This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pre-incubation formaldehyde fumigation on the tracheal epithelium of chicken embryos and chicks. Throughout the study pre-incubation formaldehyde fumigation was applied to 18-day-old embryos and 1-day-old chicks only once, at 1 of 2 different concentrations (3x, 42 ml of formalin and 21 g of potassium permanganate per m^3 and 4x, 56 ml of formalin and 28 g of potassium permanganate per m^3) for 1 of 2 different durations (20 min and 40 min). The Effects Of Gamma Irradiation On The Quality Of Ready-To-Cook Meatballs, Ayşe Karadağ, Gürbüz Güneş

The effects of gamma irradiation on microbial quality, lipid oxidation, and sensory characteristics of meatballs were studied, and these effects were compared with the effects on ground beef. Meat samples were irradiated at 0, 3, 6, and 9 kGy, then stored at 4 ± 1 ºC for 14 days. Irradiation resulted in greater microbial inactivation, lower lipid oxidation, and less adverse effects on sensory characteristics in meatballs compared to ground beef. Irradiation of meatballs at 3 kGy resulted in about a 4-log reduction in total microbial count without significantly affecting the quality of the product during the first 3 days …

Data obtained from 5260 birth records of 1179 Hissardale sheep maintained at the Livestock Experiment Station, Jahangirabad, in the district of Khanewal during 1978-1995 were analyzed. The objective was to evaluate the performance and to estimate the heritability of Hissardale sheep in Pakistan. Mean 180-day, 270-day, and yearling weights were 23.5 ± 3.31 kg, 25.7 ± 3.49 kg, and 30.7 ± 3.83 kg, respectively. Mean greasy fleece weight was 3.6 ± 0.57 kg. Variance components, genetic parameters, and breeding values for birth weight in Brown Swiss cattle reared in Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute were estimated by REML-BLUP procedures using MTDFREML computer programme. Six different animal models were fitted for the trait ranging from a simple to the most comprehensive model. The most detailed model (model 6) provided the best fit to the used dataset. Heritability was higher in the model without maternal effect. Although maternal effect had a significant place for the data, environmental effect due to dam was not important. Effects Of Age, Sex, Feather Colour, Body Measurements, And Body Weight On Down And Feather Yield In Native Turkish Geese, Mustafa Saatci

The aim of this study was to calculate the feather and down production by native Turkish geese and to investigate the effects on these traits. In total 145 native Turkish geese were used in the experiment. The birds were divided into 4 groups according to their feather colour at 10 and 12 weeks of ages. They were individually weighed and measured with the help of wing tags. Geese at 10 weeks had heavier feathers than those at 12 weeks, while geese at 12 weeks produced more down (P < 0.01). As detected in down weight, the older group has a greater amount of total feathers than the younger group (P < 0.001). Male geese produced significantly heavier feathers and down than females (P < 0.05). While black geese produced the heaviest feathers, yellow geese produced the heaviest down (P < 0.05). White geese generated the lightest weights of the products. The strongest correlation was found between total feather yield and chest girth (0.75). Reasonable correlations were detected between liveweight and other traits (0.36-0.62). This is not a widely studied subject in Turkey; therefore, the data obtained can be used for the identification of native Turkish geese.

The present study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and leishmaniosis among Kangal dogs on breeding farms in Sivas, Turkey. Serum samples from 50 Kangal dogs without clinical symptoms of disease were tested for anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies with the Sabin Feldman Dye Test (SFDT) and for anti-Leishmania antibodies with the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT). Forty-six out of the 50 dogs were seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii, with titers ranging from 1:16 to 1:1024. Alleles of physiological candidate genes for reproductive traits, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and growth hormone receptor (GHR) were assessed to determine their associations with total egg production (NE), average days of continual egg-laying (ADCE), and number of double yolk eggs (DYE) in Wenchang chickens (Chinese indigenous breed). PCR-RFLP was used for genotype identification. The frequency of restriction enzyme C1/C2 alleles in the population was 0.53 (C1) and 0.47 (C2) for IGF-1. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of liver fluke infection in sheep in the northwest region of Iran (municipal slaughterhouse of Tabriz). The study included the livers of 140 sheep that were collected by systematic random sampling. The prevalence rate of Fasciola hepatica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum was 8.57% and 20%, respectively.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of canine ectoparasite infestation in pet dogs from the Shiraz area of southern Iran, with no known exposure to insecticides. In all, 160 dogs were examined for ectoparasites in each of the 4 seasons and samples were collected. The most common ectoparasite was Ctenocephalides canis, which infested 22 of the 160 dogs. Pulex irritans was identified on 2 of the dogs and 142 Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks were found on 13 dogs. A total of 1500 serum samples were collected from cattle, buffaloes, and humans. The Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detected Brucella antibodies in 56 (10.18%) and 44 (8%) of the cattle, respectively. In samples collected from buffaloes 9.38% and 6.92% were positive, whereas 14% and 11% of the samples from humans were found to be positive by RBPT and ELISA, respectively. Among village workers a higher prevalence of brucellosis was recorded in females than in males. Abattoir-associated personnel also had a higher incidence of brucellosis. An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of vitamin E on the metabolic impact of heat stress in hens. The study included 150 Leghorn laying hens, which were assigned to 2 groups and initially subjected to the same environmental conditions. The relationship between the prepubertal body weight, testicular size, testosterone concentration, and postpubertal reproductive function was investigated in Kıvırcık ram lambs. The body weight, testicular size, and testosterone concentration were measured every 20 days between 60 and 420 days of age. The objective of this experimental study was to examine the pathological effects of the intramuscular administration of gentamicin to growing chickens. Two experiments of 35 days´ duration were conducted simultaneously. In both experiments White Leghorn cockerels of 6 weeks of age were randomly divided into 4 groups and gentamicin was administered intramuscularly to the birds on days 1 and 3 at a dose of 10, 50, 100, and 0 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Subclinical mastitis in Anatolian buffaloes (n = 71) in Afyon, Turkey was evaluated using 1637 milk samples collected monthly for 9 months. Tests applied to milk samples included the California Mastitis Test (CMT), somatic cell count (SCC), and bacteriological examination. The threshold limit for SCC was found as 130 × 10^3 cells/ml. Anatolian buffaloes are infected above this level and they are likely to be uninfected below this level. Variations in the helminth species parasitizing the rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus L., and their prevalences were compared in 2 different localities (Gölbaşı Dam Lake and Kocadere Stream) in Bursa province in northwestern Turkey. The overall prevalences of helminth infections were 46.7% and 92.3% at Gölbaşı Lake and Kocadere Stream, respectively. The following helminths were detected: Dactylogyrus difformis, Diplostomum spathaceum metacercariae, Asymphlodora markewitschi, Ligula intestinalis plerocercoids, Skrajibillanus scardinii, Eustrongylides sp. larvae, and Hysterothylacium sp. larvae. The objective of this study was to report the reproductive traits of mares by ultrasonography and hormone analyses in subtropical Taiwan and the successful artificial breeding of mares using a self-developed computer-assisted single insemination technique. A previously developed computer-assisted image analysis technique at our reproduction centre was employed to determine the optimal time for artificial insemination (AI). Evaluation of intraocular components of the anterior segment was completely impossible due to the presence of homogeneous discoloration of the affected eyes. Careful history taking revealed that the cat had received megestrol acetate prescribed by the referring veterinarian for the treatment of urine spraying for 10 months. Seven dogs of different breed, age, and sex that were diagnosed with anal sac fistulae upon clinical examination constituted the study material. Sedation for the procedure was maintained by means of xylazine hydrochloride administered intramuscularly. The patients were placed in the lateral recumbency position for the insertion into the fistulae of an appropriate probe, selected according to the lesion. A prospective longitudinal observation study was carried out with 150 randomly selected dairy herds from among 1684 Turkish Dairy Breeding Association (TDBA) herds in Burdur, Konya, and Kırklareli provinces. The herds were stratified as small scale (less than 11 milking cows) and medium-large scale (more than 10 milking cows). The survey was conducted between October 2003 and September 2004, and each herd was visited at least once per month. The alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists atipamezole and yohimbine were used to antagonize medetomidine-induced sedation in 6-8-month-old native breed female goats. Intramuscular injection of medetomidine at the dose rate of 40 \mu g/kg body weight induced sedation and recumbency within 10-20 min in the goats. After recumbency, the goats were injected with saline (5 ml) (control group), atipamezole (0.2 mg/kg), or yohimbine (0.2 mg/kg) via the jugular vein. The duration of recumbency in the control group was 90 ± 9 min (mean ± SE). The effects of sedation continued in the control group goats even after regaining the righting reflex and standing. …

This research paper is aimed at estimating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-induced production losses in individual dairy and fattening cattle in Turkey. The data used were obtained from a Delphi Expert Opinion Survey. The weighted average FMD-induced financial losses for all breeds were estimated to be $294/head for a milking cow, $152/head for a dairy heifer and $197/head for beef cattle. However, the amount of financial loss varied across different breeds, ages, and sexes. Seventeen Eastern Anatolian Red (EAR) bulls at 20 months of age were divided into 2 treatment groups and fed for either 168 days (S) or 210 days (L). Initial and final weights were not significantly different. While bulls in the L group had the highest total weight gain (149.0 vs. 177.2 kg), feed efficiency ratio was superior for the cattle fed for 168 days. Carcass weight, spleen and front + hind feet weights as a percentage of slaughter weight, weight of kidney fat, percentage of kidney, pelvic, and heart fat, and yield grade all increased (P < 0.05) with feeding time. Bulls in the L group received a higher (P < 0.05) panel rating for juiciness, and the panel juiciness score was closely associated with tenderness measurements such as panel tenderness score, Warner Bratzler shear force value, and number of chews before swallowing. It is concluded that duration of finishing significantly influenced carcass, slaughter, and organoleptic beef quality traits of young EAR bulls.
