CONTEXT: In animal models, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is associated with increased Roux limb intestinal glucose uptake that may contribute to early metabolic benefits, though prospective clinical studies are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that Roux limb glucose uptake would increase relative to baseline in a cohort of patients undergoing RYGB. Debilitating pain is the primary clinical feature of osteoarthritis (OA) that drives the enormous healthcare costs. Osteoarthritis-related pain is often treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which effectively relieve pain and inflammation by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Antibodies directed against nerve growth factor (NGF) were tested some time ago as an alternative potential analgesic for musculoskeletal pain, including osteoarthritis-related pain. Background: The optimal surgical approach for inguinal hernias in adolescent patients remains an area of debate. While high ligation (HL) for indirect hernias is standard in younger children, floor repair (FR), usually with mesh, is preferred in adults due to the higher incidence of direct hernias and weakness of the abdominal wall. Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) are infections that occur in or around the area where a surgery was recently performed. They are estimated to account for 20% of all healthcare associated infection, and lead to an increase in morbidity and mortality. Perioperative care bundles show promise in reducing SSIs in adults but are not often used in neonatal surgery. Infections in babies after surgery are less common than adults but carry significant morbidity in a fragile patient.

Objective. This study was conducted to determine whether utilization of the superior root of ansa cervicalis (SRAC) as the donor for phrenic nerve (PN) transfer is technically feasible. Background. In patients with high cervical spinal cord injury resulting in diaphragmatic paralysis, another donor, the spinal accessory nerve, has been used successfully to reinnervate the PN and restore diaphragmatic function. Crohn’s disease (CD) is a heterogeneous and multifactorial inflammatory bowel disease with a significant global health impact. Genetic and lifestyle factors contribute to its etiology, emphasizing dysregulation of intestinal and dietary habits. Our study aimed to identify fecal metabolites from treatment-naïve, pediatric sufferers of CD, which allowed us to investigate the underlying biochemical perturbations associated with the disease, highlighting potential, translational targets. Using a Waters Acquity UPLC coupled with a Xevo-TQ-S mass spectrometer, we quantified >500 metabolites in fecal samples (n=72) of pediatric CD sufferers. Tendon and ligament injuries are debilitating conditions across species. Poor regenerative capacities of these tissues limit restoration of original functions. The first study evaluated the effect of cellular administration on tendon/ligament injuries in horses using meta-analysis. The cellular administration was effective in restoring ultrasonographic echogenicity and increasing vascularity during early phase of healing. Additionally, it improved microstructural organization of healed tissue in terms of cellularity and fiber alignment. However, the study did not support its use for increasing rate of return to performance, expression/deposition of tendon-specific genes/proteins, or mechanical properties.

Glycolysis is central to homeostasis of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells in the avascular intervertebral disc. Since the glucose transporter, GLUT1, is a highly enriched phenotypic marker of NP cells, we hypothesized that it is vital for the development and postnatal maintenance of the disc. Surprisingly, primary NP cells treated with 2 well-characterized GLUT1 inhibitors maintained normal rates of glycolysis and ATP production, indicating intrinsic compensatory mechanisms. We showed in vitro that NP cells mitigated GLUT1 loss by rewiring glucose import through GLUT3. Lower kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratios observed in synovial fluid of ACL rupture (ACLR) rats suggests decreased activity of tryptophan metabolizing enzyme, Ido, known to be secreted by MSCs to promote T-reg expansion and Th17 suppression. This study aims to characterize the immunomodulatory capacity of pharmacologically mobilized MSCs in conjunction with exogenously delivered Ido. Background: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) is a typical immunogenic malignant tumor with a dismal 5-year survival rate lower than 20%. Although miRNA-3648 (miR-3648) is expressed abnormally in EA, its impact on the tumor immune microenvironment remains unknown. In this study, we sought to identify immune-related genes (IRGs) that are targeted by miR-3648 and develop an EA multigene signature.

Introduction: This retrospective review aimed to compare clinical outcomes between patients with descending aortic dissections, with and without organ malperfusion, who were managed with thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) or best medical therapy (BMT).

Methods: Thirty-eight patients diagnosed with descending aortic dissections between 2013 and 2020 were identified for analysis.
