rupture (CCLR), in a large private practice referral hospital based …

The Muscles Of The Forelimb Of Canis Familiaris, Charles G. Wilber Jun 1938

The Muscles Of The Forelimb Of Canis Familiaris, Charles G. Wilber

Bachelors’ Theses

In the study of the anatomy of the vertebrates, there has been much work done and a large number of the forms have been studied with great thoroughness. Among the domesticated animals this is particularly true. The students of the veterinary sciences have given us a deep insight into the structure and function of the mammalian body. This is most certainly true in the case of the dog. The species Canis familiaris has been used for many years in the studies of physiology and surgery. However, it is also true that a plenitude of literature relative to the anatomy of …
