Atlantoaxial Rotatory Fixation Due To Congenital Strabismus: A Case Report, Chih-Ting Chen, Chia-Ling Lee
Atlantoaxial Rotatory Fixation Due To Congenital Strabismus: A Case Report, Chih-Ting Chen, Chia-Ling Lee
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background Atlantoaxial Rotatory Fixation (AARF) is a relatively rare condition, most diagnosed in the children, with common etiologies including minor trauma and upper respiratory infections. However, cases of AARF resulting from congenital strabismus are yet to be reported. Objective We aimed to underscore the uncommon association between AARF and congenital strabismus and to evaluate the effectiveness of halter traction. Method In this case report, we present an 11-year-old male patient with a history of congenital strabismus, which led to the development of AARF. Results The patient was initially observed to have torticollis and strabismus at the age of 4 months. …
Comparing Findings Of Hemophilia Joint Health Score And Hemophilia Early Arthropathy Detection With Ultrasound Assessments In Taiwanese Patients With Severe Hemophilia, Yen-Ling Huang, Hong-Yi Lin, Te-Fu Weng, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Yueh-Han Ku, Yu-Hui Huang
Comparing Findings Of Hemophilia Joint Health Score And Hemophilia Early Arthropathy Detection With Ultrasound Assessments In Taiwanese Patients With Severe Hemophilia, Yen-Ling Huang, Hong-Yi Lin, Te-Fu Weng, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Yueh-Han Ku, Yu-Hui Huang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between Hemophilia Joint Health Score 2.1 (HJHS 2.1) and Hemophilia Early Arthropathy Detection with Ultrasound (HEAD-US) in Taiwanese patients with severe hemophilia and identify specific items within HJHS to predict early ultrasonic changes in hemophilic arthropathy (HA).
Methods: Thirty-six patients with a total of 210 joints were evaluated. We used Spearman's rank correlation coefficient to analyze the correlation between these two scales. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of each HJHS item were also calculated to predict early HA.
Results:These two scales showed very strong correlation in the total scores …
Deconstruction Of Body Representation Of The Back In Healthy Back Pain-Free Individuals And People With Chronic Low Back Pain, Simon Pratt
Theses
Changes in various body representations have been increasingly investigated and subsequently posited to be potentially important factors in the development and maintenance of chronic low back pain. Three main domains of body representation are considered here: body model, body schema (comprising superficial and postural schema), and body image. Most studies informing our contemporary understanding of these body representations have been undertaken in areas such as the hand and forearm, with a comparative dearth of studies performed on the low back. Consequently, this thesis consists of a comprehensive investigation of body representation initially in healthy back pain-free individuals and then in …
Traumatic Heterotopic Ossification: Pathophysiological Mechanisms, Epidemiological Characteristics, And Risk Factors, Nicola Kate Foster
Traumatic Heterotopic Ossification: Pathophysiological Mechanisms, Epidemiological Characteristics, And Risk Factors, Nicola Kate Foster
Theses
Traumatic heterotopic ossification (tHO) refers to the complication of pathological formation of ectopic bone in soft tissues, which follows tissue insult secondary to burn, neurological and orthopaedic injury [2]. Common to these diagnoses is the involvement of central and or peripheral nervous system trauma. Although known risk factors are associated with developing tHO, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Research to date, primarily in single injury cohorts, has provided minimal translatable results [2]. Thus, clinical guidelines for early screening and prophylactic drug therapy are lacking, and treatment options are limited. To move the body of knowledge …
Biomechanics, Strength, And Physical Function After Surgical Repair Of Rotational Ankle Fractures, Benjamin Brightwell
Biomechanics, Strength, And Physical Function After Surgical Repair Of Rotational Ankle Fractures, Benjamin Brightwell
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Ankle Fractures account for approximately 9% of all lower extremity fractures and incidence continues to rise. Up to 53% of ankle fractures require surgical intervention. Impaired physical function is one of the most reported and observed lasting effects of surgically repaired ankle fractures. Additionally, limited physical capacity and function have been identified as the primary threats to health-related quality of life after surgical repair of ankle fractures. These impairments to physical capacity and functionality can last longer than 5 years after surgery. Since surgery typically successfully restores stability and congruency of the talocrural joint, these poor long-term outcomes are an …
How Hormonal Contraceptives Influence Injury In Female Athletes: A Systematic Review, Ashley V. Malvita
How Hormonal Contraceptives Influence Injury In Female Athletes: A Systematic Review, Ashley V. Malvita
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Research indicates that female athletes have a higher risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Hormone fluctuations throughout the different periods of the menstruation cycle impacts the risk of injuries for women. Contraceptive use, most used in the form of an oral contraceptive pill, directly effects hormones and menstrual cycle related symptoms, with evidence of ameliorating some symptoms. Oral contraceptive use is suggested to influence musculoskeletal injuries in female athletes. However, there is little research and data that explores the direct relationship between oral contraceptive use and the injury rates of female athletes. Within this systematic review, five articles investigating this relationship fulfilled …
Limb Speed Perception Accuracy In Neurodegenerative Disease, Brandmeir Lynn Cheryl
Limb Speed Perception Accuracy In Neurodegenerative Disease, Brandmeir Lynn Cheryl
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Movement is a fundamental human activity, enabling us to engage with our surroundings. Consequently, a well-operating neuromuscular system is essential for maintaining quality of life. Motion is not only integral for the basic function of daily living, but also plays a significant role in enhancing our physical, mental, and emotional health. The importance of this system becomes abundantly clear when it is compromised, such as with neurodegenerative disease.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), followed by Parkinson’s disease (PD) are the two most common neurodegenerative diseases that profoundly affect millions of individuals worldwide (Lamptey et al., 2022). Characterized by distinct but sometimes overlapping …
