Pre-training muscle characteristics of subjects who are obese determine how well exercise training will improve their insulin responsiveness. J Strength Cond Res 31(3): 798–808, 2017—Only half of prediabetic subjects who are obese who underwent exercise training without weight loss increased their insulin responsiveness. We hypothesized that those who improved their insulin responsiveness might have pretraining characteristics favoring a positive response to exercise training. Thirty nondiabetic subjects who were obese volunteered for 8 weeks of either strength training or endurance training. During training, subjects increased their caloric intake to prevent weight loss. Insulin responsiveness by euglycemic clamps and muscle fiber composition, …
The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In any athletic event, the ability to appropriately distribute energy is essential to prevent premature fatigue prior to the completion of the event. In sport science literature this is termed “pacing.” Within the past decade, research aiming to better understand the underlying mechanisms influencing the selection of an athlete’s pacing during exercise has dramatically increased. It is suggested that pacing is a combination of anticipation, knowledge of the end-point, prior experience and sensory feedback. In order to better understand the role each of these factors have in the regulation of pace, studies have often manipulated various conditions known to influence …

Running Injuries Due To Strike Patterns, Jamie M. Rogers
Running Injuries Due To Strike Patterns, Jamie M. Rogers
The Kabod
Running is a very repetitive activity that can lead to surmountable stresses to the body over time that could lead to injury. Running biomechanics can influence the effects that the body will experience. This paper will discuss the biomechanical effects that relate to two different strike patterns: rearfoot and forefoot. Research will be examined as to how the strike patterns can influence the major lower extremity joints: ankle, knee, and hip. Common injuries during running as related to strike pattern are also discussed through conclusions based on research studies.

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship
NSAIDs are commonly used among athletes for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this research is to gain insight on Division III athletes’view and opinions of NSAIDs. A survey was developed incorporating the Theory of Planned Behavior and distributed to all winter and spring athletic teams of one Midwestern Dill University. By utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study found attitude toward behavior as the strongest predictor of behavioral intention (p < .001), while both Perceived Behavioral control (p < .001) and Intention (p < .001) were statistically significant predictors of behavior. Another finding from the study was that athletes perceived less than 25% of their teammates as taking NSAIDs. Displaying the importance of an athlete s own personal values and opinions of NSAID use was the strongest predictor of intentions. Further assessment should include more athletes to get a better representation of the athletic department.

Athletic Participation And Academic Success In Junior College, Derek J. Staley
Master of Arts in Sport Management
The success or lack of success for student-athletes in the classroom has been a debate for a long time. Does athletic participation help or hinder academic success? Research is somewhat conflicted at the high school and college level whether athletic participation leads to higher academic achievement. A study done at the high school level seems to show some correlation, but studies done at the college level are somewhat inconclusive. This project is an attempt to clarify what happens when students participate in athletics at other college levels and what effect that participation has on academic achievement. This project will help …

Are Preseason Functional And Biomechanical Measures Associated With Lower Quadrant Injury Risk In Division Iii Athletes?, Natalie Ellis, Jordan Petersen, Jordon Reyes, Victor Wilson, Cj Zita
Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy
A recent trend in sports medicine research is to determine risk of injury during sport based on preseason functional performance test (FPT) measures.
Equivocal findings associated with prior studies may leave PTs with uncertainty as to which FPT, or combination of FPTs, can best identify athletes who have a greater risk for injury.
Previous studies have utilized "low-tech" FPT measures: standing long jump (SLJ), single-leg hop (SLH), lower extremity functional test (LEFT), and the Y-balance test (YBT) (1,3,4).
These "low-tech" options may not be able to identify potential deficits that could be collected with "high-tech" measures (e.g., DVJ measures collected …

The Neuropsychology Of Sport And Performance, Arthur C. Maerlender
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Neuropsychological theory has been a mainstay for understanding pathology within the brain-behavior context. However, our theories for predicting superior behavior are not as well developed. Sport neuropsychology was developed on the presumption that athletes represent a population in a relatively well-controlled environment for studying brain pathology due to injury. This study of pathology within a high-performance environment has been responsible for identifying the effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) on individual functioning. Far less attention has been paid to the other end of the performance continuum, and yet, viable brain-behavior hypotheses should hold true across the spectrum of function …

Validity And Reliability Of Baseline Testing In A Standardized Environment, Kathryn L. Higgins, Todd Caze, Arthur C. Maerlender
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Objective — The Immediate Postconcussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) is a computerized neuropsychological test battery commonly used to determine cognitive recovery from concussion based on comparing post-injury scores to baseline scores. This model is based on the premise that ImPACT baseline test scores are a valid and reliable measure of optimal cognitive function at baseline. Growing evidence suggests that this premise may not be accurate and a large contributor to invalid and unreliable baseline test scores may be the protocol and environment in which baseline tests are administered. This study examined the effects of a standardized environment and administration …

Objective: Hundreds of scientific publications are produced annually that involve the measurement of cortisol in saliva. Intra- and inter-laboratory variation in salivary cortisol results has the potential to contribute to crossstudy inconsistencies in findings, and the perception that salivary cortisol results are unreliable. This study rigorously estimates sources of measurement variability in the assay of salivary cortisol within and between established international academic-based laboratories that specialize in saliva analyses. One hundred young adults (Mean age: 23.10 years; 62 females) donated 2 mL of whole saliva by passive drool. Each sample was split into multiple- 100 μL aliquots and …

School-based concussion management programs cover thousands of young athletes, yet there is little in the way of research to assess program processes or outcomes. This study examined the referral patterns of consultants working with ten high school concussion management programs. In addition to the number of referrals made to specialists, other potential outcome variables were explored. The sample included over 5,000 athlete-seasons and 298 concussions managed directly by certified athletic trainers. All programs used computerized neuropsychological testing (both baseline and post injury). Two groups were compared: five programs used a clinical neuropsychologist (NP) as the testing consultant and five used …

Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is often debilitating and may be affected by a number of intrinsic and environmental factors. Alterations in neurocognitive function and attention may contribute to repetitive injury in those with CAI and influence postural control strategies. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in attentional functioning and static postural control among groups of Comparison, Coper and CAI participants and assess the relationship between them within each of the groups. Recruited participants performed single-limb balance trials and completed the CNS Vital Signs (CNSVS) computer-based assessment to assess their attentional function. Center …

Sandbagging On The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment And Cognitive Testing (Impact) In A High School Athlete Population, Kathryn L. Higgins, Robert L. Denny, Arthur C. Maerlender
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) is a computerized neuropsychological test battery commonly used to assess cognitive functioning after a concussion. It is recommended that application of ImPACT utilizes a baseline administration so athletes have an individualized baseline with which to compare post-injury results should they sustain a concussion. It has been suggested that athletes may provide suboptimal effort, called “sandbagging,” in order to return to their baseline cognitive scores, and thus to play, more quickly. This research examines ImPACT baseline scores when high school athletes were asked to attempt to “sandbag,” and compares those scores with scores …
