Transformational Leadership In Club Sports: An Instrument For Evaluation And Assessment, Nathan Shelby Hutchens
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Campus Recreation and its programs can be used as a way to combat the national trends of decreasing enrollment and retention (Weaver, Forte, & McFadden, 2017; Kampf & Teske, 2013). In fact, 62% of students indicate that Campus Recreation programs are a factor when choosing an institution and 67% indicate that recreation programs were a factor when deciding to stay at a particular institution (Forrester, 2014). As a program within Campus Recreation, Club Sports specifically is perceived to have the greatest health and wellbeing benefits out of all Campus Recreation programming (Lower, Turner, & Petersen, 2013). Due to the voluntary …
The Effects Of Mild Dehydration On Cycling Performance In The Heat, Elika Hamer
The Effects Of Mild Dehydration On Cycling Performance In The Heat, Elika Hamer
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract
Introduction: Hypohydration exceeding 2% of body mass (bm), affected by heat and thirst level, leads to decreased athletic performance. Both physiological and psychological factors of dehydration have an impact on an athlete’s perceived performance. However, it is unclear whether the effects of psychological, physiological, or both have a negative impact on athletic performance caused by mild hypohydration. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if mild hypohydration affects exercise performance in trained cyclists while blinding their hydration state. Methodology: Eleven competitive male cyclists participated in two blinded experimental trials, hypohydrated and euhydrated states by intra-venous infusions. The …

The Contribution Of Solid Food On Total Water Intake In 3-13 Y Children, Audrey Caroline Smith
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: Adequate hydration is important element of good health. Several studies indicate that the majority of kids are hypohydrated and do not meet dietary water intake guidelines. Some scientist also suggest that good hydration might be achieved by large consumption of food that are rich in water (i.e. fruits and vegetables). However, the information of food consumption on total water intake in children is limited.
Purpose: We evaluated the contribution of water from solid food on total water intake in children.
Methodology: For this cross-sectional study 81 children (35 female) 3 to 13 years old were randomly recruited to participate. …

Examining College Student Athlete Attitudes and Behaviors Toward Baseline Neurocognitive Concussion Testing
FryK, Anderson, M, Anderson, M, Schatz, P, Elbin, RJ: University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas
Context: Examining athletes’ attitudes toward concussion diagnosis, management, and treatment can lead to improved multi-faceted management of a concussion injury. Although attitudes towards concussion injuries have been studied, the examination of athletes’ attitudes towards baseline computerized neurocognitive testing is understudied and is warranted. Objective: To examine the relationship between sex, concussion history, and previous exposure to baseline testing on athletes’ perceptions of effort provided during baseline testing and the utility of neurocognitive testing. Methods: …
The Ergogenic Effects Of Acute Citrulline Malate Supplementation On Weightlifting Performance In Trained Females, Lauren Nicole Wethington
The Ergogenic Effects Of Acute Citrulline Malate Supplementation On Weightlifting Performance In Trained Females, Lauren Nicole Wethington
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
All previous investigations evaluating the effectiveness of citrulline malate (CM) as an ergogenic aid involved male subjects. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the ergogenic effects of CM supplementation on upper- and lower-body, submaximal, resistance exercise performance in trained females. Based on previous results, we hypothesized supplementation with CM would increase performance in females. This study utilized a randomized, double blind, crossover design. Testing trials took place within the Human Performance Laboratory and/or the University of Arkansas: Donna Axum Fitness Center. An a priori sample of 14 subjects were required, therefore this study included 15 female. Subjects reported …
The Effect Of Thirst And Pharyngeal Stimulation On Exercise Performance, Jordan E. Smith
The Effect Of Thirst And Pharyngeal Stimulation On Exercise Performance, Jordan E. Smith
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine if activating the oral- pharyngeal receptors through the act of swallowing plays a role in enhancing exercise performance. It was hypothesized that stimulation of the pharyngeal receptors through the act of swallowing (D trial) increases exercise performance when compared to infusing the same amount of liquid via a nasogastric tube (I trial). Methods: Five trained male cyclists (31 ± 5 years; 74.7 ± 4 kg; 57 ± 3 mL/kg/min) performed two trials in a counterbalanced fashion, each consisting of 120 minutes cycling in an environment at 35°C and 30% RH at …

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
NCAA Division I-A College Football post-season play is currently determined by a controversial BCS Bowl system. Due to the massive differences in compensation for playing in differing bowl games, heated debates arise every year as to who deserves places in the prestigious BCS bowl games. Without a round-robin approach, in which every team plays every other, there would be no absolute measure of which teams deserve BCS births. We developed a scenario involving a pseudo-playoff system to be implemented at the end of regular season conference play to create unique matchups to increase comparisons of teams across the nation. The …
