Cross-bred ewes carrying twins, confirmed via ultrasound, were split into two groups: nutrient-restricted (NR), n=15, and control (CON), n=16. On day (d) 86, at 60% of the NRC requirements, nutrient restriction began and lasted until parturition, at which point ewes were placed back onto a regular diet. After parturition, milk samples and lamb weights were taken on days 1, 7, 14, and 21. Milk lipids were then extracted using modified methods proposed by Hara and Radin (1978). Lipid samples were weighed and then methylated following the procedure outlined by Lock and colleagues (2013). Methylated samples were then analyzed by gas …

Abstract

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) urges alternatives to control gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Copper oxide wire particles (COWP) are more efficacious when used with other dewormers and little is known on efficacy of diatomaceous earth (DE) to control gastrointestinal parasites. The objective was to examine the effects of DE and COWP on GIN control. Katahdin lambs (n = 32; ~150 d of age; 25.0 ± 1.8 kg) were randomly assigned to receive: 1) DE fed at an estimated 2% dry matter intake (with the assumption of moderate consumption of bermudagrass forage and provided supplement), 2) 1g COWP, 3) both 2% DE and …

The Incidence Of Lupinosis In Sheep Grazing Phomopsis-Resistant Lupin Stubbles, Peter Morcombe, Jeremy Allen

Lupinosis is one of the major diseases of grazing livestock in Western Australia. It occurs when animals graze lupin stubble containing toxins produced by the fungus Phomopsis leptostromiformis. The Department of Agriculture has recently released new cultivars of Lupinus angustifolius which are more resistant to colonization by Phomopsis, and therefore develop less toxicity, than those previously available (Cowling et al. 1988). The new cultivars - Gungurru and Yorrel - are called Phomopsis-resistant, however their resistance is only moderate. The old cultivars are referred to as Phomopsis-susceptible.

Sheep of all classes are drenched more or less regularly throughout the agricultural areas of Western Australia.

Much of the drench is wasted because it is used in the wrong circumstances. This situation is probably a result of poor understanding of drenching.

This article discusses the philosophy of drenching and attempts to relate this to the epidemiology of parasitism as it is currently understood.

FOR many years, the losses from blowfly strike on the crutch and tail areas imposed a tremendous economic burden on the Merino sheep industry in Australia. Today, the modified Mules operation and the tail-strip treatment have provided a convincing answer to this menace. Breech wrinkles encourage strike, and although as a long-term policy, efforts are being made to eliminate wrinkles by breeding for plainness of breech, it is of the utmost importance to give the sheep IMMEDIATE protection by the most effective methods available.

Successful animal husbandry is fundamentally dependent on the efficient reproduction and preservation of young stock. Not only are losses among the latter a prolific source of direct economic damage, but they also tend to create an equally serious disadvantage of a more indirect nature. Losses of young animals, unless a reduction of our live stock population can be tolerated, necessitate the setting aside of a larger number of females for purely reproductive purposes than would be required if such losses were not a factor.
