The Influence Of Carbon Composite And Plastic Ankle Foot Orthoses On Balance And Gait In Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: A Pilot Study, Hana Goubeaux, Carmen Macy, Tabatha Trauner, Kurt Jackson
The Influence Of Carbon Composite And Plastic Ankle Foot Orthoses On Balance And Gait In Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: A Pilot Study, Hana Goubeaux, Carmen Macy, Tabatha Trauner, Kurt Jackson
University of Dayton Doctor of Physical Therapy Annual Research Symposium
Multiple sclerosis (MS) can cause lower extremity weakness which may impair balance and gait. Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are frequently prescribed to reduce the effects of these impairments. Despite numerous recent advances in the design and materials used for AFOs, there is a lack of evidence to guide clinicians in effective AFO prescription. The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of an anterior shell carbon AFO with a traditional plastic AFO on measures of balance and gait performance.

Each year one in every three adults over the age of 65 experience a fall resulting in serious injury and in some instances death. In this population, falling injuries are the leading cause of death and are associated with the greatest number of nonfatal injuries and trauma hospital admissions. Since balance and muscle performance decreases as one ages, it is vitally important to assess these factors as part of a comprehensive strategy to monitor and predict fall risk. Previous data analysis of the Repetitive Step Test (RST) has shown that there is a significant performance difference between non-fallers and recurrent …
Predicting And Preventing Common Volleyball Injuries With Functional Tests, Madison Marshall
Predicting And Preventing Common Volleyball Injuries With Functional Tests, Madison Marshall
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a compilation of screening tests best suited for predicting and preventing volleyball’s most common injuries. Research displays a gap in knowledge pertaining to volleyball-specific injury prevention tests. A literary analysis was completed for information regarding; correct volleyball techniques, incorrect techniques that are commonly observed, common injuries resulting from faulty technique, and tests best designed to prevent these injuries. It was found that knees and ankles were the two joints most often injured. These injuries mainly occurred during the landing phase of the jumping-landing sequence. Therefore, ankle and knee injury rates were higher …
Physical Therapy Review Of Best Practices Based On Psychology, Bethany Painter
Physical Therapy Review Of Best Practices Based On Psychology, Bethany Painter
Honors Projects
Physical therapy is a field that is growing and changing constantly. For so long, it was assumed that physical healing should be the sole focus of physical therapy. While this is an important aspect of the rehabilitation process, there is so much more to it than that. The psychological trauma a person may experience following an injury can be just as challenging, if not more challenging to overcome than the physical repercussions of the injury. For this reason, it is important to take psychological healing into consideration, as well as physical healing when creating best practices for physical therapists. The …

Supplemental Training And Injury Prevention In The Sport Of Ultra-Running, Jessica M. Heidebrink
Senior Honors Theses
By definition, ultra-marathon running is a sport that covers any distance above the 26.2-mile marathon distance in a single race. The mountains of Virginia host many ultra-marathon races that attract endurance runners from all over the nation to participate. Training is an essential component of running an ultra. Although there is not one specific way to train for an ultra, there is research that correlates the success of the top ultra-runners and their training preferences regarding supplemental training and injury prevention. To gain a more complete understanding of how to prepare for a successful ultra-marathon, an online survey was created …

Shared Decision-Making As Experienced By Rehabilitation Students On An International Service-Learning Trip: A Phenomenological Investigation, Mary Zadnik, Suzanne Trotter, Thomas Werner
Occupational Therapy Collection
The value of service-learning has been well documented in medical and allied health education (Abedini, Gruppen, Kolars, & Kumagai, 2012; Ekelman, Dal Bello-Haas, Bazyk, & Bazyk, 2003; Pechak, Gonzalez, Summers, & Capshaw, 2013; Pechak & Thompson, 2009; Ryan-Krause, 2016). Several studies have been conducted looking at cultural experiences and clinical reasoning (Corbett & Fickert, 2009; Sheppard & Landry, 2015; Nouvet, Chan & Schwartz, 2016). What has not been well-examined though is the concept of shared decision-making by those engaged in service-learning. The purpose of this phenomenological investigation (i.e. study) was to identify how occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) …

Motor Subtypes Of Parkinson’S Disease Can Be Identified By Frequency Component Of Postural Stability, Saba Rezvanian, Thurmon Lockhart, Christopher Frames, Rahul Soangra, Abraham Lieberman
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Parkinson’s disease (PD) can be divided into two subtypes based on clinical features—namely tremor dominant (TD) and postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD). This categorization is important at the early stage of PD, since identifying the subtypes can help to predict the clinical progression of the disease. Accordingly, correctly diagnosing subtypes is critical in initiating appropriate early interventions and tracking the progression of the disease. However, as the disease progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to further distinguish those attributes that are relevant to the subtypes. In this study, we investigated whether a method using the standing center of pressure (COP) …

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) or more commonly referred to as “shin splints” is characterized as an overuse or repetitive stress injury that causes vague pain over and around the tibia. Researchers are yet to determine a definitive cause though numerous risk factors have been noted. They are as follows; over training, type of surface, poor footwear, muscular imbalances at the ankle, over tight or weak triceps surae muscles, imbalances at the thoracolumbar complex, other muscular imbalances and BMI above 30. Rehabilitation and treatment interventions often call for a pause in training entirely or at the very least an immediate scaling …
Pes Planus (Flat Feet) In Relation To Knee Pain, Timothy Conley, Joseph Davenport Ii
Pes Planus (Flat Feet) In Relation To Knee Pain, Timothy Conley, Joseph Davenport Ii
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Pes Planus (Flat Foot) disorder has been found to be associated with frequent knee pain and medial tibiofemoral (TF) cartilage damage. The flattening of the foot causes this pain and damage within the knee by forcing the tibia to rotate internally increasing the rotational pressure on the TF joint. We will be discussing a few factors that may contribute to pes planus such as equines foot deformity, tibial torsion, tarsal coalition, ligamentous laxity and congenital vertical talus. Amongst some of these contributions, a reduction in physical activity at a young age can also be a root cause to flat feet …

Acl Conservative Rehab Vs. Surgical Reconstruction, Logan Gailtis, Joshua Stetson
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
If you have ever been around sports you’ve probably heard of the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament. The ACL, responsible for preventing anterior displacement on the tibia, usually tears from non-contact pivoting motions. There are two options for an athlete with a full ACL tear, either to undergo reconstructive surgery of the ligament which will put the athlete out for months or look to conservative rehab by strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee in order to compensate for the integrity lost with the torn ACL. Deciding which route to go is the tricky part. Physicians may start with conservative treatment …
