Rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) are one of the most widespread invasive avian species worldwide. This species was introduced to the island of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, USA, in the 1960s. The rapidly increasing population has caused substantial economic losses in the agricultural and tourism industries. We evaluated the efficacy of a roost culling program conducted by an independent contractor from March 2020 to March 2021. We estimated island-wide minimum abundance was 10,512 parakeets in January 2020 and 7,372 in April 2021. Over 30 nights of culling at four roost sites, approximately 6,030 parakeets were removed via air rifles with 4,415 …

Thai native chicken meat is a high-quality protein source of unique flavor. Genetic preservation and breeding programs are beneficial to maintain purebred populations. Aiming at improving post-thawed sperm quality, this study is the first to apply extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATPe) in freezing extender to preserve Thai native chicken sperm. Eight semen samples from eight Thai native chickens (n = 8) were included. Initial semen evaluation and sperm size measurement were performed. Beltsville poultry semen extender supplemented with 0 and 30 mM ATPe was served as a control and treatment group, respectively. After thawing, motility and motion characteristics were evaluated by …

A Review Of Avian Influenza A Virus Associations In Synanthropic Birds, Susan A. Shriner, J. Jeffrey Root Oct 2020

A Review Of Avian Influenza A Virus Associations In Synanthropic Birds, Susan A. Shriner, J. Jeffrey Root

USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Avian influenza A viruses (IAV) have received significant attention due to the threat they pose to human, livestock, and wildlife health. In this review, we focus on what is known about IAV dynamics in less common avian species that may play a role in trafficking IAVs to poultry operations. Specifically, we focus on synanthropic bird species. Synanthropic species, otherwise known as peridomestic, are species that are ecologically associated with humans and anthropogenically modified landscapes, such as agricultural and urban areas. Aquatic birds such as waterfowl and shorebirds are the species most commonly associated with avian IAVs, and are generally considered …

Absence of sexual dimorphism makes it difficult to determine bird’s sex. A number of both invasive and noninvasive methods as a DNA template of sampling for avian sexing can be used. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of different sources of DNA for avian sexing by PCR. Samples were collected from dried blood spots, buccal swabs, cloacal swabs and feces. The highest success rate for sexing determination was from the dried blood spots, accounting for 100%, while those from the buccal swabs, cloacal swabs and feces were 74%, 75.47% and 29.17%, respectively. The non-urate fecal samples …

Cardiovascular Tolerance And Safety Of Intravenous Lidocaine In The Broiler Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Joao Manuel Lemos Brandao Jan 2014

Cardiovascular Tolerance And Safety Of Intravenous Lidocaine In The Broiler Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Joao Manuel Lemos Brandao

LSU Master's Theses

Lidocaine, an amide local anesthetic agent, is commonly used in mammals, including humans. There is a general assumption that birds are more sensitive to lidocaine than mammals. Relatively low doses of lidocaine have been suggested to cause toxic effects in birds. While this information appears to be anecdotal, it has been perpetuated in the literature. The overall objective of this thesis research was to determine the tolerance and safety of intravenous lidocaine in broiler chickens. To assess the cardiovascular effects of lidocaine, relative changes on heart rate and mean blood pressure were calculated. Clinically significant cardiovascular effects were defined as …

Sex Determination By Chdw And Chdz Genes Of Avian Sex Chromosomes In Nymphicus Hollandicus, Harun Ceri̇t, Kozet Avanus

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was sex determination in Nymphicus hollandicus without giving it any harm and obtaining accurate results by DNA analysis. CHD genes are preserved within avian Z and W sex chromosomes. The intron regions of the CHDW and CHDZ genes vary between male (ZZ) and female (ZW) individuals. The method used in this study was based on this difference. DNA was extracted from feathers instead of blood. The intron regions of CHDW and CHDZ genes were amplified by sex specific primers (P2 and P8). PCR products were screened by agarose gel electrophoresis. Individuals showing double (ZW) and …

Monoclonal Antibodies To Avian Escherichia Coli Iss, Steven L. Foley, Shelley M. Horne, Catherine W. Giddings, Thomas R. Gustad, Erick D. Handegard, Michael Robinson, Lisa K. Nolan Jan 2003

Monoclonal Antibodies To Avian Escherichia Coli Iss, Steven L. Foley, Shelley M. Horne, Catherine W. Giddings, Thomas R. Gustad, Erick D. Handegard, Michael Robinson, Lisa K. Nolan

Lisa K. Nolan

Escherichia coli infections are a major problem for the poultry industry in the United States. Yet, the virulence mechanisms operative in avian E. coli are poorly understood. In the present studies, monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) have been generated that may facilitate study of the pathogenesis of avian colibacillosis. These MAbs are directed against the Iss protein because results from our laboratory have shown that the possession of iss DNA sequences is strongly correlated with the E. coli implicated in avian colibacillosis. As part of an overall effort to explore the role of iss/Iss in colibacillosis pathogenesis, Iss protein has been purified, …
