Additive Manufacturing (AM) is disrupting fabrication techniques, bringing new design possibilities with associated benefits of less waste, improved design, improved time management, and less cost. The field of Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) is investigating how 3D printing, a subset of AM, can be used for fabrication of O&P devices. Before this technology is fully accepted, it needs to go through rigorous testing to ensure the safety of the individuals using the devices and the longevity of the devices themselves to ensure long term-use as a viable option. The goal of this senior design projet is to develop a cutsom 3D printed orthotic shoe insert. Pressure mapping, laser scanning, and 3D modeling will be used to create a truly custom orthotic for each foot. Pressure mapping will give the weight distribution on an individual's food and the laser scanner will give the x-y coordinates of the foot. these two together will be used to generate a a 3D model which will then be 3D printed to create a custom orthotic. Background: Disruptive technology describes technology that is significantly more advanced than previous iterations, such as: 3D printing, genetic manipulation, stem cell research, innovative surgical procedures, and computer-based charting software. These technologies often require extensive overhauls to implement into older systems and must overcome many difficult financial and societal complications before they can be widely used. In a field like healthcare that makes frequent advancements, these difficulties can mean that the technology will not be utilized to its full potential or implemented at all.
Objective: To determine the inhibiting factors that prevent disruptive technology from being implemented in conventional healthcare.
