An experiment was conducted to study the efficacy of citrus fruit oil on growth parameters and biochemical parameters of broilers in 4 groups with 2 replicates of 20 chicks in each. Standard broiler diet without aflatoxin was given to group A, basal diet + citrus fruit oil 2.5 g kg^{-1} to group B, basal diet + 1 ppm aflatoxin to group C, and 1 ppm aflatoxin + basal diet + citrus fruit oil 2.5 g kg^{-1} to group D. The present study focused on the effect of water temperature on growth and feed conversion ratio of juvenile Black Sea flounder (Platichthys flesus luscus; initial weight: 2.0 g ± 0.01 g). The experiment was carried out for 84 days with the following range of water temperatures: 13, 17, 21, and 25 °C. Growth, food consumption, and feed conversion ratio were the highest at 21 °C and the lowest at 13 °C. Two stocking densities (20 and 40 fry/80-l tank) with 4 feeding rates (2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% body weight/day) were used to determine the optimum feeding level for himri barbel fry during a 60-day culture period. Water quality parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and total ammonia nitrogen) were monitored during the experiment. In a 12-week feeding trial, the effect of 2 algae meals (Ulva rigida or Cystoseira barbata) on feed intake, growth, and nutrient utilization of juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was investigated. This was the first attempt to utilize Cystoseira barbata as a feed supplement for Nile tilapia. The Effects Of Fermented Soybean Meal On Growth Performance And Immune Characteristics In Weaned Piglets, Xin Liu, Jianlei Feng, Zirong Xu, Yaping Lu, Yuanyuan Liu

This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) on growth performance and immune characteristics of piglets. In all, 60 crossbred piglets (Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshire) were allocated to 2 dietary treatments; 3 replications of 10 pigs were used for each treatment, and all piglets were weaned at 35 days and fed for 23 days. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG) improved (1.44% vs. 1.36%) in piglets fed the FSBM diet and feed gain ratio (FGR) decreased by 5.56% (P < 0.05) compared to the controls (soybean meal treatment). The level of serum IgG decreased 27.2% (P < 0.01) in piglets fed FSBM. Lymphocytes from whole blood had a lower proliferative response to concanavalin A (ConA) (P < 0.01) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the splenocytes of piglets fed FSBM also showed lower proliferative response to ConA (P < 0.05) and LPS (P < 0.01). The results indicated that FSBM was beneficial to growth performance and decreased the immune response to soybean protein in piglets.

In an 83-day-nutrition trial, effects of feed production technique and feeding frequency on feed intake, growth and nutrient utilization were determined in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Three thousand six hundred fish (170 ± 2.6 g) were randomly allocated to experimental sea cages (approx. 5800 l) according to a 2 x 2 experimental plan [2 processing techniques: steam pelleted diet (P) vs. extruded diet (E); 2 feeding frequencies: twice (2) vs. 3 times (3)]. The P3 group consumed significantly (P < 0.05) more feed than the fish fed extruded diets, irrespective of feeding frequency. Ninety-six growing pigs were used to evaluate the effects of fluoride levels on growth performance, serum indexes and antioxidant systems. Four dietary treatments were formulated by supplementing fluorine (as NaF) to provide the following added fluorine levels: 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that pigs consuming diets with 100 and 150 mg/kg fluorine added had poor growth performance, and most serum biochemical indexes were significantly altered compared to the control (P < 0.05). On the other hand, serum and liver MDA concentration significantly increased due to the addition of 150 mg/kg fluorine (P < 0.05). T-AOC levels and the activities of SOD, GSH-PX, CAT and GST of serum and liver in fluoride added groups decreased, most of which altered significantly (P < 0.05). These results indicated that excessive fluoride ingestion had an adverse effect on animal health and performance.

Karyotypes of the crossbred progeny of wild and zebu cattle, born from the insemination of zebu dams with deep frozen semen from gaur (Bos gaurus) and banteng (Bos javanicus) sires were studied. The crossbred progeny (F1) born from the gaur sire and zebu dams revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n=58. Fifty-four acrocentric and 2 submetacentric autosomes were found, sex chromosomes being submetacentric and metacentric in the male and submetacentric in the female. Growth performance, carcass measurements and carcass characteristics of three fat-tailed Turkish breeds (Awassi = A, Morkaraman = M and Tushin = T) weaned at 2.5 months of age and subjected to semi-intensive feeding during a grazing period on pasture for 70 days were evaluated. At the end of the 70-day grazing period, M lambs showed the highest performance for daily weight gain and the amount of concentrate consumed per bodyweight gain in addition to grazing on pasture. The effects of the breed and sex of lambs on daily weight gain on pasture were significant (P < 0.05) and highly significant (P < 0.01), respectively. Male lambs were superior to female lambs with respect to daily weight gain on pasture. The slaughter traits, carcass measurements and carcass characteristics of 14 male lambs representing three fat-tailed breeds were compared at the end of the grazing period of the year in which they were born. After slaughter, carcasses were chilled at +4 °C for 24 h and measurements were taken on the intact cold carcasses. The carcasses were then dissected into wholesale cuts. The hot carcass weight and hindshank weight of M lambs were heavier than those of A and T lambs. M had a higher hot dressing percentage and larger M. longissimus dorsi (LD) area than those of A and T lambs. Most of the weights of wholesale cuts such as foreshank and breast, sirloin, leg, rib and hindshank were significantly (P < 0.05; P < 0.01) affected by sheep breed. It is recommended either that A, M or T male and female lambs weaned at 2.5 months of age in eastern Turkey should be fed with 450 g concentrate per head per day on pasture for 3 to 3.5 months of grazing season, or lambs should be supplemented with more than 450 g concentrate feed on pasture because native fat-tailed Turkish breeds supplemented with 450 g concentrate on pasture did not give carcasses with an adequate commercial weight at the end of a 70-day fattening period.

The present study was designed to determine the effects of lighting regimes on the growth performances and carcass characteristics of Bronze turkeys reared in intensive conditions. Turkeys were reared under three lighting regimes (group 1, 12 h; group 2, 18 h; and group 3, 23 h.). In the experiment, the live weights of the turkeys (male+female) in groups 1, 2 and 3 were found to be 4578±142, 4630±131 and 4942±139 g respectively at the end of a 16-week period.
