Impact And Perceived Benefits Of A Problem-Based Learning Workshop For Continuing Education In Speech-Language Pathology: A Pilot Study, Megan S. Overby, Heather L. Rusiewicz
Impact And Perceived Benefits Of A Problem-Based Learning Workshop For Continuing Education In Speech-Language Pathology: A Pilot Study, Megan S. Overby, Heather L. Rusiewicz
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Even though speech-language pathologists (SLPs) must participate in continuing education programs, little is known about the effectiveness of these learning opportunities. This preliminary study provides empirical assessment of the impact of a problem-based learning (PBL) CE activity on SLPs as perceived by themselves and their Instructors. Twenty-five experienced SLPs participated in an intensive multi-day, PBL workshop on childhood apraxia of speech. Significant differences in the SLPs’ self-perceived clinical efficacy between T1 and T2, as well as T2 and T3. At T3, Instructors rated the clinical efficacy of the SLPs as “very good” to “excellent.” Qualitatively, SLPs reported increased confidence, critical …
Effects Of Aging On Temporal Predictive Mechanisms Of Speech And Hand Motor Reaction Time, Karim Johari, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roozbeh Behroozmand
Effects Of Aging On Temporal Predictive Mechanisms Of Speech And Hand Motor Reaction Time, Karim Johari, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roozbeh Behroozmand
Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
Evidence from previous studies has suggested that movement execution in younger adults is accelerated in response to temporally predictable vs. unpredictable sensory stimuli. This effect indicates that external temporal information can modulate motor behavior; however, how aging can influence temporal predictive mechanisms in motor system has yet to be understood. The objective of the present study was to investigate aging effects on the initiation and inhibition of speech and hand movement reaction times in response to temporally predictable and unpredictable sensory stimuli. Fifteen younger (mean age 22.6) and fifteen older (mean age 63.8) adults performed a randomized speech vowel vocalization …

Ureteral Tunnel Length Versus Ureteral Orifice Configuration In The Determination Of Ureterovesical Junction Competence: A Computer Simulation Model, Carlos A. Villanueva, J. Tong, Carl A. Nelson, Linxia Gu
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Introduction The long-held belief that a ureteral re-implant tunnel should be five times the diameter of the ureter, as proposed by Paquin in 1959, ignores the effect of the orifice on the occurrence of reflux. In 1969, Lyon proposed that the shape of the ureteral orifice (UO) is more important than the intravesical tunnel. However, both theories missed quantitative evidence from principles of physics. The goal of the current study was to test Lyon’s theory through numerical models (i.e. to quantify the sensitivity of ureterovesical junction (UVJ) competence to intravesical tunnel length and to the UO).
Materials and methods The …

In-Home Delivery Of Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy Via Virtual Reality Gaming, Alexandra L. Borstad, Roger Crawfis, Kala Phillips, Linda Pax Lowes, David Maung, Ryan Mcpherson, Amelia Siles, Lise Worthen-Chaudhari, Lynne V. Gauthier
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: People with chronic hemiparesis are frequently dissatisfied with the recovery of their hand and arm, yet many lack access to effective treatments. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CI therapy) effectively increases arm function and spontaneous use in persons with chronic hemiparesis. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and measure safety and outcomes of an in-home model of delivering CI therapy using a custom, avatar-based virtual reality game.
Methods: Seventeen individuals with chronic hemiparesis participated in this pretest/posttest quasi-experimental design study. The 10-day intervention had three components: 1) high-repetition motor practice using virtual reality gaming; 2) constraint of …
Exercise Therapy For Chronic Low Back Pain, Jeanmarie Dahl
Exercise Therapy For Chronic Low Back Pain, Jeanmarie Dahl
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is currently ranked as the 13th most frequent diagnosis in family practice (DynaMed Plus, 2017). Unfortunately, the severe nature of this pain leads providers to prescribe opiates for these patients. Opiates are effective for short term pain management but they have a significant side effect profile. Other forms of management for CLBP need to be identified and utilized. The purpose of this study was to determine the role exercise therapy plays in the treatment and management of patients with chronic low back pain.
A literature review was conducted in order to find high quality systematic …
Effect Of Low-Intensity Long-Duration Ultrasound On The Symptomatic Relief Of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Double-Blind Study, Dominic Klyve, Ralph Ortiz, Davie O. Draper, Thomas M. Best
Effect Of Low-Intensity Long-Duration Ultrasound On The Symptomatic Relief Of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Double-Blind Study, Dominic Klyve, Ralph Ortiz, Davie O. Draper, Thomas M. Best
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
Background: Wearable long-duration low-intensity ultrasound is an emerging non-invasive and non-narcotic therapy for the daily treatment of musculoskeletal pain. The aim of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to examine whether long-duration low-intensity ultrasound was effective in treating pain and improving function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Ninety patients with moderate to severe knee pain and radiographically confirmed knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade I/II) were randomized for treatment with active (n = 55) or placebo (n = 35) devices applied daily to the treated knee. Investigators and subjects were blinded to treatment groups. Ultrasound (3 MHz, 0.132 W/cm2, 1.3 W) …
The Effects Of A Cognitive Training Program For Cognitively Intact Older Adults, Caroline Kinskey
The Effects Of A Cognitive Training Program For Cognitively Intact Older Adults, Caroline Kinskey
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Cognitive training is a term used to describe programs that provide guided practice on tasks requiring different cognitive abilities such as memory or language. It is assumed that regular practice will improve or maintain functioning in a particular cognitive domain (e.g., memory) and those results will generalize beyond the context of training. Results have been mixed in the existing literature that has evaluated the potential benefits of cognitive training on cognitive and emotional functioning in cognitively intact older adults. This study investigated the effectiveness of a cognitive training program for older adults with no to very minimal cognitive decline. Nine …
How Graduate Experience Changes Beliefs In Working With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Populations: A Survey Study, Stephanie Bove
How Graduate Experience Changes Beliefs In Working With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Populations: A Survey Study, Stephanie Bove
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Speech-language pathologists work in a variety of settings that require savvy transitions between patients from many cultures and backgrounds. Graduate students may get little practice working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations depending upon where they perform their practicum and internships. Researchers at a mid-western university developed a survey to collect student perspectives regarding cultural competence. A single cohort received the survey at three intervals to track a change in responses from the beginning of their first year of graduate school through their clinical fellowship. Students took a Multicultural Issues class between their first and second survey responses. Data collected …
The Effect Of Yoga In Reducing Pain Related To Arthritis: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Meredith Collins, Corinne Reed
The Effect Of Yoga In Reducing Pain Related To Arthritis: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Meredith Collins, Corinne Reed
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Research shows that arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States (Middleton et al., 2013). The PICOT question for this systematic review of literature is “In adults over the age of 40 years, how do yoga interventions, compared to pharmacological pain relief methods alone, affect arthritic pain intensity and frequency?” This systematic review will discuss the possible benefits of using yoga as treatment for both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The methods for this review included a comprehensive search yielding nineteen credible studies using the databases Search-A-Roo, Google Scholar, and CINAHL Plus for full-text academic journal articles …

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is currently ranked as the 13th most frequent diagnosis in family practice (DynaMedPlus, 2017). The severe nature of the pain in this condition often leads providers to prescribe narcotics. While effective in the short term, opiates have significant side effects when used chronically. Other forms of management for CLBP need to be identified and utilized. The purpose of this review was to determine the role exercise therapy plays in the management of CLBP.
Four databases were searched in order to find high quality systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials (RCT) looking at exercise therapy …
