The human hand is a powerful tool essential for performing a range of tasks from simple to complex, and it plays a crucial role in social interactions and environmental engagement. Upper limb (UL) loss disrupts these functions and significantly impacts daily life. Prosthetic devices can partially restore these abilities and improve quality of life, but they lack the intuitive control and sensory feedback of natural hands. Consequently, operating a UL prosthesis requires substantial attentional demands, a factor that potentially contributes to high rates of device dissatisfaction and disuse. Individuals with transfemoral amputation often rely on a prosthesis as a replacement for their missing extremity’s structure and function. Lower-limb prosthetic devices are developed with the goal of restoring biomechanical abilities and mitigating secondary health risks for users. However, biomechanical deficits for unilateral transfemoral prosthesis users are very common and are induced by both leg length discrepancy (LLD) and current prosthetic design shortcomings. The purpose of this capstone project is to build a collapsible prosthetic shower leg that can provide a transtibial amputee with reliable support while showering. Phil Tamoush, an 83-year old transtibial amputee, was the inspiration for this work. Phil’s constant travel for his arbitration work leaves him without the option to bring along his usual shower leg due to the additional space it takes up in his travel bag. Introduction: The alignment of a prosthesis is clinically determined based on observations by clinicians and the subjective perception of amputees during gait. However, this process has been reported to be unreliable. Socket reaction moment has been reported to be significantly impacted by alignment changes, but the impact of these alignment changes on other gait parameters is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of coronal alignment changes of a transtibial prosthesis on socket reaction moment, spatiotemporal parameters, and perceptions of alignment during gait in amputees.

Introduction

Skillful object manipulation in various activities of daily living requires accurate and economical modulation of grip force, yet experimental studies investigating grip force using a prosthesis are lacking. The purpose of this study was to compare grip force output between two types of upper-limb prosthetic prehensors. We hypothesized a relationship between grip force output and the muscular tension needed to control the prehensor.

Materials and Methods

The technology and design of lower limb prosthetics have evolved greatly since their introduction. The current study proposed to compare the effects of a conventional pin socket attachment and a vacuum socket attachment for a transtibial amputee. Whereas traditional measurements of gait utilize force plates and camera systems, this study made use of a small tri-axial load cell located at the base of the socket to measure the forces and moments exerted during a regular gait cycle.
