The athletic shoulder is susceptible to repetitive overuse injuries in sports. No shoulder rehabilitation program is complete without the prescription of exercises to enhance scapular function. An athlete should progress from basic rehabilitation exercises identified by electromyographic studies to dynamic, sport-specific positions before returning to sport.

Overhead athletes are susceptible to shoulder injuries. One component of a complete rehabilitation program is a systematic exercise prescription for the shoulder's external rotators. An overhead athlete should be progressed from basic rehab exercise positions to dynamic, sport-specific positions prior to returning to sport.

Study Design: Two-factor mixed-design study, with factors including group (control and noncoper) and task (sidestep, crossover, and straight).

Objectives: To compare the knee and hip joint angles and moments of control subjects and subjects with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficient knee classified as noncopers, during a sidestep, crossover, and straight-ahead task.

Background: Subjects with ACL deficiency primarily note difficulty with cutting tasks as opposed to straight-ahead tasks. Yet, previous studies have primarily focused on straight-ahead tasks.

Strength and conditioning programs can serve a role in the prevention of injuries. Athletes who are at risk for a serious knee injury may benefit from a plyometric training program. The program that a high school coach develops or implements should be evidence based and address lower-extremity strength and biomechanical techniques.

The overhead throwing motion is used in numerous sports including track, football, and baseball. Among these sports, the baseball pitch is unique in the demands placed upon the shoulder. The forces created in the shoulder can potentially lead to pathology affecting the athlete's career. To enhance performance and decrease the risk of injury, it is important that the athlete participate in a year-round periodized program. Inappropriate or deficient training combined with the stress that the shoulder experiences during a season can lead to strains, impingement, tendon or labral tears, and instabilities.

Although the rabbit hindlimb has been commonly used as an experimental animal model for studies of osteoarthritis, bone growth and fracture healing, the in vivo biomechanics of the rabbit knee joint have not been quantified. The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinematic and kinetic patterns during hopping of the adult rabbit, and to develop a model to estimate the joint contact force distribution between the tibial plateaus. Force platform data and three-dimensional motion analysis using infrared markers mounted on intracortical bone pins were combined to calculate the knee and ankle joint intersegmental forces and moments. Associations Of Knee Angles, Moments And Function Among Subjects That Are Healthy And Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficient (Acld) During Straight Ahead And Crossover Cutting Activities, Jeff Houck, H. John Yack

The objective of this study was to compare knee angles and moments of healthy subjects (n/20) and subjects that were anterior cruciate ligament deficient (ACLD) (n/16) during stepping and crossover cutting activities. Subjects that were ACLD were separated into high (n/7) and low (n/9) functioning groups based on knee functioning ratings. Knee angles and moments were estimated using three dimensional motion tracking and force plate data. The results suggest that knee angle and moment data were associated with level of functioning of ACLD subjects. Primarily knee frontal and transverse plane moments distinguished the stepping and crossover cut activities. Only some …

Objective: To describe the knee kinematics and moments of a giving-way trial of a subject with an anterior-cruciate-ligament– (ACL) deficient knee relative to his non–giving-way trials and to healthy subjects during a step-down task.

Background: Episodes of giving way are believed to damage joint structures, therefore treatments aim to prevent giving-way episodes, yet few studies document giving-way events.

Comparison between successful and failed sit-to-stand trials of a patient after traumatic brain injury.

Objective: To compare the peak whole-body center of mass (COM) velocities and joint angular contributions in successful and unsuccessful sit-to-stand (STS) trials in a subject with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Design: Single-case study.

Setting: Motion research laboratory.

Participant: A 24-year-old man who was 3.5 years post-TBI.

Interventions: Not applicable.

Main Outcome Measures: Peak horizontal and vertical velocities of the whole-body COM and peak angular velocities of the ankle, knee, hip, and shoulder joints.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of lower extremity joint angular motions on the whole body linear motions in a sit-to-stand movement using a biomechanical model that describes the whole body linear velocity vector as functions of lower extremity joint angular velocities.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been used to treat a variety of extremity problems in head-injured patients. Specifically, NMES has been used to gain motor control, reduce joint contractures, and reduce muscle hypertonicity.1 Such uses rely on intact peripheral nerve excitability to generate the desired muscular response. This article will present some clinically relevant methods of maximizing the effectiveness of NMES programs for facilitating limb control in the head-injured patient. Stimulator features that help ensure treatment success will be identified. Serial casting has been used for over a decade to manage soft tissue contractures in patients with traumatic head injuries. Its use has also extended to the prevention of contractures in extremities exhibiting potentially deforming spasticity. This article will review the causes of soft tissue contractures and discuss how serial casting can manage such deformities. It will also identify how a serial casting program can be modified and integrated with other therapeutic efforts as the head-injured patient progresses physically and cognitively. Finally, it will address the timing and priority of casting in the patient's overall program.
