Zoometrical Body Measurements And Their Relation With Liveweight In Native Turkish Geese, Mustafa Saatci, Muammer Ti̇lki̇

The aims of this study were to determine the body measurements of native Turkish geese and to define the relationship between these measurements and liveweight. The differences in head diameter and neck length between the sexes became significant at 10, 12, 14 and 16 weeks of age (P < 0.05-0.01). The beak and wing lengths increased with age and were longer in males than in females at 12, 14 and 16 weeks of age. The effect of sex on body and trunk length was significant at 14 and 16 weeks (P < 0.05-0.01). Chest depth, girth and width increased with age. The positive correlations (0.88-0.97) of liveweight with head diameter, neck length, body length, trunk length, chest girth, wing length and metatarsus length at 2 weeks of age were highly significant. The most reliable prediction from the regression analyses was between liveweight and body length + chest girth in weeks 2 and 8 (R^2 = 94%). Our study presents the body measurements and the correlations between these measurements and liveweight in geese of different ages. These correlations might be used to evaluate the liveweight of studied geese population and for selection based on liveweight.

A seroepidemiological study of canine leishmaniasis was carried out in 220 healthy pet dogs from 11 different regions in Bulgaria allocated in 5 regions in southern Bulgaria: Plovdiv (n = 20), Stara Zagora (n = 20), Yambol (n = 20), Burgas (n = 20), and Blagoevgrad (n = 20), and 6 regions in northern Bulgaria: Varna (n = 20), Silistra (n = 20), Rousse (n = 20), Veliko Tarnovo (n = 20), Pleven (n = 20), and Montana (n = 20). The growth and survival of acid-adapted and nonadapted Escherichia coli O157:H7 were determined in strained, set-type, and synbiotic yoghurt and kefir. Acid-adapted or nonadapted E. coli O157:H7 were inoculated into the synbiotic and set-type yoghurt before and after the fermentation process. Survival of the inoculated E. coli O157:H7 in these products was examined during storage at 4 °C. Acid adaptation enhanced the survival of E. coli O157:H7 in kefir and strained yoghurt. Acid adaptation also enhanced the survival of E. coli O157:H7 in set-type yoghurt, which was inoculated after the fermentation process; however, acid-adapted cell inoculation before fermentation did not …

An 11-year-old female terrier brought to our clinic was diagnosed with chondroma located on the caudolateral side of the right distal humerus. During the clinical examination of the dog, swelling and lameness were observed on right forelimb. Following the operation, the subject had no lameness after removing the mass. Postoperative follow-up was done by phone with the owner of the patient in 6th and 12th months, and no lameness and swelling in the region was reported. Enterotoxemia In A Cow Due To Clostridium Perfringens Type A, Hakan Kalender, Ayşe Kiliç, Eray Atil

Enterotoxemia was diagnosed in a 3-year-old cow that died suddenly. Lesions of hemorrhagic enteritis were seen in the small intestine during necropsy. Lethal alpha toxin of Clostridium perfringens was detected in the intestinal contents by toxin neutralization test. C. perfringens type A was isolated from the intestinal contents and typed by multiplex PCR. Enterotoxemia should be considered as a cause of sudden death in cattle in Turkey.

The acute toxicity of carbaryl, methiocarb and carbosulfan to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; 1.92 ± 0.5 g) and guppies (Poecilia reticulata; 0.45 ± 0.04 g) was evaluated in 96-h toxicity tests under static conditions. Concentrations in the toxicity test ranged from 0.85 to 8.5 mg/l for carbaryl, from 0.7 to 28.0 mg/l for methiocarb, and from 0.031 to 12.5 mg/l for carbosulfan. Carbaryl and methiocarb were more toxic to rainbow trout than to guppies. However, compared with rainbow trout, guppies were more sensitive to carbosulfan. The incidence of mortality in fish increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing pesticide concentrations. The time required to kill 50% (LT_{50}) of the rainbow trout at the lowest concentrations of carbaryl, methiocarb, and carbosulfan was 51 h 12 min, 74 h 35 min, and 107 h 57 min, respectively. As insecticide concentrations were increased, LT_{50} values decreased (P < 0.05).

The seroprevalence of Brucellosis in human, sheep, and cattle populations was investigated in rural regions of Kırıkkale in Turkey. Serum samples were obtained from 1436 humans, and 3.2% (46) of the population was found to be positive by Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT) and 3.0% (43) gave positive results with the standard tube agglutination test (STAT). Immunoglobulin class analysis of RBPT-positive sera using the ELISA test gave positive results for 33 people (75%) with Brucella ELISA IgG and for 11 people (25%) with Brucella ELISA IgM. A total of 100 camel sausage samples from different retail markets in Aydın, located in southwest Turkey, were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp. by culture method. After sausage samples was preenriched in buffered peptone water and incubated 18-20 h at 37 °C. were transferred to Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth and Selenite broth, respectively, and incubated at 42 and 37 °C, respectively. The origin of horse, dog, cat, bovine, sheep, porcine, and goat meat was determined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, using species-specific primers. Test mixtures of meat were prepared by adding 5%, 2.5%, 1%, 0.5%, and 0.1% levels of pork, horse, cat, or dog meat to beef, sheep, and goat meat. Samples taken from those combinations were analyzed by PCR for species determination. The use of different types of Newcastle disease (ND) vaccine in different vaccination schemes has decreased the incidence of velogenic Newcastle disease (VND) in commercial poultry worldwide. In under-developed countries like Pakistan, these vaccination schemes are not successful due to free-range and backyard poultry production. This trial was conducted in 90 experimental chickens to develop an effective control against ND. The aim of the present study was to determine the changes in some blood biochemical and haematological parameters in healthy female goats after a 5-day parenteral treatment with gentamicin (4 mg/kg), tobramycin (5 mg/kg), amikacin (10 mg/kg), kanamycin (10 mg/kg), apramycin (20 mg/kg), and spectinomycin (20 mg/kg). The results indicated that aminoglycosides caused more severe alterations than aminocyclitols, especially on those parameters related to renal function. There was a tendency toward a rise in plasma creatinine and urea levels after aminoglycoside treatment, as well as a rise in urea levels after aminocyclitol administration. The mite formerly known as Varroa jacobsoni is one of the major problems in beekeeping worldwide. Recently, it was shown that this pest is not V. jacobsoni, which chiefly infests the nests of Apis cerana in the Malaysia-Indonesia region, and the widespread pest was recognized with the new name, V. destructor. Morphometric analysis was performed on collected Varroa specimens from various regions in Turkey and identified as V. destructor.

The aim of this study was to evaluate histopathological changes in the recipient site after transplantation of stored osteochondral allografts into articular cartilage defects in 8 dogs. In all dogs a single osteochondral allograft was transplanted into articular cartilage lesions. The results of the completed surgeries include a 12-month follow-up study. It was found that the stored osteochondral allografts were very firmly connected to the recipient tissue and no arthritis changes were noted.

The aim of this study was to investigate the seroepidemiology of equine influenza infection in Turkey, measured using the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay. Serum samples were obtained from 623 equids aged older than 4 years from 5 different geographical regions in Turkey during the years 2003-2005. Antibodies against equine influenza virus (EIV) were found in 194 (31.1%) of the 623 sera. Seropositivity rates were detected as 41.8% (171/409), 12.8% (11/86), and 9.4% (12/128) in horses, mules, and donkeys, respectively. This study was carried out with Damascus (Shami) goats and German Fawn x Hair goat (B1) crossbreds at Mustafa Kemal University. Animals were housed in semi-open sheds under semi-intensive conditions. Both groups were fed 600 g/head per day of concentrate and grazed in a pasture during lactation. Moulted cashmere was harvested by combing in February, March, and April, 2005, at 14-day intervals. This study was designed to determine the types of Clostridium perfringens and their toxins in diarrhoeic calves in Kars. For this purpose, 150 calves with diarrhoea, 13 dead calves, and 25 healthy calves of less than 1-month old were used. Faecal samples from the diarrhoeic and control calves and intestinal contents from the dead calves were collected and used to determine alpha, beta, and epsilon toxins produced by C. perfringens types using a commercially available ELISA test kit. An Anatolian wild sheep (Ovis orientalis anatolica) from a wild ruminant farm near Kırıkkale, Turkey, was necropsied. Parasitic nodules were situated beneath the pleura of the caudodorsal lobes of the lungs. First stage larvae of Cystocaulus ocreatus were detected both in bronchial fluid and in lung paraffin sections. Clinical and parasitological examinations of the other animals (4 dwarf goats and 3 wild sheep reared on the same farm) were also performed. The present study describes pathological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic findings in the respiratory tract and skin of chickens naturally infected with avian pox virus. Respiratory distress, depression, and cyanosis were found in the chickens upon clinical examination. At necropsy, erosion, crusts, and nodules were observed on the comb, wattle, and eyelids. Histopathological examination revealed that the epithelial cells in the stratum spinosum were hyperplastic, and that their cytoplasm contained large, eosinophilic inclusion bodies. Epithelial hyperplasia was also prominent in the mucosa of the trachea and bronchi, with characteristic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and severe submucosal accumulation of mononuclear cells. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition, digestibility, energy content, and digestible dry matter yield of 4 mixtures of different vetch varieties intercropped with the same barley at 3 different planting times under Eastern Anatolian conditions. Four different vetch species, i.e. common (Farukbey-2001), Hungarian (Tarım Beyazı-98), hairy (Selçuklu-2002), and wooly pod (Segmen-2002), intercropped with barley (Tokak-157) were utilized. The purpose of this study was the transformation and expression of the \beta -(1,3-1,4)-glucanase (lichenase) gene in Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus to create a recombinant probiotic for poultry and improve the thermostability of the lichenase enzyme. The recombinant plasmid TL1R containing the \beta -(1,3-1,4)-glucanase gene was introduced into S. salivarius subsp. thermophilus by electrotransformation. The expressing of the \beta -(1,3-1,4)-glucanase gene in S. salivarius subsp. thermophilus was confirmed on lichenan plate, SDS-PAGE, and zymogram analysis. This study was conducted in order to determine the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks, which are the primary vectors of this spirochete, as well as to investigate the effect of I. ricinus population density on the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. This study was performed to investigate the effects of various levels of sodium lactate on the microbiological quality and shelf life of sausages, and determine whether it can be used as a nitrite alternative. For this purpose, 0%, 0.6%, 1.2%, and 1.8% NaL and 0.125% NaNO_2 were added to sausage samples. Samples were vacuum-packaged and stored at 4 °C for 60 days and periodically analyzed for their sensorial properties, microbial counts (aerobic plate count, lactic acid bacteria, yeast-mould, and sulphite reducing anaerobic bacteria), and pH values. This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) on growth performance and immune characteristics of piglets. In all, 60 crossbred piglets (Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshire) were allocated to 2 dietary treatments; 3 replications of 10 pigs were used for each treatment, and all piglets were weaned at 35 days and fed for 23 days. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG) improved (1.44% vs. 1.36%) in piglets fed the FSBM diet and feed gain ratio (FGR) decreased by 5.56% (P < 0.05) compared to the controls (soybean meal treatment). The level of serum IgG decreased 27.2% (P < 0.01) in piglets fed FSBM. Lymphocytes from whole blood had a lower proliferative response to concanavalin A (ConA) (P < 0.01) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the splenocytes of piglets fed FSBM also showed lower proliferative response to ConA (P < 0.05) and LPS (P < 0.01). The results indicated that FSBM was beneficial to growth performance and decreased the immune response to soybean protein in piglets.

The study was designed to determine the types of Clostridium perfringens and their toxins in sheep with suspected enterotoxemia in Kars province. For this purpose, 260 dead sheep with suspected enterotoxemia and 35 clinically healthy sheep (controls) of different ages and breeds were used. Intestinal contents of each sheep were collected and used to determine alpha, beta, and epsilon toxins of C. perfringens using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the latex agglutination test (LAT). The aim of this study was to detect the presence of the genes for some virulence factors in Escherichia coli isolates from clinical bovine mastitis. A total of 100 E. coli isolates, each isolated from individual cows in different herds between 2000 and 2005, were examined. Two multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were used to detect the presence of the genes encoding Shiga toxins 1 and 2 (stx1 and stx2), intimin (eaeA), heat-stable enterotoxin a (Sta), and F5 (K99), F41, and F17 fimbriae.
