Factors Related To Physical Therapy Management In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Patsakon Saisuri

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Background: Most physical therapists in developed countries use evidence-based physical therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Conversely, little is known concerning treatment used by Thai physical therapists (PTs) in such patients. Objective: To study the relationship among characteristics of PTs, patients with knee OA, and type of physical therapy treatments. Methods: This survey applied three sets of questionnaires to collect data. Questionnaire Set-A collected PTs’ information and experience in treating knee OA. Questionnaires Set-B collected patients’ information regarding history of knee OA, pain, disability, and function (using pain scale and the modified Thai version of the Western Ontario and …

Immediate Effect Of Pain Relief By Ultrasound In Individuals With Sub-Acute Ankle Sprain: A Randomized-Controlled Trial, Thongchai Suksri Jan 2020

Immediate Effect Of Pain Relief By Ultrasound In Individuals With Sub-Acute Ankle Sprain: A Randomized-Controlled Trial, Thongchai Suksri

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Background: Ultrasound therapy (US) is commonly used to treat ankle sprain. However, there is a lack of evidence concerning the analgesic effect of US on subacute ankle sprain. Objective: To investigate the immediate effect of US on pain, ankle range of motion (ROM), and plantar pressure in individuals with unilateral subacute ankle sprains. Methods: Fifty-four participants with unilateral subacute ankle sprains (aged 16-55 years) were recruited and randomly allocated into 2 groups: treatment group (n = 27) and control group (n = 27). A single intervention session was applied in both groups. The treatment group was treated with US, whereas …

Structural Remodelling Of The Lumbar Multifidus, Thoracolumbar Fascia And Lateral Abdominal Wall Perimuscular Connective Tissues: A Cross-Sectional And Comparative Ultrasound Study, Christian Larivière, Richard Preuss, Dany H. Gagnon, Hakim Mecheri, Sharon M. Henry Jan 2020

Structural Remodelling Of The Lumbar Multifidus, Thoracolumbar Fascia And Lateral Abdominal Wall Perimuscular Connective Tissues: A Cross-Sectional And Comparative Ultrasound Study, Christian Larivière, Richard Preuss, Dany H. Gagnon, Hakim Mecheri, Sharon M. Henry

Études primaires

Introduction

With low back pain (LBP), remodelling of the lumbar soft tissues involves both trunk muscles and neighbouring passive connective tissues. The aim of the present study was to compare three quantitative measures of these tissues, using ultrasound imaging (USI), among healthy controls and individuals with LBP.

Methods

USI measures from 30 healthy subjects and 34 patients with non-acute LBP were compared between groups and sexes. The measures employed were (1) lumbar multifidus echogenicity (fatty/fibrosis infiltration) at three vertebral levels; (2) posterior layer thickness of the thoracolumbar fascia, and (3) thickness of the perimuscular tissues surrounding the external oblique, internal …

The Effects Of A 6-Week Controlled Whole-Body Vibration Training Program In Reducing Falls Risk Among Healthy Older Adults, Fabricio Saucedo Jr. Jan 2020

The Effects Of A 6-Week Controlled Whole-Body Vibration Training Program In Reducing Falls Risk Among Healthy Older Adults, Fabricio Saucedo Jr.

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Falling is the second leading cause of accidental or injury-related death in the aging population worldwide and a leading cause of serious injury. Whole-body vibration (WBV) training has been implemented as a way to improve functional performance among the elderly and reduce the falls risk. The purposes of this study were: 1) examine to what extent a six-week course of WBV training reduced falls risk and improved fall outcomes in response to slips, and 2) examine whether the benefits of WBV training could be retained at least 2 months after the completion of the entire training session. A total of …

Comparing Moral Reasoning Across Graduate Occupational And Physical Therapy Students And Practitioners, Brenda S. Howard, Cheyenne Kern, Olivia Milliner, Lindsey Newhart, Sarah K. Burke

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Practicing clinicians must use moral reasoning to solve ethical problems and combat moral distress. Development of moral reasoning in occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) students has been significantly under researched. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in moral reasoning between first year and second year OT and PT students and between students and OT and PT practitioners. Investigators utilized a cross-sectional study design with a convenience sample of University of Indianapolis OT and PT students and a combination of convenience and snowball sampling to recruit licensed OT and PT practitioners. One hundred and fifty-four …

The Positive Impact Of Occupational Therapy Involvement In Interprofessional Education, Wendie Leveille, James Brandes, Karene Boos, Amy Vega, Barbra Beck, Barbara Ruggeri, Thomas E. St. George, Jane Hopp

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

It is essential that members of a successful interprofessional healthcare delivery team understand the crucial roles and responsibilities of each profession. Participation in interprofessional education and practice has been suggested to improve understanding of the roles of each discipline on an allied health team, however, often understanding of the occupational therapy scope of practice is confusing to other allied health professionals. This study presents the outcomes of a community-based interprofessional practice experience with occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant students on perceived understanding of each profession’s roles and responsibilities. In addition, this study introduces the Primary Care Training and …

Adherence To A Home Exercise Programme Following A Clinical Programme For Non-Acute Non-Specific Low Back Pain: An Exploratory Study, Judith L'Heureux, Marie-France Coutu, Djamal Berbiche, Christian Larivière

Études primaires

Purpose:Lack of adherence to home exercise programmes is hypothesised to partially explain the modest clinical effects seen in patients with low back pain. This study explored the association between the main biopsychosocial factors and adherence using a theory-driven approach including the fear-avoidance model, the common-sense model and the working alliance concept.

Methods: A repeated measures design was used. During and after an eight-week clinical exercise programme, 48 participants with non-acute and disabling low back pain followed a home exercise programme. Questionnaires assessed home exercise adherence and biopsychosocial factors at baseline, after the eight-week clinical programme and at the six-month follow-up. …
