Emotional Regulation Among High School Varsity Basketball Coaches, Dan Ourian
Applied Sport & Performance Psychology | Faculty Dissertations and Theses
As the field of sport psychology has grown, researchers and applied practitioners have turned their attention from working solely with athletes to working with the coaches who lead those athletes. Coaches, with their various roles, constraints and stressors, are performers in their own right, in need of assistance with their mental performance (Giges, Petitpas & Vernacchia, 2004). The present study examined how emotional regulation is valued as a psychological skill among 10 high school varsity basketball coaches. Through semi structured interviews and thematic content analysis, the coaches' view on how emotions impact their coaching practice is explored. Results regarding their …
Creating Scholar Athletes: Investigating The Academic Support Provided To High School Student Athletes In Southern California High Schools, Melinda Love
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
This study used semi-structured interviews of athletic directors to present a descriptive narrative of academic support provided to student athletes in five Southern California high schools. These interviews highlighted what supports were provided as well as structures that would better support student athletes. The impetus of this study was the mixed findings regarding the academic performance of student athletes in comparison to their non-athlete peers. While high school students must satisfy academic requirements to remain eligible to participate, California high schools are not required to provide academic support to their student athletes (California Interscholastic Federation, 2017). Without an obligation to …

Coaching And Concussions: Prevention, Education, And Perspective, Colby J. Felts
Honors Thesis
The large participation of players and coaches in football has made it one of the most popular sports in America. Concussions have specifically gained national attention in football due to frequent, high impact collisions. A concussion injury poses a unique threat in high school football because of the developing adolescent brain and high participation numbers. Additionally, lack of medical personnel to diagnose concussions at the high school level imposes a legal duty on the coaches. The thesis develops a recommended plan of action for directors of Iowa high school football to assist in preserving the future of the sport. A …

Master of Science in Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Projects
Introduction: Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (MTBIs) are some of the most common injuries that occur in the adolescent athlete population, and yet experts believe that MTBI’s are underreported. Most state athletic organizations require annual Pre-Participation Examinations in order to participate in high school sports. The purpose of this study was to research the effectiveness of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Pre-Participation Exam (OHSAA PPE) form in eliciting previous MTBIs.
Method: A descriptive, correlational study was conducted with 43 high school football players at a mass-screening event.
Results: There was a statistically significant underreporting of MTBI’s on …
