In vitro embryo production has proven as potential tool for understanding factors involving developmental biology of embryos. This study aimed at examining the effects of recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone (rhFSH) on meiotic resumption and also on developmental competence of cat oocytes. Experiment 1 studied mRNA expression of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) receptors (R) in cumulus cells. mRNA expression of LH receptor in cumulus cells after oocyte maturation was additionally examined. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an important food-borne zoonotic protozoa. Infection occurs when humans and warm-blooded animals consume raw or lightly cooked cysts containing meat or sporulated oocysts contaminated food. T. gondii infection has been observed in food animals in many countries suggesting the significance of food animals in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis. However, there is no report regarding T. gondii infection in food animals other than pigs in Taiwan. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), or dermatosparaxis, is a rare hereditary disease of the connective tissue, which is characterized by skin hyperextensibility and laxity. In the present article, the case of a crossbred female spayed cat, at the age of 2 years, was presented with hyperelasticity of the skin, alopecia, and an ulcerative wound on the left hind leg. The animal's dorsum was hyperextensible, smooth to the touch, and could be easily torn with minor traumas. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the present report is the first documented feline case of cutaneous asthenia in Turkey.

Dorsal luxation of the scapula is a rare orthopedic disorder caused by traumatic rupture of the muscles supporting the scapula. The presented case consisted of an adult cat in which luxation of the scapula had occurred due to trauma. During clinical examination, dorsal displacement of the scapula was evident upon manipulation of the limb. Radiological examination did not reveal any fractures or other concurrent injuries. In the surgical treatment of the patient, the muscles were sutured in place. The patient regained its normal gait without any complications within 4 weeks.

Amiodarone can be used for treatment of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias in canine medicine, but its exact role in feline electrocardiography and its side effects have not been proven. The aim of this study was the evaluation of amiodarone and its different dosages' effects on intact feline heart electrocardiograms. Eight healthy stray cats were selected and control electrocardiogram was obtained. Amiodarone tablets were prescribed twice daily at 10 mg/kg for 7 days. The study is of the antinociceptive effects of tramadol on the thermal threshold response in eight cats using athermal threshold-testing device which contained a heater element and a temperature sensor placed on the shavedlateral thoracic area. Each cat randomly received an intramuscular administration of tramadol 2 mg/kg, morphine 0.2mg/kg and saline 0.04 ml/kg (placebo) at a weekly interval from an observer unaware of the treatment. The study aimed to apply flow cytometry (FC) for early detection and monitor of treated response cats withIMHA by measuring immunoglobulin-G (IgG) and immunoglobulin-M (IgM) on red blood cells. The present study describes giant-cell tumor of bone (GCToB) with lymph node involvement in a 5-year-old crossbred cat. The animal was referred to the surgery clinic with progressive subcutaneous swelling in the left proximal femoral region, severe lameness, constipation, and dysuria. A moderately firm, subcutaneous, palpable mass, 9 cm in diameter, was observed, and biopsy samples were taken. Histopathologically, the mass was constituted by ovoid-shaped mononuclear cells intermixed with many multinucleated giant cells (MGC). The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility and to determinate the resistance genes by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) among enterococci isolated from healthy cats and dogs in İzmir, Turkey. From a total of 114 rectal swabs, 91 (31 cats and 60 dogs) stains were isolated as enterococci. Twenty eight isolates were identified as Enterococcus faecalis and 63 as Enterococcus faecium with the API 20 IDStrep system. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined by disc diffusion. A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented because of post-prandial regurgitation, gasping shortly after eating, weight loss, dyspnea, and tachypnea. Six months prior to the onset of these signs the cat had received nutritional support via gastrostomy and then nasogastric tubes. A diagnosis of esophageal diverticulum was made on the basis of clinical features, contrast esophagram, and endoscopy, and was considered a complication of tube feeding. Medical therapy, including parenteral fluids, ranitidine, metoclopramide, and cisapride, and a soft, bland low-fat diet resulted in improvement in the clinical signs within 1 week. A 2-year-old male cat presented with sudden onset of binocular blindness in both eyes. The appearance of eyes seemed to change to cloudy white. Evaluation of intraocular components of the anterior segment was completely impossible due to the presence of homogeneous discoloration of the affected eyes. Careful history taking revealed that the cat had received megestrol acetate prescribed by the referring veterinarian for the treatment of urine spraying for 10 months. In this case presentation, retinal degeneration due to enrofloxacin intoxication encountered in a domestic short-haired male cat is discussed. History of the patient revealed that he had received 7.8 mg/kg enrofloxacin twice daily for 10 days. Both pupils were dilated. Pupillary light reflexes were negative in both eyes. Direct and indirect ophthalmoscopic examinations showed tapetal hyperreflectivity, and slight attenuation of the retinal blood vessels compared to those of a healthy cat was observed in both retinas. Coxiella burnetii causes Q fever (Coxiellosis) in humans and animals worldwide. The present study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of Q fever among stray cats in 3 providences (Ankara, Niğde, and Kayseri) in Central Anatolia, Turkey. A total of 143 sera from stray cats were examined for the presence of IgG against C. burnetii phase II antigen by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Seven out of the 143 (4.9%) stray cats were seropositive for Q fever, with titers of 1:64 to 1:256. Seroprevalences in Ankara, Niğde, and Kayseri provinces were 1.6%, 7.4%, and 8.3%, respectively. Patellar luxation is an orthopedic disorder seen rarely in cats. In this study, patellar luxation was encountered in 8 of 7744 cats brought to the Department of Surgery of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of İstanbul University between the years of 1995-2001. The rate of patellar luxation was 0.10% of feline cases. The patellar luxation incidence in 5145 orthopedic lesions in cats was 0.15%. Unilateral uterine prolapse that occurred immediately after parturition was diagnosed in a 15-month-old cat brought to the clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. Depending on clinical and ultrasonographic examination findings, the other uterine horn was though to be invaginated into the prolapsed horn. To purpose of treatment, ovariohysterectomy was performed. During laparotomy, the non-pregnant right uterine horn was seen to be invaginated into the pregnant uterine horn.

A four years old, mixed breed cat was reported to have a Joyeuxiella sp. tapeworm infection. Upon necropsy, The most striking lesion was a diffuse chronic catarrhal enteritis along with a heavy tapeworm infection in the small intestine. The tapeworms were identified as the genus Joyeuxeilla, Family Dilepididae, based on the morphology which were comprised of 2 sets of reproductive organs in a mature segment and only one egg in each egg capsule, in the gravid segments. This is the first report of Joyeuxiella sp. tapeworm infection in Thailand.

A 1-year-old cat with a suspected abortion was brought to the clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. The cat was examined because of a reoccurrence of a bloody vaginal discharge. Failure to detect a foetus by ultrasonography and the presence of an anechoic zone in the uterus revealed that there had not an abortion. Since the anechoic zone was large, it was thought that a pharmacological approach would not be successful. The types and rates of acrosome and other (head, mid-piece and tail) abnormal spermatozoon types were determined by the Spermac® staining technique. Semen from 5 stray tom cats under the same management conditions was used. Semen collection was performed under general anesthesia by electro-ejaculator once a week for 5 weeks. After ejaculation the semen was diluted by 100 µl of 0.9% NaCl solution and stained with Spermac® stain for morphological evaluation. In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. This study sought to determine the roles and effectiveness of findings obtained from radiographic examinations of lungs in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases and to place radiographic findings into routine practice in dogs and cats. Fifty-eight dogs and 27 cats of different breeds, sexes and ages suspected of having pulmonary disease were used as the study materials after clinical examination and anamnesis. Periodontal disease in cats was investigated with respect to clinical, radiological and microbiological evaluations. Each tooth group was evaluated according to plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, calculus index, periodontal disease index, furcation exposure index, feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) and tooth mobility. The prevalence of the disease was evaluated statistically. Upper and lower premolars were affected by periodontal disease at a higher rate than others. Tooth loss was often observed in incisives, premolars and canines concurrently. The clinical, laboratory, ultrasonographic and pathological characteristics of a poorly differentiated pancreatic carcinoma in a 6-year-old cat are described in this study. Clinical abnormalities included severe dehydration, icterus, and partial alopecia on the medial surface of the limbs and ventral abdomen. A nodular mass was detected on abdominal palpation. Ultrasonography of the abdomen revealed a hypoechoic mass including hyperechoic and anechoic areas in the pancreatic region, and several hypoechoic areas and dilatation of the biliary duct and gallbladder in the liver. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of gonadotrophin and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) supplemented Synthetic Oviduct Fluid (SOF) and Ham's F-10 media on the in vitro maturation of cat oocytes. Oocytes collected from spayed stray queens served as the material of the study. The ovaries were brought to the laboratory within 2 h in PBS solution at 38 °C. Larvae of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus were identified in the feces of a 2-year-old female cat suffering from dyspnea and incoordination for 18 months. The larvae had a terminal S-shaped projection and a subterminal dorsal spine. The larvae measured 363-378x15 µm (aver. 370x15 µm). Firstly, moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was given subcutaneously to 3 healthy stray cats over 1 year old to check adverse effects on cats. No adverse reaction was observed. In this study, 30% suspension of barium sulfate (BS) and 1/1 and 1/3 dilated solutions of Na-meglumine diatriozate (NMD) and iohexol (IO) were administered via the naso-gastric trackt to 3 dogs and 3 cats in two different doses, i.e. 5 ml/kg (lower dose) and 10 ml/kg (higher dose). This study was carried out with a total of 23 animals: two dogs and 21 cats. Appropriate mini-titanium plates and screws were selected with the aid of radiographs the day before the operation. All the animals were anesthesized with xylazine hydrochloride 2.3 mg/kg IM (Rompun, Bayer, Turkey) premedication followed by ketamine hydrochloride 10 mg/kg IM (Ketalar, Eczacıbaşı, Turkey) injection. The selected mini-titanium plates were shaped according to the fractured bone and applied. For the first time in Turkey, renal autotransplantation in 7 cats and renal allotransplantation in 7 cats having blood-crossmatch-compatible donors were performed. Immunosuppression was maintained by a prednisolone-cyclosporin combination in the renal allotransplantation group. All cats in the renal allotransplantation group died during the operation or between 3 and 72 h postoperatively. Two cats in the renal autotransplantation group survived approximately 2 years. Hyperacute or acute rejection findings were not encountered according to perioperative observations, laboratory findings or histopathological evaluations of renal allografts.
