Rehabilitation Practice and Science

In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of robotic training on the mobility of children with cerebral palsy. The PubMed, Cochrane Library, PEDro, and Embase databases were searched for relevant studies from their inception to June 17, 2023. We selected studies that (1) were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), (2) included patients with cerebral palsy aged years, (3) compared robotic training with conventional rehabilitation alone, and (4) reported mobility outcomes. Continuous variables are expressed as standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. We included …

Action Observation Training Reduces Freezing Of Gait Among Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease: A Systematic Review, Ivan Iton, Morgan Phillips, Kylie Reardon, Katlyn Scarpinella, Eileen Woodcock, James M. Smith

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Recent evidence suggested action observation training (AOT) may benefit individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) experiencing freezing of gait (FoG). The purpose of this study was to determine if AOT can effectively decrease FoG among people with PD. Method: This review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered a priori with PROSPERO. The databases PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PEDro and PROSPERO were searched. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled studies, an intervention with AOT, adult subjects with PD, published in a journal, and written in English. Study quality was evaluated with the APTA Critical Appraisal Tool for …

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (Tens) For Chronic Pain - An Overview Of Cochrane Reviews (Review), William Gibson, Benedict M. Wand, Catherine Meads, Mark J. Catley, Neil E. O'Connell

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Chronic pain, considered to be pain lasting more than three months, is a common and often difficult to treat condition that can significantly impact upon function and quality of life. Treatment typically includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is an adjunct non-pharmacological treatment commonly recommended by clinicians and often used by people with pain.

Objectives: To provide an overview of evidence from Cochrane Reviews of the effectiveness of TENS to reduce pain in adults with chronic pain (excluding headache or migraine). To provide an overview of evidence from Cochrane Reviews of the safety of …

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Older adults are known to have increased falls rates and functional decline following hospital discharge, with substantial economic healthcare costs. This systematic review aimed to synthesise the evidence for effective falls prevention interventions in older adults recently discharged from hospital.

Methods: Literature searches of six databases of quantitative studies conducted from 1990 to June 2017, reporting falls outcomes of falls prevention interventions for community-dwelling older adults discharged from hospital were included. Study quality was assessed using a standardised JBI critical appraisal tool (MAStARI) and data pooled using Rev-Man Review Manager®

Results: Sixteen studies (total sample size N= 3,290, from …

Is Heavy Eccentric Calf Training Superior To Wait-And-See, Sham Rehabilitation, Traditional Physiotherapy And Other Exercise Interventions For Pain And Function In Mid-Portion Achilles Tendinopathy?, Myles Murphy, Mervyn Travers, William Gibson Jan 2018

Is Heavy Eccentric Calf Training Superior To Wait-And-See, Sham Rehabilitation, Traditional Physiotherapy And Other Exercise Interventions For Pain And Function In Mid-Portion Achilles Tendinopathy?, Myles Murphy, Mervyn Travers, William Gibson

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy (AT) is prevalent amongst athletic and non-athletic populations with pain, stiffness and impaired function typically reported. While different management options exist, loading protocols remain the best available intervention and have been shown to be effective in the management of AT. Trials investigating loading in AT have used a variety of different protocols, and recent narrative reviews suggest that no protocol is superior to another when comparing outcomes in pain and function. However, there has been no systematic review or meta-analysis completed to determine this. Furthermore, the narrative review did not consider wait-and-see or sham interventions, thus …

Systematic Review Of The Addition Of Hip Strengthening Exercises For Adults With Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Cara Elliott, Fraser Green, Karen Hang, Bronwen Jolliffe, Maureen P. Mcevoy Jan 2018

Systematic Review Of The Addition Of Hip Strengthening Exercises For Adults With Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Cara Elliott, Fraser Green, Karen Hang, Bronwen Jolliffe, Maureen P. Mcevoy

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a common musculoskeletal disorder typically occurring in physically active people aged 40 years and younger, causing pain, functional deficits and lower limb weakness. Traditional treatment has been aimed at strengthening the knee, however recent research suggests the muscles around the hip also play an important role in the development and continuity of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome.

Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of the addition of hip strengthening exercises to standard physiotherapy treatment (knee strengthening and stretching exercises) on reducing pain, and enhancing strength and function when compared to standard physiotherapy treatment alone in adults with Patellofemoral …

Effectiveness Of Hydrotherapy As An Adjunct Treatment For The Management Of Breast Cancer Related Lymphoedema In Women Following Breast Cancer Surgery: A Systematic Review, Eleanor Bills, Matthew Delsar, Steven O'Donnell, Alexandra Rice, Cory Stone, Saravana Kumar

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Cancer is a leading cause of death and disability around the world. Of all cancers, breast cancer commonly ranks amongst the top three. Surgical intervention for breast cancer is common and a possible side effect of this is breast cancer related lymphoedema (BCRL). Women with breast cancer related lymphoedema commonly have regional limb swelling and pain, which can negatively impact mental and social well-being as well as upper limb function. Hydrotherapy is therapeutic modality which may be used as an adjunct to self-management strategies after the intensive phase of lymphoedema management. Yet despite its popularity, recent research has questioned its …
