Structural Variations In Circulating Lipopolysaccharide May Increase Severity Of Exercise-Induced Heat Illness, Skylar Wright May 2018

Structural Variations In Circulating Lipopolysaccharide May Increase Severity Of Exercise-Induced Heat Illness, Skylar Wright

University Scholar Projects

Previous investigations at the Falmouth Road Race (FRR; Falmouth, MA) suggest that combined exercise, heat, and dehydration stress increase circulating lipopolysaccharide, associated binding proteins, and downstream immune signaling. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacterial membranes, may be released into circulation from the gut with increased gastrointestinal permeability observed post-exercise. Circulating LPS activates host immune cell signaling that can lead to inflammatory responses that upregulate pro-inflammatory gene expression (eg TNF-α, IL-1β), which if unchecked, may lead to pathophysiology (eg cell pyroptosis, exertional heat stroke (EHS), and sepsis). While subjects of the 2015 FRR (n=30) had elevated core temperature …

Effects Of Heart Rate Variability-Guided Prescription On The Physiological Outcomes Of Crossfit Training, Nicholas B. Drake May 2018

Effects Of Heart Rate Variability-Guided Prescription On The Physiological Outcomes Of Crossfit Training, Nicholas B. Drake

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effectiveness of heart-rate variability as a monitoring and intensity-prescription tool for CrossFit.

Methods:Twenty-five recreational trained males and females were randomized into two groups, experimental (EXP) and control (CON) prior to the intervention. Prior to any assessments, all participants established a 14-day baseline period for their morning heart-rate variability. Both groups underwent pre-training assessment for work capacity, whole body strength, maximal oxygen consumption and body composition. All participants followed a 21-day training program followed by another week of testing, repeated twice. During the training, a rolling seven-day average of …

Validity And Reliability Of The Ymca Submaximal Cycle Test Using An Electrically Braked Ergometer, Justin Kidd May 2018

Validity And Reliability Of The Ymca Submaximal Cycle Test Using An Electrically Braked Ergometer, Justin Kidd

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Purpose: To test the effect of using an electrically braked ergometer on the validity and reliability of the YMCA submaximal cycle test.

Methods: 22 male and 13 female subjects ages 19 to 31 completed one maximal treadmill test and four submaximal cycle tests to measure and estimate VO2max, respectively. The maximal tests involved recording heart rate and VO2 during graded exercise until volitional fatigue; an actual max was verified when two out of the following criteria: respiratory Exchange Ratio > 1.1, VO2 plateau (< 150 ml/min increase in VO2 during final stage), and achievement of 90% age-predicted HR max (or completed …

The cases include background information and case descriptions of three individual patients, their evaluation and rehabilitation plans are included. The first case discusses an athlete with a lumbar disc herniation that underwent a microdiscectomy. This case study was revised from it’s original version and submitted to the National Athletic …

Non-Linear Analysis Of Visual-Motor Tracking Pre- And Post-Heading In Collegiate Female Soccer Athletes, Sonia Delbusso May 2018

Non-Linear Analysis Of Visual-Motor Tracking Pre- And Post-Heading In Collegiate Female Soccer Athletes, Sonia Delbusso

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Context: There has been minimal examination of the long-term effects of sub-concussive events, particularly related to non-linear aspects of motor performance. Examining the structure of performance, using nonlinear techniques, following sub-concussive events may lend insight into subtle, but significant changes in motor behavior.

Objective: This study examined the effect of performing a bout of headers on visual motor control in a group of female soccer athletes. We specifically examined the amount of error during visual-motor tracking (root mean squared error; RMSE), the regularity of the movement structure (sample entropy; SampEn), and the lag present between the target signal and the …

The Effect Of Duration Of Foam Rolling On Muscle Recovery, Vincent Lam Ting Luk May 2018

The Effect Of Duration Of Foam Rolling On Muscle Recovery, Vincent Lam Ting Luk

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

PURPOSE: Foam rollers are commonly used by athletes, trainers, and therapists to accelerate muscle recovery. The current research suggests foam rolling (FR) may be beneficial in reducing muscle soreness. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of foam rolling duration on muscle soreness and muscle function (isokinetic leg strength and muscle fatigability). METHODS: Sixteen males (age: 21.8 ± 2.5 yrs, height: 180.8 ± 8.3cm, weight: 82.5 ± 9.6kg) performed 10 sets of 10 reps at 60% 1-RM on a seated leg press machine to induce muscle soreness. For each participant, one leg received no foam rolling treatment; …

Post-Concussion Symptom Score As A Possible Predictor Of Protracted Recovery In High School Athletes, Kimberly Dawn Phillips May 2018

Post-Concussion Symptom Score As A Possible Predictor Of Protracted Recovery In High School Athletes, Kimberly Dawn Phillips

Graduate Theses

As concussion research shifts from diagnostic to managing return to play (RTF), many studies have sought to establish safe guidelines for recovery. Computer-based neuropsychological programs measure cognitive function performance typically affected by brain injury and include a self-report post-concussion symptoms scale. The use of the total score of a post-concussion symptoms scale as a possible predictor of protracted recovery in high school athletes following injury is still being researched. This study used stored data obtained from the Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center involving concussed high school athletes with a post-concussion symptom score and subsequent documentation of recovery time. A one-way ANOVA …

The Effects Of Dietary Nitrate Supplementation On Swimming Performance In Collegiate Swimmers 2018, Christopher Daniel Mosconi May 2018

The Effects Of Dietary Nitrate Supplementation On Swimming Performance In Collegiate Swimmers 2018, Christopher Daniel Mosconi

Master's Theses

The desire for performance enhancement is a common goal amongst athletes. Recently a number of studies have reported various performance enhancing effects of dietary nitrate (NO3-) via beetroot juice (BRJ) supplementation. Research has indicated that the various performance enhancing effects of BRJ can be attributed to a decrease resting systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and submaximal volume of oxygen consumption (VO2), while increasing vasodilation and mitochondrial efficiency. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether BRJ supplementation improves swimming performance in collegiate level swimmers. Methods: Eight collegiate trained swimmers underwent a double-blind 5-day chronic supplementation …
