This study evaluated the efficacy of a eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) cream and vapocoolant spray (VS) in preventing pain in calves following ear-tagging. Thirty-four calves were randomly assigned to three groups: no anesthesia control (CON, n=11), EMLA applied 60 minutes prior (EMLA, n=11), and five-second VS application immediately prior (VS, n=12). Pain pressure threshold (PPT) was measured at 18±1 days of age, with the left ear of the CON group serving as the sham group (Sham, n=11), followed by ear-tagging at 21±1 days. Surgery must often be performed in fields where only simple equipment and facilities are available for cattle practice, and anesthesia with minimal procedures should be improved for sufficient surgery in the field and on farms. The study aimed to investigate total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) using xylazine and propofol to improve the anesthesia protocol for field surgeries in calves on farms. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dexmedetomidine (DEX) alone on pain mitigation following cautery disbudding in calves. A total of 21 calves were randomly divided into three groups: sham-disbudded control with placebo (S, n = 8); hot-iron disbudded after placebo (D, n = 6); hot-iron disbudded after 0.01 mg/kg of DEX (DeD, n = 7). The pain-related responses measured included serum cortisol levels, struggling scores, pain-related behaviors and other physiological values. Successful animal husbandry is fundamentally dependent on the efficient reproduction and preservation of young stock. Not only are losses among the latter a prolific source of direct economic damage, but they also tend to create an equally serious disadvantage of a more indirect nature. Losses of young animals, unless a reduction of our live stock population can be tolerated, necessitate the setting aside of a larger number of females for purely reproductive purposes than would be required if such losses were not a factor.
