In 2000-2001, the frequency of metritis cases due to Klebsiella pneumoniae was investigated in Thoroughbred breeding mares in the Marmara region of Turkey, where most racehorses are reared. In addition, Thoroughbred stallions from the breeding centre in the İzmit district were examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae. Biotypes and capsule types of the isolates were detected, and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. Intrauterine swabs taken from 56 mares with metritis, and semen samples and swabs of urethral fossa from 27 stallions were investigated. Heparin is a heterogeneous mixture of highly charged glycosaminoglycans that can exert a variety of biological and biochemical effects. Increasing attention is being paid to its role in cellular processes such as angiogenesis, cellular attachment, growth modulation and smooth muscle cell proliferation. The characterisation of cellular receptors for heparin-binding proteins is a rational step in the quest to elucidate the biochemical basis of specific binding and heparin-mediated responses. The proportion of Turkey's cattle that were from high-gene cattle breeds and their crosses has increased from 0.8% to 60.7% over the last four decades. While the total number of cattle declined by 1.65 million head, total milk and meat production increased by 298% and 428% to 8.91 million and 359,000 tons, respectively. At the same time, milk per cow and meat per head increased by 184% and 144% to 1688 kg and 171 kg, respectively. This study was conducted to determine leptospirosis from aborted bovine fetuses. Tissue sections of the liver, lung, spleen and kidney were stained with avidin-biotin peroxidase complex, and antigen localization was examined. These examinations showed positive staining in eight (24.24%) out of 33 fetuses for the presence of leptospira antigens. In these eight cases, leptospira antigens were found in three lung (37.5%), two liver (25%), four kidney (50%) and four spleen (50%) samples. The effects of different daily feeding rates on the specific growth rate and food conversion ratio of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri) were investigated in order to determine the optimum daily feeding rate for fish with an initial mean weight of 1736 ± 37 g. To this end, a Latin Square experimental set-up was designed consisting of four groups of 25 fish fed a rainbow trout diet at four different daily feeding rates (0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50% body weight/day) for four 2-week periods. In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. To compare the antioxidant effect of black seed, well-known antioxidants, vitamin E and selenium mineral, were used. This study was conducted on 40 rats that were divided into five groups of eight. This study was carried out to investigate live weight, wool production and some body measurements of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karyaka B_1) sheep. The Karayaka breed is raised in the Black Sea region, while the Sakız (Chios) breed is raised in the coastal areas of western Anatolia. Çiğ köfte is a special Turkish meal prepared from minced meat, bulgur, onions, garlic and different spices. In this study, a total of 50 çiğ köfte samples sold in Ankara were microbiologically analysed in order to determine their microbiological quality. The numbers of total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, lactobacilli, micrococci/staphylococci, coagulase-positive staphylococci, enterobacteriaceae, coliform, enterococci, pseudomonas, yeasts and molds were determined by drop plating, whereas the B. cereus count was determined by spread plating, and the isolation of Salmonella involved enrichment procedures. Cyclodextrins are used extensively in food, cosmetic, drug and chemical industries to increase aqueous solubility and stability, and reduce or eliminate the unpleasant taste and smell of many products. Experiments were conducted to examine the effect of a pre-haemolytic dose of methyl b-cyclodextrin (MBCD) on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes collected from sheep, cattle and humans. Heparinised blood collected from these three species were analysed within 3 h of collection. Erythrocyte suspensions were mixed with MBCD to give concentrations of 2 mM, 4 mM or 6 mM cyclodextrin. The optimum UV duration times of eggs were examined in order to develop a simple and safe method for inducing androgenetic development in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The yield of androgenetic haploid O. niloticus to the pigmentation stage was 18.53 ± 5.3% (relative to controls) with an optimal UV irradiation dose of 540 Jm^{-2} (at 150 µWcm^{-2 }) for 6 min. Most embryos developing after fertilisation with normal spermatozoa showed abnormal morphology and a haploid number of chromosomes (n = 22). The success of oocyte denucleation was also assessed by using the recessive "blond" skin pigmentation character.

This study was carried out to determine Eimeria infection in goats in nine different districts in Van province in Turkey. Faecal samples (approximately 3-5 g) were obtained from the rectums of 242 goats. The samples were examined by Sheather's sugar flotation technique and determined microscopically for the presence of oocysts. Eimeria species were identified following sporulation of faeces in a thin layer of 2.5% potassium dichromate for one or two weeks at 25 ºC. The clinical, laboratory, ultrasonographic and pathological characteristics of a poorly differentiated pancreatic carcinoma in a 6-year-old cat are described in this study. Clinical abnormalities included severe dehydration, icterus, and partial alopecia on the medial surface of the limbs and ventral abdomen. A nodular mass was detected on abdominal palpation. Ultrasonography of the abdomen revealed a hypoechoic mass including hyperechoic and anechoic areas in the pancreatic region, and several hypoechoic areas and dilatation of the biliary duct and gallbladder in the liver. This study was carried out to determine the microbiological and chemical quality and the meat yields of shrimp (P. semisulcatus) caught from the Antalya region. Twenty shrimp samples were used for microbiological analyses, 36 for chemical quality analyses and 60 for meat yield analyses. According to microbiological findings, the average numbers of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, coliforms, staphylococcus-micrococcus, and V. parahaemolyticus in shrimp meat were 5.8 x 10^4 cfu/g, 1.9 x 10^2 cfu/g, 9.2 x 10^2 cfu/g, and 7.5 x 10^1 cfu/g, respectively. The various blood parameters including the amount of haemoglobin, haematocrit value, erythrocyte and leukocyte count, and the differential percentage of white blood cells were determined from blood taken intravenously. The haemoglobin and erythrocyte values were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) higher in 5-7-month-old Tuj sheep grazing in an open field than in 2-3-month-old male Tuj sheep feeding in a closed system. The erythrocyte count was found to be higher in 2-3-month-old female Tuj sheep in comparison to males. The haemoglobin, leukocyte and haematocrit values were also higher in this group of animals, though this was not statistically significant. The erythrocyte, leukocyte, haemoglobin, haematocrit values and differential percentage of white blood cells were not different in 5-7-month-old male and female Tuj sheep grazing in an open area. The erythrocyte number decreased after parturition in respect to the oestrus and pregnancy period. This decrease was statistically significant. The erythrocyte values were 10.2 x 10^6 /mm^3 before oestrus, 9.5 x 10^6 /mm3 during pregnancy and 8.2 x 10^6 /mm^3 after parturition. The haemoglobin value decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during pregnancy. The leukocyte number was found to be less during pregnancy in comparison to other periods; it was 7.7 ± 1.9 x 10^3 /mm^3 during pregnancy, 9.3 ± 1.9 x 10^3 /mm^3 before oestrus, and 9.7 ± 2.5 x 10^3 /mm^3 after parturation. The lymphocyte percentage increased significantly (p < 0.05) during the pregnancy period.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of cadmium on oxytocin-induced myometrium contractions in rats, cows and cats in vitro. The frequency was 12.20 ± 1.2, 11.25 ± 2.7 and 10.70 ± 2.5/10 min, respectively, after 0.01 mM oxytocin induced with myometrial samples in rats, cows and cats. The peak amplitude was 3.84 ± 0.50, 3.44 ± 0.65 and 3.35 ± 0.45 g, respectively, after oxytocin induction. The frequency and peak amplitude decreased after the addition of 0.01 mM cadmium chloride (CdCl_2). The frequency was 1.2 ± 0.4 (p < 0.001), 2.5 ± 0.5 (p < 0.001) and 2.0 ± 0.6(p < 0.001), respectively, and the peak amplitude was 0.7 ± 0.3 (p < 0.001), 1.2 ± 0.2 (p < 0.001) and 0.8 ± 0.4 g (p < 0.001), respectively, in rat, cow and cat myometrium. Finally, the myometrium contractions were completely inhibited in the three species. In conclusion, the effects of cadmium may inhibit both calcium channels and the intracellular-induced mechanism.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of rations containing 0, 30, 60 and 90 ppm Yucca schidigera extract on egg production, feed intake, feed efficiency, egg quality and some blood parameters of quail. Two hundred and forty, eight-week-old Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into one control group and three treatment groups of similar mean weight and egg production levels, comprising 60 quail each. In this study, a total of 120 staphylococci strains, 46 coagulase positive and 74 coagulase negative, isolated from chickens were identified according to the characteristics of their cultural, biochemical and some antibiotic properties. In this research, the effects of some alternative feed additives for antibiotic growth promoters on performance and gut microflora were examined using 500, one-day-old Ross 508 broiler chicks. Commercial corn-soy-based broiler starter and finisher diets were formulated as basal diets for control treatment. Basal diets were supplemented with an antibiotic growth promoter, a probiotic, a prebiotic (mannan oligosaccharide) and a humic-acid-based mixture, respectively.
